Book excerpt: All my existence, I have loved one woman. But she was never meant to be mine. I loved her when she was the intended bride for another. I betrayed him too. I loved her after they married. I took what wasn’t mine. I paid my penance by dying in his stead. But it wasn’t enough to restore the Balance. When the Goddess gave me a chance to make things right, to serve as a soldier of the Pure Ones, I embraced that offer. Even though what I really wanted to do was stay dead and numb. Never to be reawakened in this world. Never to feel again. To yearn and desire and seethe with jealousy and despair at my own helplessness. The Goddess warned me at the moment of my death and rebirth not to want her again. For our paths would cross in the future, though I wouldn’t know the time and place. Nor would I recognize her physical incarnation. For she was never meant to be mine. Will never be mine. But the moment I realized who she was—the Pure Queen I’d been assigned to protect as the Paladin—the moment I recognized her soul, I Fell again. I wanted. I craved. I yearned. I seethed. I resisted. I pushed her away over and over again. Made her angry and confused. Made her hate me. But Goddess above! I cannot change how I feel. I cannot stop wanting her. Cannot stop loving her. All my existence, my body, heart and soul have belonged to one woman. Even though she can never be mine. I love her still. I love her forever. This is the beginning of the end of our story. Judge me if you dare.

Download or read book Rapture written by Sjohnna McCray and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because I can never say anything plainly. Because I always stutter politely. Because there's always the chatter before the kiss. --from "In Need of Subtitles" In this award-winning debut, Sjohnna McCray movingly recounts a life born out of wartime to a Korean mother and an American father serving during the Vietnam War. Their troubled histories, and McCray's own, are told with lyric passion and the mythic undercurrents of discovering one's own identity, one's own desires. What emerges is a self- and family portrait of grief and celebration, one that insists on our lives as anything, please, but singular. Rapture is an extraordinary first collection, with poems of rare grace and feeling.

His second task is find and retrieve the Song of Destiny. Location: Unknown. Time travel will be required. Clues: Too few. But there may be a few harpies, a centaur, a giant Chinese Tibetan Mastiff and other mythical monsters along the way. Accompaniments: His beloved Sorin (who is all he needs!) A spoiled, vain, high maintenance she-dragon (who he doesn't need). But whose enchantment spells have their uses from time to time. Timing: ASAP. Determined by an arbitrary Sandglass in the Jade Emperor’s possession. The end of the world may be just around the corner. And who knows, you too may fall under the enchantment of… SONG OF DRAGONS. *Second in the Dragon Tails series* **Spin-off from the Pure/ Dark Ones series**

Book Synopsis The Postmodern Humanism of Philip K. Dick by : Jason P. Vest
Download or read book The Postmodern Humanism of Philip K. Dick written by Jason P. Vest and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-02-17 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From his 1952 short story 'Roog' to the novels The Divine Invasion and VALIS, few authors have had as great of an impact in the latter half of the 20th century as Philip K. Dick. In The Postmodern Humanism of Philip K. Dick, Jason Vest explores the work of this prolific, subversive, and mordantly funny science-fiction writer. He examines how Dick adapted the conventions of science fiction and postmodernism to reflect humanist concerns about the difficulties of maintaining identity, agency, and autonomy in the latter half of the 20th century. In addition to an extensive analysis of the novel Now Wait for Last Year, Vest makes intellectually provocative comparisons between Dick and the works of Franz Kafka, Jorge Luis Borges, and Italo Calvino. He offers a detailed examination of Dick's literary relationship to all three authors, illuminating similarities between Dick and Kafka that have not previously been discussed, as well as similarities between Dick and Borges that scholars frequently note but fail to explore in detail. Like Kafka, Borges, and Calvino, Dick employs fantastic, unreal, and visionary fiction to reflect the disruptions, dislocations, and depressing realities of twentieth-century life. By comparing him to these other writers, Vest demonstrates that Dick's fiction is a fascinating barometer of postmodern American life even as it participates in an international tradition of visionary literature.

There is some overlap with volume 1 in chronology. I was prolific in 1973 and 1974, said Mark. This volume contains some of the poems I like from that chapter of our story. Mark is already at work organizing and editing his next collection for volume 3, which will comprise additional poems from 1975 and include 1976. Mark has been writing for the past fifty years and is organizing, editing, and publishing his poetry, working his way from historical work toward the present. He continues to write. He and Molly live in Great Falls, Virginia. They have three children and seven grandchildren.
Book Synopsis The Hollow Log Lounge by : R. T. Smith
Download or read book The Hollow Log Lounge written by R. T. Smith and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2003-07-10 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is no fairy tale. / It's all fantastic and bizarre and true. / It's my life, a raspy song, that sounds better if you sing along." The men and women who live and work near Opelika, Alabama, gather at the Hollow Log Lounge. There, under the watchful eye of the stuffed fox behind the bar, they unload their gripes and worries, tell their stories, argue, joke, commune, complain, and confess. In this collection of poems, R. T. Smith paints a vividly imagined portrait of the community in this small-town bar, capturing the chorus of the patrons' voices echoing off the knotted wood-paneled walls. Smith's stand-in, Sam Buckhannon, scribbles stories heard and overheard as tongues loosened by liquor spin out monologues in which southern idiom and vernacular seem perfectly at home within the constraints of measured verse.
