Initially appearing in a now rare 1986 edition and here re-issued for the first time, the doctoral thesis on which the book is based became the catalyst for much scholarly research. The book offers an analysis of the entire corpus of /Xam narratives found in the Bleek and Lloyd collection, focusing particularly on the cycle of narratives concerning the trickster /Kaggen (Mantis). These are examined on three levels from the 'deep structures' with resonances in other areas of /Xam culture and supernatural belief, through the recurring patterns of narrative composition apparent across the cycle and finally touching on the observable differences in the performances by the various /Xam collaborators. Hewitt's text remains the only comprehensive and detailed study of /Xam narrative, and it has become itself the object of study by researchers and PhD candidates in South Africa, the United Kingdom, Canada and elsewhere. Book excerpt: Published by the South African colonial administration in the late 1920s, the purpose of this book was to present to the League of Nations a short sketch of each of the principal "tribes" in Namibia. Three of the chapters were written by Heinrich Vedder ("The Herero", "The Namas", "The Berg Damara"), while the chapters on "The Owambos" and "The Bushmen" were written by C.H.L. Hahn and L. Fourie, two South African colonial officials. The articles are mainly concerned with "anthropological zoo-ism",and are quite interesting as a distillation of the prejudices of colonial officials and as a reflection of the knowledge they thought they had on the historical/ethnological background of the peoples in the territory. The interest of the authors lie in magico-religious beliefs and "superstition", physical characteristics, puberty and initiation rites, laws and customs, the holy fire, and marriage and courtship, while there is less information on social conditions, material culture, production and trade.The contributions by Vedder contain some sections on history, based on premises such as that "the history of the Berg Damaras commences with the history of missionary activities amongst them". There are several photos and a brief bibliography at the end of each chapter. (Eriksen/Moorsom 1989).

However, little is known or written about one of the poorest and most vulnerable communities in the region, the Batwa Pygmies. Pygmies live in a considerable number of Central African countries. They are believed to be the original inhabitants of the equatorial forests of Central Africa. But the Batwa have been displaced and marginalized, first by incoming agriculturalists and pastoralists in the nineteenth century, subsequently, during the colonial period, by the advent of large-scale logging, and most recently by the establishment of game parks. The severe inter and intra-state conflicts of the past decade have undermined their livelihoods and culture even further. The Report focuses on the Batwa living in Burundi, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. It provides an historical account of the Batwa of the region and shows how they have sought to accommodate themselves to changing circumstances, describing their contemporary ways of life as potters and labourers, and their talents as performing artists. Most urgently, it examines the multiple ways in which their rights are violated and documents the ways in which Batwa are now mobilizing to defend and promote their rights. Please note that the terminology in the fields of minority rights and indigenous peoples’ rights has changed over time. MRG strives to reflect these changes as well as respect the right to self-identification on the part of minorities and indigenous peoples. At the same time, after over 50 years’ work, we know that our archive is of considerable interest to activists and researchers. Therefore, we make available as much of our back catalogue as possible, while being aware that the language used may not reflect current thinking on these issues.
