Download or read book Pylon written by William Faulkner and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the few of William Faulkner’s works to be set outside his fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Pylon, first published in 1935, takes place at an air show in a thinly disguised New Orleans named New Valois. An unnamed reporter for a local newspaper tries to understand a very modern ménage a trois of flyers on the brainstorming circuit. These characters, Faulkner said, “were a fantastic and bizarre phenomenon on the face of the contemporary scene. . . . That is, there was really no place for them in the culture, in the economy, yet they were there, at that time, and everyone knew that they wouldn’t last very long, which they didn’t. . . . That they were outside the range of God, not only of respectability, of love, but of God too.” In Pylon Faulkner set out to test their rootless modernity to see if there is any place in it for the old values of the human heart that are the central concerns of his best fiction. Book Synopsis Ptolemaic Philae by : Eleni Vassilika
Download or read book Ptolemaic Philae written by Eleni Vassilika and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1989 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Ptolemaic temples of the island of Philae, in Upper Egypt. The temples were modified and extended during the course of the Ptolemaic dynasty and this detailed study presents the first full publication of the architectural development and relief decoration of this site. Separate chapters address the principles of decoration, the architectural development of the site, the attributes of the Pharaoh and deities, the evolution of the human figure in the reliefs and, finally, artisan work methods. A computer facilitated the recording of the 29 variables associated with each of the 824 offering scenes. This approach, adaptable to other sites, allowed the handling of an otherwise unmanageable amount of information. The computer database is printed in full, with tabulated information gathered from it. The 1274 drawings illustrate all the offerings, crowns, clothing and other attributes depicted in the relief decoration at Philae. The plates illustrate the architectural details, the work methods of the artisans and the changing rendering of the human figure during the course of the Ptolemaic dynasty.

Book Synopsis Cable Supported Composite Bridges by : Changyu Shao
Download or read book Cable Supported Composite Bridges written by Changyu Shao and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the latest developments in long-span cable-supported composite cable-stayed bridges, suspension bridges, and mid- and through-type cable-supported composite arch bridges. Based on the engineering application and practice of cable-supported composite bridges, this book systematically expounds the structural systems of these bridge types. It also summarizes the main construction methods, analyzes the mechanical properties of cable-stayed bridges and suspension bridges with composite girders and the influence rule with alternative spans, and proposes the reasonable span range based on economic efficiency. The prospect of using orthotropic composite bridge decks in long-span cable-supported bridges is also analyzed. This book is a valuable reference for both bridge professional technicians and graduate students for research, design and construction.

Book Synopsis Cable Supported Bridges by : Niels J. Gimsing
Download or read book Cable Supported Bridges written by Niels J. Gimsing and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-12-30 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourteen years on from its last edition, Cable Supported Bridges: Concept and Design, Third Edition, has been significantly updated with new material and brand new imagery throughout. Since the appearance of the second edition, the focus on the dynamic response of cable supported bridges has increased, and this development is recognised with two new chapters, covering bridge aerodynamics and other dynamic topics such as pedestrian-induced vibrations and bridge monitoring. This book concentrates on the synthesis of cable supported bridges, suspension as well as cable stayed, covering both design and construction aspects. The emphasis is on the conceptual design phase where the main features of the bridge will be determined. Based on comparative analyses with relatively simple mathematical expressions, the different structural forms are quantified and preliminary optimization demonstrated. This provides a first estimate on dimensions of the main load carrying elements to give in an initial input for mathematical computer models used in the detailed design phase. Key features: Describes evolution and trends within the design and construction of cable supported bridges Describes the response of structures to dynamic actions that have attracted growing attention in recent years Highlights features of the different structural components and their interaction in the entire structural system Presents simple mathematical expressions to give a first estimate on dimensions of the load carrying elements to be used in an initial computer input This comprehensive coverage of the design and construction of cable supported bridges provides an invaluable, tried and tested resource for academics and engineers.
