Book excerpt: Pupillometry, the study of the eyes’ pupils, has a rich history dating back to the 1800s. For example, to appear “dark with desire,” women once used atropa belladonna (deadly nightshade) as a cosmetic, because the atropine dilated their pupils, making them appear more romantically aroused. We now know that this relationship is largely driven by the activity of the sympathetic nervous system; specifically, a small brainstem nucleus known as the locus coeruleus (LC). Because of tight connections between the musculature of the eyes and LC, monitoring the pupils can reveal important insights into brain activity during mental processes. Many of these processes are related to attention and arousal (cognitive or emotional), with the LC controlling mental readiness via secretion of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine. While these complicated neurochemical processes happen in the brain, they are often overtly observable via pupil dilation. Although pupillometry was popular in the 1960s and 1970s, it fell out of favor until experiencing a renaissance approximately 10 years ago. With the advent of new eye-tracking and neural recording technology, measuring (and analyzing) pupil size is now easier than ever. Because all modern eye-trackers use pupil size in the calculation of gaze location, they also provide researchers with moment-by-moment pupil size measures in output files. Although previously considered “extra” data to support gaze location analyses, researchers have begun to conduct eye-tracking studies solely to gain access to pupil size data. These data have been used to study thought processes in many domains, including cognitive science, psychopathologies, business/marketing, security contexts, and the study of addiction. The diversity of interest in pupillometry is matched by the diversity in approaches taken to data collection, analysis, and interpretation. To date, there exists no book or tutorial review devoted specifically to ensuring that researchers carry out rigorous and reproducible work across these varied domains. Modern Pupillometry: Cognition, Neuroscience, and Practical Applications fills this gap by exploring the history, neuroscience, and methodological considerations of pupillometry research within and beyond psychology. .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction between emotion and cognition is a fundamental issue which has only recently been reintroduced as a legitimate object of study in experimental psychology. This book examines the significant impact that affective processes have on reasoning, and demonstrates how emotional reasoning cannot simply be equated with faulty reasoning. Emotion and Reasoning presents contributions from leading researchers from a variety of disciplines, including experimental cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, clinical neuropsychology, and experimental psychopathology. The opening chapters consider how emotions affect reasoning processes in individuals living with psychopathology. A second section focuses upon experimental investigations of emotion and basic reasoning processes, and a final section explores the physiological bases of emotion-reasoning interaction. Together, the chapters in this volume provide a multidisciplinary overview of key topics on emotion and reasoning, and a survey of recent research in this area. Emotion and Reasoning will be of great interest to advanced students, researchers, and practitioners in the fields of cognitive psychology, clinical psychology, and affective neuroscience.

Book excerpt: Major neurocognitive disorders are one of the leading causes of disability and dependency among the elderly worldwide. Notably, their far-reaching impact extends beyond the estimated 50 million people currently living with a major neurocognitive disorder. As the conversion to Alzheimer's disease (AD) progresses, patients’ symptoms (e.g., memory loss, severe impairments in thinking and behavior) place a heavy toll on their caregivers, family, and friends, who face emotional frustration, coupled with great financial stress. Furthermore, in terms of global cost estimation, the World Health Organization predicted that by 2030, the treatment of patients with AD and other forms of acquired cognitive impairment will cost the healthcare system US$1.7 trillion (or US$2.8 trillion, if corrected for the increase in care costs).

Book excerpt: Neuroscience Research in Short-duration Human Spaceflight encapsulates a groundbreaking neuroscience portfolio conducted during the Axiom Mission 2 in May 2023, offering an examination of the effects of short-duration orbital spaceflight on aspects of the human brain. Addressing limitations in existing literature, the research includes astronauts of diverse ages, genders, and ethnic backgrounds, broadening the understanding of the impact of spaceflight on human physiology. A significant aspect of the suite of studies is the validation of two novel devices providing unprecedented information about the pupillary light reflex and neuroimaging in microgravity: automated pupillometry and functional near-infrared spectroscopy. The portfolio extends to explore spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome, offering valuable contributions to the evolving field of space medicine. Furthermore, the research delves into the utilization of electroencephalography to monitor brain activity, acknowledging its potential in assessing cognitive health, stress levels, and mental workload in real time. Despite promising prospects, challenges in electroencephalography system adaptability within the International Space Station environment are highlighted, emphasizing the need for specialized design considerations. In addition, analysis is extended into the molecular biomarkers through minimally invasive blood monitoring. This book represents a pivotal advancement in space neuroscience, laying the foundation for safer space travel and fostering the development of monitoring tools crucial to observing adverse changes and potentially developing countermeasures that can aid in the establishment of a permanent human presence beyond Earth. - Offers in-depth coverage of the effects of spaceflight on human physiology and the brain - Includes novel data from astronauts on the Axiom Mission 2 - Includes a range of monitoring tools to assess neurological activity during and after spaceflight

This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published as a special issue of Target (issue 25:1, 2013), this volume explores interdisciplinarity in translation and interpreting process research, fields that have enjoyed a boom in the last decade. For this reason, the time was ripe for a reflection on the broad range of methodologies that have been applied in our endeavours to understand both translation and interpreting processes better. The ten chapters provide a snapshot of how translation and interpreting process researchers have availed themselves of concepts and theories developed in other disciplines, such as psychology, the cognitive sciences, journalism, and literary studies, to examine and illuminate their object of study. This collection demonstrates that translation and interpreting process research borrow heavily from other disciplines and call for a consideration of how translation research can become truly interdisciplinary through increased collaboration, synergy, and mutual advancement.
