Curtii Rufi De Gestis Alexandri Magni, Regis Macedonum, Libri Qui Supersunt VIII New star to give light again to the darkened universe, when the discordant members of the whole were in restless commotion without a leader. He extinguished the firebrand of civil war; he sheathed the swords, and dispersed the storm by sudden light.' The author closes this eulogy on the princeps with the hope that if envy can but be kept away, the descendants of the same house will last for ever, or at least for a very long period. We believe that this pfinccps, to whom the Roman Em pire was indebted for a much happier fate than the Macedonian Empire experienced, was no other than Augustus, who put an end to the disturbances and civil wars which arose in consequence of the sudden death of Caesar; and who, through the unity of his government, gave new strength and prosperity to the Empire. We of course understand the passage figuratively, when the author speaks of the night which enveloped the universe, and the rising of a new star; but we believe he was led to make use of this figurative expression by the extraordinary phenomenon, that during the whole of the year in which Cmsar was murdered, the sun appeared to have lost his splendour, and a dreary mist hung over the country - a phenomenon which is attested by con temporary authors. We are especially induced to entertain the opinion, that Augustus must be understood by the simple expres sion, that the Roman people owed that happiness to their pfinceps, ' because this designation was new in the case of Augus tus, and was made use of by him with especial predilection, whereas it became necessary to employ much stronger expres sions of veneration with the subsequent emperors. Moreover, the simple appellation free from all flattery, the descendants of the same house, ' alludes to a succession consisting of several younger members of the family, as Augustus actually possessed, particularly in his two eldest grandchildren, Gains and Lucius Caesar. We therefore come to the conclusion that Curtius wrote his history of Alexander some years before the Christian era, but at the latest in the year of the birth of our Saviour for the two above-named adopted sons of the princeps died in the years 2 and 4 after Christ, whereupon the stepson of Augustus, Tiberius Claudius Nero, was appointed his successor: the latter was then in the mature age of manhood, and if he had been mentioned, he would have been indicated in a more significant manner. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a comprehensive study of all the known manuscripts and incunables of two works: the history of Alexander the Great written by Quintus Curtius Rufus, probably in the first century AD, and the translation into Latin by Lucius Septimius of the spoof history of the Trojan War, allegedly written at the time of that war by a certain Dictys Cretensis. Drawing on in excess of 200 witnesses, the analysis reveals how the text of Curtius in all our extant manuscripts descends from one damaged copy that survived from the Roman Empire into the Middle Ages, and how the text of Dictys survived in two such copies. It demonstrates that clear and decisive results can be achieved by application of the so-called stemmatic method, and how the application of those results will lead to several improvements to our standard text of Dictys. As well as determining which manuscripts future editors should use in editing these texts and examining them in detail, it also offers equally full discussion of those which will not be needed, establishing many localizations and derivations. The result is a large body of material that will help deepen our knowledge of the transmission of classical Latin texts, especially in the Renaissance, as well as our knowledge of scribal practice and of techniques that can be deployed in the genealogical study of manuscripts and incunables.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a translation, with commentary, of a major Roman source on the end of the reign of Alexander the Great. Book 10 of Curtius' Histories covers the reign of terror and mutiny that followed upon Alexander's return from India; and offers the fullest account of the power struggle that began in Babylon immediately after his death. The Introduction establishes a profile of Curtius Rufus (quite probably a Roman Senator of the first century AD), and his agenda as a historian. John Yardley's translation and the commentary are designed for the reader without Latin. The Commentary provides detailed analysis of the historical events of the crucial period 325-3 BC covered by Curtius, and also tries to get behind the surface level of meaning to show how Curtius intended his history to be a text for his time. Curtius' text is also examined as a literary achievement in its own right.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a revised and improved edition of the auction catalogue of Kierkegaard’s private library. The catalogue has long served as one of the most valuable tools in Kierkegaard studies and has been actively used by commentators, translators and researchers for tracing the various sources of Kierkegaard’s thought. With the catalogue in hand, one can determine with some degree of probability what books he read and what editions he used for his information about specific authors. The present volume represents the fourth printing of the catalogue, and it differs from its predecessors in many respects. The previous editions contained incomplete, erroneous and inconsistent bibliographical information about the works in the catalogue. The primary goal of the present edition was to obtain all of the books and check their title pages for the precise bibliographical information. The result is an accurate and reliable edition of the catalogue that conforms to the needs of Kierkegaard studies in the digital age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. ****** The contributions in this volume explore the role of emotions in connection with the structures of authority and order that can be found in ancient and medieval texts. Since antiquity, emotions have often been viewed as destructive. Instead, this collection of papers takes a fresh look at the constructive and stabilizing aspects of emotions. By including the perspectives of philology, philosophy, papyrology, ancient history and Roman law it offers a plethora of interpretative approaches that encourage further research in the field. A focal point of this volume are the emotions of fear and anger.
