Book excerpt: The author is a native of the West Coast in the United States, getting a start in life in the San Francisco Bay Area. His early years included a multitude of outdoor activities including fishing, mountaineering, rock climbing, and years of work with the National Park Service as a backcountry ranger. Ever since receiving a master’s degree in biology in the 1970s, the author has been heavily involved with the commercial fishing industry, primarily in Alaska. Along the way, however, his career in fisheries has allowed him to accept long-term overseas work assignments in the Soviet Union, the Sultanate of Oman, and in India. In 1979, the author again packed his well-used rucksack and headed off to Nepal and India where, in part, he completed a trek through the Himalayan highlands in the same areas largely described in this book. It was there in those oxygen-deprived mountain valleys that the author first laid plans to write a book whose main character would ultimately be Rishi as described in the present book. The author found himself continuously asking the question, “What would happen if a new age Messiah would visit the earth today?” And more interestingly, the author queried himself, “What would happen if that modern-day Messiah was neither white nor Christian?” This book, Rishi - the Misunderstood Messiah, attempts to provide one potential answer as to what could take place under the above scenario.

And, she discovered a clue to the mystery of her missing grandmother who had been a child-bride - a piece of paper stuck behind an old photograph. Her grandmother’s name is never mentioned in the family, the townspeople spread malignant rumours. Chandni at nineteen is determined to unearth the truth and re-instate honour into her family’s name. After her marriage to the handsome TJ, she must prepare to leave for Manchester, England but is determined to see her mother one more time and flouting social norms travels alone by train when it is attacked by robbers; she undertakes a feat of remarkable daring by pretending to be dead leading to the turning point in her life.... "With a booted foot one of them turned her over...her hackles rose...how dare he? Later, looking back at the events of that day, Chandni would wonder why she had been spared." The indomitable Chandni does not give up and when her grandmother’s old retainer appears on the horizon, it is as if fate decides to lend a hand in the next phase of Chandni’s life. She listens spellbound to the poignant love story of the ill-fated Prince Kunjan and the hauntingly beautiful Kantabali. Her grandparents had appeared to her on purpose. It was up to her to find out why. Chandni will cross continents to join her husband where things are not as she had imagined; she must make yet another choice after the birth of their son. Facing insurmountable odds can she fight her way out of an abusive relationship and return to India with her son where society is sure to reject her? Can the warrior in Chandni rise to fulfill her grandmother’s vision? Spanning a period between early to mid-twentieth century, and moving from eastern to central India then to Manchester, England, Moonlight - The Journey Begins explores the complexities of life, Christian missionary influence on colonial India, the love for one's family that is willing to forgive them for their mistakes, to learn from ancestors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Mukti: Free to Be Born Again” is a history-based autobiographical nonfiction created on three decades of fieldwork in Muslim-majority Bangladesh and Hindu-majority India. Many strands of real-life drama have been weaved together with 1947 Hindu-Muslim, secular-Islamic, and 1971 Islamic-secular, ruling-minority vs. oppressed-majority partitions of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Because of precarious plight, individual and village names have been fictionalized. The story focuses on transformation of a society by the oppressor, oppressed, Islam, and Hinduism. The story ties Indian and Bengali history, views of Muslims and Hindus, role of Bangladeshi Hindu refugee elites in India, pogroms, devastation of minority communities, role of anti-Hindu Islamism and anti-tradition Communism, life of poor oppressed-caste Hindus left behind in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, and more. Dastidar is the first to break a taboo by writing in 1989 about the poor, oppressed Hindu minority left behind by the Hindu-refugee elites in India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the landscapes in indigenous territories are rapidly changing due to increased global industrial demand. This deforestation and urbanization have isolated the indigenous people from practicing ‘traditional ways of life.’ Portrayed in this book is the indigenous people’s perspective of their indigenous knowledge (IK) about the environment and why losing IK is a threat to humans, wildlife, and nature. Insight is shared into why acknowledging IK as a science can help solve climate change, food and nutrition insecurity, and increasing new types of pandemics through evidence‐based stories from indigenous people. Features: • Bridges the fractured space between science and nature. • Documents the perspectives of indigenous peoples about their ancestral knowledge. • Provides ethnographic qualitative comparative case studies of forest‐dwelling indigenous peoples over a 19‐year period. • Covers largely remote indigenous territories of ten tropical countries in the Global South. • Provides evidence‐based stories examining indigenous knowledge’s role in the tropics in preserving diverse landscapes and providing nature‐based solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important and comprehensive volume vividly depicts the current status of women and girls in West Bengal. The analysis has been conducted in the framework of the socio-economic and politico-cultural ambience that has characterized the state in recent decades. The contributors highlight both areas of strength and vulnerability and clearly demonstrate that the status of women cannot be conceived as monolithic or static--it has many facets and is in a state of constant flux. The analysis of macro data is supported by revealing micro studies based on field surveys and an examination of cultural trends.
