The design philosophy of the structure economizes on the use of steel by providing supports for the hot cyclone and hot gas duct connecting the cyclone to the boiler while fulfilling the needs for platforms and walkways at the various levels necessary for operational access. Figures 1 through 6 indicate the layout of the plant structure. At the same time the structure for the Coarse Coal Silo V-2 and Limestone Silo V-4 were incorporated and completed. Following completion of the piping pressure drop calculations, pipe sizing and layout drawings, detailed drawings of the piping in different views are being prepared. The pulse combustor is used to burn fine coal particles and provide an ignition source and supplementary heat to the fluid bed. The following is a description of the components: air plenum, fine coal injectors, aerovalves, water jacket, and tailpipe inserts.

But the authors of this paper maintain that this policy is showing signs of being outmoded. The time has come, the authors argue, for the Korean government to stop managing the economy's structural development and to redefine the responsibilities of business and government. Under this proposed compact, the allocation of resources would shift from the government to the private industrial and financial sectors. The transformation of the government bureaucracy from an ad hoc policy role to one of a transparent and predictable regulator is a key to the success of this undertaking. These new directions would present the government with enormous challenges. Greater competitive discipline and regulatory oversight would be required. While dealing with the complexities of the transition, the government would have to maintain macroeconomic stability and the momentum of savings and investment. For comparison, the study examines the industrial economies of France, Germany, Japan, and the United States, which underwent similar shifts.

Book excerpt: The goal of this project is to investigate the conditions in which volatiles will burn within both the dense and freeboard regions of fluidized beds. Experiments using a fluidized bed operated at incipient fluidization will be performed to characterize the effect of particle surface area, initial fuel concentration, and particle type on the inhibition of volatiles within a fluidized bed. The work conducted during the period 4 September, 1993 through 3 December, 1993 is reported in this technical progress report. The experimental work during this time period consists primarily of reactor start-up and data collection. Results of stoichiometric combustion of propane in air at three temperatures and a residence time of approximately 3 s are reported. The results of a detailed chemical kinetic model of propane and methane are reported for the theoretical work for this quarter. These results give further evidence that the inhibition of propane and methane combustion is caused by the sand particles.

Significant progress has been made on the construction of the MIT cold scale model of the Tidd pressurized bubbling fluidized bed combustor. As discussed in the Continuation Application for Cooperative Agreement No. DE-FC21-92MC29264, the final design is a 4:1 scale model of the Tidd combustor based on the simplified set of scaling laws. The model is roughly 8 feet high and has a cross section of 1.5 ft. x 2.8 ft. The cold model design captures 11ft-2in. of the 14ft width and 6ft of the 23ft depth of the Tidd bed along with the full height. The experimental apparatus design consists of four major components: Instrumentation and data acquisition; Fluidized bed; Particle separation, resupply, filtration equipment; and Piping and support structure. Currently, construction of the cold bed is nearly complete. The only work remaining on the bed itself is the construction and installation of the scaled tube bundle, and completion of the joint between the inlet plenum, the distributor plate, and the particle bed.
