He is tethered to his affections, unable to rule without them. He will not admit this weakness. He tells himself to stay strong and rule in the tradition of his ancestors. Being obedient to the purple has allowed the Eneija Kingdom to remain dominant and beautiful. The purple is a gift given for obedience, but the people are drawing away. The kingdom has grown large and profitable through blood, sweat, and the purple tears. Now, the king’s compassion might be its downfall. His life suddenly overflows with secrets pleasures and punishments. In this world of intrigue, giving in to love could prove to be not only heart breaking but dangerous.

Book excerpt: Taking in works from writers as diverse as William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, Charlotte Brontë, John Keats, James Joyce and D.H. Lawrence, this book spans approximately 300 years and unpacks how bodily liquidity, porosity and petrification recur as a pattern and underlie the chequered history of the body and genders in literature. Lennartz examines the precarious relationship between porosity and its opposite – closure, containment and stoniness – and explores literary history as a meandering narrative in which 'female' porosity and 'manly' stoniness clash, showing how different societies and epochs respond to and engage with bodily porosity. This book considers the ways that this relationship is constantly renegotiated and where effusive and 'feminine' genres, such as 'sloppy' letters and streams of consciousness, are pitted against stony and astringent forms of masculinity, like epitaphs, sonnets and the Bildungsroman.

Braunmuller who understand that these are plays for performance as well as great texts for contemplation." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statues coming to life and lively portraits ready to breathe in Shakespeare? This new volume re-assesses the key role played by visual culture in his drama and poetry by providing readers with an up-to-date guide to the main publications on the subject as well as offering a synthesis on the main literary and historical sources for inspiration. While scrutinising the complex issue of image on an Elizabethan stage and exploring the codification of colours in Shakespeare's poetry, this dictionary highlights the fierce rivalry between the poet, the dramatist and the visual artist. This volume will be of great interest and value to students of Shakespeare, students of art history or anyone working on the interdisciplinary subject of literature and art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Red Daughters in a Foreign Spotlight (Published November 22, 2008), is Marleen Rita Duckhorn's first published book. It is a collection of poems in which she delivers a plethora of worldly and lighthearted topics, with just enough humor to be wistful yet amusing with the turn of every page. BOOK REVIEWS One thing to be said about Duckhorn's poetry; readers get value for their money. Duckhorn clearly owes much to Emily Dickinson, another woman known for filling books to the brim with brief pieces. Sometimes, the poet has a fantastic ear for pregnant-though mundane-symbols, as illustrated in "The Net Weight of the Chess Set." She often seems to have a real knack for phrasing, as with the quick sketch "Who Can Master?": "Who can chortle in the midst of turmoil / Whose open heart be so driven / Bend down and kiss the good earth / And stay happy when shelter's not given?" --Kirkus Discoveries

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A folk-taxonomy is a semantic field that represents the particular way in which a language imposes structure and order upon the myriad impressions of human experience and perception. Thus, for example, the experience of color in modem English is structured around an inventory of twelve "basic" color terms; but languages vary in the number of basic color terms used, from thirteen or fourteen terms to as few as two or three. Anthropological linguists have been interested in the comparative study of folk-taxonomies across contemporary languages, and in their studies they have sometimes proposed evolutionary models for the development and elaboration of these taxonomies. The evolutionary models have implications for historical linguistics, but there have been very few studies of the historical development of a folk-taxonomy within a language or within a language family. Folk-Taxonomies in Early English undertakes this task for English, and to some extent for the Germanic and Indo-European language families. The semantic fields studied are basic color terms, seasons of the year, geometric shapes, the five senses, the folk-psychology of mind and soul, and basic plant and animal life-forms. Anderson's emphasis is on folk-taxonomies in Old and Middle English, and also on the implications of semantic analysis for our reading of early English literary texts.

This book was released on 2002-02-14 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare's Sonnets are among the most complex and beautiful poems ever written. Their exploration of love, praise, homo- and hetero-sexual desire is enacted in the richest, densest writing in English. And the first printed work to which Shakespeare's name was attached was the erotic narrative poem, Venus and Adonis, which developed a sumptuous vocabulary in which to explore love, praise of the beloved, sexual desire, and the power of rhetoric. That poem was so popular that most of Shakespeare's contemporaries thought of him as primarily a poet, rather than a playwright. Yet despite the power of Shakespeare's poems, and their foundational place within his oeuvre, modern readers have seldom been encouraged to engage with his non-dramatic works as a whole. This new edition explains how this state of affairs has arisen, and why it needs to be changed. The volume contains the complete Sonnets and poems with a full commentary. An extensive and lively introduction explores Shakespeare's poetic development, and shows how the poems relate to each other and to his dramatic works. The Sonnets are freshly interpreted, not as cryptic fragments of autobiography, but as works which ask their readers to think about relationships between lyric poems and the historical circumstances which may have given rise to them. The narrative poems Venus and Adonis and Lucrece are placed where they belong, at the origin of Shakespeare's thinking about what it means to desire and to be desired. The edition responds to the most recent scholarly work on the interpretation and dating of Shakespeare's poems and Sonnets. It also explores what the poems may have meant to their earliest readers. For this reason it also includes poems attributed to Shakespeare in the seventeenth century, as well as those printed under his name in The Passionate Pilgrim in 1599.

This book of poems portrays personal and universal social problems and issues such as growing up, domestic violence, abuse, injustice, money, prostitution, slavery, judgments, opinions, fears, worries, and doubts; all attributed to self-hate and misunderstanding of oneself and one another. This dark but artistic coming-of-age story of poems provides you with a pragmatic, scientific, philosophical, and real-life approach towards life. It portrays how to overcome universal problems and abuse and be empowered to succeed in your life. The ultimate purpose is to cross the boundaries of problems with miscommunication and misunderstanding amongst children, adults, parents, and elderly within various nationalities, cultures, ages, societies, and standardized organizations. My hope is for greater understanding, communication, and compassion for one another.

He likes to be left alone. He likes his job. And he definitely likes being on his home planet. But Matt Cotter can’t control everything he likes. For instance, maybe a being from another planet (an intelligent one at that (intelligent being not an intelligent planet)) visits Matt at work and invites him to a planet called Drabble. And maybe, just maybe, that being wants Matt Cotter to help him solve a crime that hasn’t happened yet. Why would this being want that? Because Matt Cotter is so good at solving traffic problems by seeing patterns, he must be able to do the same with pre-crime. Can Matt Cotter solve the case? There’s one way to know if he does. Think about it … almost there. Yes! … That’s how to find out! Inspired by such classics as Doctor Who and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Desmond Shepherd delivers a story mixed with science fiction, mystery, and a little—make that a lot—of humor that solidifies him as one of the most mysterious, humorous, and science fictionous writers around.

Book excerpt: In this vivid and captivating journey through the colors of an artist’s palette, Victoria Finlay takes us on an enthralling adventure around the world and through the ages, illuminating how the colors we choose to value have determined the history of culture itself. How did the most precious color blue travel all the way from remote lapis mines in Afghanistan to Michelangelo’s brush? What is the connection between brown paint and ancient Egyptian mummies? Why did Robin Hood wear Lincoln green? In Color, Finlay explores the physical materials that color our world, such as precious minerals and insect blood, as well as the social and political meanings that color has carried through time. Roman emperors used to wear togas dyed with a purple color that was made from an odorous Lebanese shellfish–which probably meant their scent preceded them. In the eighteenth century, black dye was called logwood and grew along the Spanish Main. Some of the first indigo plantations were started in America, amazingly enough, by a seventeen-year-old girl named Eliza. And the popular van Gogh painting White Roses at Washington’s National Gallery had to be renamed after a researcher discovered that the flowers were originally done in a pink paint that had faded nearly a century ago. Color is full of extraordinary people, events, and anecdotes–painted all the more dazzling by Finlay’s engaging style. Embark upon a thrilling adventure with this intrepid journalist as she travels on a donkey along ancient silk trade routes; with the Phoenicians sailing the Mediterranean in search of a special purple shell that garners wealth, sustenance, and prestige; with modern Chilean farmers breeding and bleeding insects for their viscous red blood. The colors that craft our world have never looked so bright.
