Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purity and Danger is acknowledged as a modern masterpiece of anthropology. It is widely cited in non-anthropological works and gave rise to a body of application, rebuttal and development within anthropology. In 1995 the book was included among the Times Literary Supplement's hundred most influential non-fiction works since WWII. Incorporating the philosophy of religion and science and a generally holistic approach to classification, Douglas demonstrates the relevance of anthropological enquiries to an audience outside her immediate academic circle. She offers an approach to understanding rules of purity by examining what is considered unclean in various cultures. She sheds light on the symbolism of what is considered clean and dirty in relation to order in secular and religious, modern and primitive life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Ancient Greek religion really 'mere ritualism'? Early Christians denounced the pagans for the disorderly plurality of their cults, and reduced Greek religion to ritual and idolatry; protestant theologians condemned the pagan 'religion of form' (with Catholicism as its historical heir). For a long time, scholars tended to conceptualize Greek religion as one in which belief did not matter, and religiosity had to do with observance of rituals and religious practices, rather than with worshipers' inner investment. But what does it mean when Greek texts time and again speak of purity of mind, soul, and thoughts? This book takes a radical new look at the Ancient Greek notions of purity and pollution. Its main concern is the inner state of the individual worshipper as they approach the gods and interact with the divine realm in a ritual context. It is a book about Greek worshippers' inner attitudes towards the gods and rituals, and about what kind of inner attitude the Greek gods were envisaged to expect from their worshippers. In the wider sense, it is a book about the role of belief in ancient Greek religion. By exploring the Greek notions of inner purity and pollution from Hesiod to Plato, the significance of intrinsic, faith-based elements in Greek religious practices is revealed - thus providing the first history of the concepts of inner purity and pollution in early Greek religion.

Book excerpt: Like medical knowledge and practice itself, most medical histories are fascinated with the bodies of patients. Bashford examines practitioners of medicine, as well as patients, as embodied and sexed subjects. She brings together recent cultural and feminist theories on the body, nineteenth-century medical history and the history of gender and Victorian feminism. Purity and Pollution is a cultural history which investigates the ways in which many different practitioners - male and female doctors, nurses, midwives, accoucheurs - were implicated in a discourse and a material practice inescapably about the pure and the polluted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn about the anthropological basis for many of the traditional and cultural Congolese practices related to religion and the way in which these practices are thought to impact one's life, both then and now. Our Congolese ancestors believed that the best way to respect religious conventions was to avoid pollution - or sin and uncleanliness - in society because it represented an evil spirit that impacted both the soul and the body. A work of nonfiction, Pollution: Concepts of Taboo in the Analysis of Danger & Purity details many aspects of Congolese culture as it pertains to pollution, particularly those related to anthropological taboos associated with sexual health and reproduction. Having been born and raised among these beliefs, Audrey C P Moungolo Iboumbi brings a first-person perspective that allows the reader to better understand what may be foreign or unfamiliar concepts through personal stories and details. About the Author Born in the République of Congo, Audrey C P Moungolo Iboumbi eventually studied journalism in Benin in West Africa, where she worked as a reporter for several years. In 2009, she earned her Bachelor's degree and professional license to become a journalist. Five years later, Moungolo Iboumbi became a United States citizen, and in 2016, she earned her Associate's degree from Harry Truman College. Recently, she earned her second Bachelor's degree in Film and Digital Media Production from Loyola University Chicago and is now pursuing her Master's program in Film at the California College of the Arts. Moungolo Iboumbi's hobbies include reading, writing, and watching movies. Pollution: Concepts of Taboo in the Analysis of Danger & Purity is her first book.

Book excerpt: Mary Douglas’s seminal work Purity and Danger (Routledge, 1966) continues to be indispensable reading for both students and scholars today. Marking the 50th anniversary of Douglas’s classic, the present volume sheds fresh light upon themes raised by Douglas by drawing on recent developments in the social sciences and humanities, as well as current empirical research. In presenting new perspectives on the topic of purity and impurity, the volume integrates work in anthropology and sociology with contemporary ideas from religious studies, cognitive science and the arts. Containing contributions from both established and emerging scholars, including protégées of Douglas herself, Purity and Danger Now is an essential volume for those working on purity and impurity across the full spectrum of the social sciences and humanities.
