Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Muslim Reality in India is a collection of articles dealing with several aspects of Muslim presence in post-independence India. This edited volume highlights not only the problems the Muslim community is confronted with, but also shows the way ahead. The most obvious and visible reality in India is its pluralistic and composite culture. Every multicultural society is a unique experience; it creates and solves problems. The book in your hand has discussed it very well. Indian Muslims feel marginalized politically, economically and socially. Their educational status is pathetic, to say the least. But what has been frightening the Muslims the most is the frequent outbreak of communal violence. There is also the lurking danger of uniform civil code which has the potential to violently polarize the country along communal lines. Similarly wide- spread discrimination, and in some cases social exclusion are also important problems. There are internal as well as external reasons behind the problems mentioned above. The Muslim Reality in India is an attempt to analyse the problems objectively and find out viable solutions to them. Like the causes of the problems, the solutions, too, are both internal and external. The Muslim Reality in India is thus an objective analysis as well as approach to solve the problems of the largest minority in the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oman is the inheritor of a unique political tradition, the imama (imamate), and has a special place in the Arab Islamic world. From the eighth century and for more than a thousand years, the story of Oman was essentially a story of an original, minority, movement: the Ibadi. This long period was marked by the search for a just imama through the Ibadi model of the Islamic State. Hussein Ghubash’s well-researched book takes the reader on an historical voyage through geography, politics, and culture of the region, from the sixteenth century to the present day. Oman has long-standing ties with East Africa as well as Europe; the first contact between Oman and European imperialist powers took place at the dawn of the 1500s with the arrival of the Portuguese, eventually followed by the Dutch, French and British. Persuasive, thorough and drawing on Western as well as Islamic political theory, this book analyzes the different historical and geopolitical roles of this strategic country. Thanks to its millennial tradition, Oman enjoys a solid national culture and a stable socio-political situation. Today, it is moving steadily towards a democratic future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 20th century Cairo was a vibrant and booming global metropolis. The integration of Egypt into the global market had led to rapid urban growth and increased migration. As occupational prospects for women outside the family were limited, sex work became a prominent feature of the new modern city. However, the economic and social changes in Egypt ignited national anxieties about racial degeneration, social disorder and imperial decadence. Francesca Biancani argues here that this was a period of national crisis that became inscribed on the bodies on female sex workers. Based on a wide range of rare primary sources, including documents from court cases, reformist papers, police minutes and letters, Biancani examines the discourses around sex workers and shows how prostitution was understood in colonial Egypt. The book argues that from initially regulating and managing prostitution, local and colonial elites began to depict sex workers as a threat to the physical and moral welfare of the rising Egyptian nation. However, far from being a marginal activity, prostitution is shown to play a central role in the history of Egyptian nation-making. By exploring the interdependence of power and marginality, respectability and transgression, Biancani writes sex work and its practitioners back into the history of modern Egypt. The book is an original contribution to the global history of prostitution and a vital resource for scholars of Middle East Studies.
