Book Synopsis Bioremediation of Petroleum and Petroleum Products by : James G. Speight
Download or read book Bioremediation of Petroleum and Petroleum Products written by James G. Speight and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-11-07 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With petroleum-related spills, explosions, and health issues in the headlines almost every day, the issue of remediation of petroleum and petroleum products is taking on increasing importance, for the survival of our environment, our planet, and our future. This book is the first of its kind to explore this difficult issue from an engineering and scientific point of view and offer solutions and reasonable courses of action. This book will guide the reader through the various methods that are used for the bioremediation of petroleum and petroleum products. The text is easy to read and includes many up-to-date and topical references. This book introduces the reader to the science and technology of biodegradation—a key process in the bioremediation of petroleum and petroleum-based contaminants at spill sites. The contaminants of concern in the molecularly variable petroleum and petroleum products can be degraded under appropriate conditions. But the success of the process depends on the ability to determine the necessary conditions and establish them in the contaminated environment. Although the prime focus of the book is to determine the mechanism, extent, and efficiency of biodegradation, it is necessary to know the composition of the original petroleum or petroleum product. The laws of science dictate what can or cannot be done with petroleum and petroleum products to ensure that biodegradation (hence, bioremediation) processes are effective. The science of the composition of petroleum and petroleum products is at the core of understanding the chemistry of biodegradation and bioremediation processes. Hence, inclusion of petroleum analyses and properties along with petroleum product analyses and properties is a necessary part of this text. Bioremediation of Petroleum and Petroleum Products: Summarizes the pros and cons of remediation of petroleum and petroleum-based products, from an environmental perspective Gives examples of unethical behavior and how they should be corrected Offers arguments and elucidates engineering considerations on all sides of these difficult environmental and economic issues

Book Synopsis Contaminated Sediments in Freshwater Systems by : Frank R. Spellman
Download or read book Contaminated Sediments in Freshwater Systems written by Frank R. Spellman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessment of freshwater sediments can determine whether chemical concentrations are sufficient to cause adverse effects on aquatic organisms or organisms higher in the food chain, including humans. This book presents methods for assessing sediments and includes an integration of physical, chemical, and biological information. It examines the elements of quality assurance and control programs, considerations for the conduct of field surveys, screening-level analyses, chemical analyses, toxicity tests for assessing biological impacts, assessments of benthic invertebrate community structure, surveys of fish tumors and abnormalities, and data presentation and interpretation techniques.
Book Synopsis Environmental Analysis and Technology for the Refining Industry by : James G. Speight
Download or read book Environmental Analysis and Technology for the Refining Industry written by James G. Speight and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-09-02 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely, hands-on guide to environmental issues and regulatorystandards for the petroleum industry Environmental analysis and testing methods are an integral part ofany current and future refining activities. Today's petroleumrefining industry must be prepared to meet a growing number ofchallenges, both environmental and regulatory. Environmental Analysis and Technology for the Refining Industryfocuses on the analytical issues inherent in any environmentalmonitoring or cleanup program as they apply to today's petroleumindustry, not only during the refining process, but also duringrecovery operations, transport, storage, and utilization. Designedto help today's industry professionals identify test methods formonitoring and cleanup of petroleum-based pollutants, the bookprovides examples of the application of environmental regulationsto petroleum refining and petroleum products, as well as currentand proposed methods for the mitigation of environmental effectsand waste management. Part I introduces petroleum technology, refining, and products, andreviews the nomenclature used by refiners, environmentalscientists, and engineers. Part II discusses environmentaltechnology and analysis, and provides information on environmentalregulation and the impact of refining. Coverage includes: * In-depth descriptions of analyses related to gaseous emissions, liquid effluents, and solid waste * A checklist of relevant environmental regulations * Numerous real-world examples of the application of environmentalregulations to petroleum refining and petroleum products * An analysis of current and proposed methods of environmentalprotection and waste management

Book Synopsis Environmental Aspects of Dredging by : R. N. Bray
Download or read book Environmental Aspects of Dredging written by R. N. Bray and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-03-10 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding a port, deepening a navigation channel or creating new land for development, introduces changes to our physical, social, economic and political environment. Changes may result from events during the construction process, or relate to the nature of the completed structure. Changes can be positive or negative, short-term or long-term, and may affect the immediate vicinity of the project or a larger geographical area. Predicting and assessing all possible effects of a planned dredging activity in a scientifically-sound and reliable manner is essential, so that appropriate control measures can be taken to avoid or mitigate unwelcome impacts. This book provides guidance for a complete holistic environmental evaluation procedure and for the design and implementation of environmental control measures. The book is of particular interest to engineers, government agencies and port authorities, as well as civil engineering consultants and contractors involved in planning and designing dredging, maritime infrastructure and fluvial projects.
