It has been the topic of many heated conversations, and perhaps most of all, it has probably caused a lot of consternation among our fellow ministers of the Gospel. This book is not designed to bash any preacher. However, this book does have a twofold purpose.First, it is to expose and mitigate the negative impact, that those individuals who are peddlers of the Word of God, as identified by the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 2:17, are having on the church and especially on those in the church who are still babes in Christ and vulnerable to this brand of corrupt pulpit rhetoric. Further, this book is designed to also hopefully open the eyes of all believers, old and new, veterans or rookies, who are also listening and taking heed to the pulpit peddlers pimpish rhetoric and missing the true intent and nature of the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ!Second—and equally, if not more, importantly—this book sets the record straight and resolves the controversy surrounding the preaching of prosperity from the pulpit. This book engages both the topic and the reader from what is written in God's Word. We avoid popular opinions as well as our own wisdom. Instead, this book resolves the prosperity controversy based on what God has said about it in His inspired Word. By the time you get to the end of this book, you will be certain that it is God's will to bless you, based on His riches in glory. However, you will also be certain that God does so according to His individual will for each of us and that He is able to exceedingly and abundantly give above all we can think or ask.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trygve Johnson invites us to consider a new metaphor of identity of The Preacher as Liturgical Artist. This identity draws on a theology of communion and the doctrine of the vicarious humanity of Christ to relocate the preacher's identity in the creative and ongoing ministry of Jesus Christ. Johnson argues the metaphorical association of the preacher and artist understood within the artistic ministry of Jesus Christ frees the full range of human capacities, including the imagination to bear upon the arts of Christian proclamation. The Preacher as Liturgical Artist connects preachers to the person and work of Jesus Christ, whose own double ministry took the raw materials of the human condition and offered them back to the Father in a redemptive and imaginative fashion through the Holy Spirit. It is in the large creative ministry of Jesus Christ that preachers find their creativity freed to proclaim the gospel bodily within the context of the liturgical work of God's people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The solemn work of Christian ministry demands a man’s all, and that all should be at its best. To engage in ministry halfheartedly is an insult to God and man. Sleep must leave our eyelids before men are allowed to perish. Yet we are all prone to sleep, and students, among the rest, are apt to act the part of the foolish virgins. Therefore, I have sought to speak out my whole soul in the hope that I might not create or foster any dullness in others, and to this end, my lectures are colloquial, familiar, full of anecdote, and often humorous. May He, in whose hand are the churches and their pastors, bless these words to younger brethren in the ministry, and if so, I will count it more than a full reward and will gratefully praise the Lord." - Charles H. Spurgeon Includes lectures 1-10 from Volume 2 Table of Contents Ch. 1: The Holy Spirit in Connection with Our Ministry Ch. 2: The Necessity of Ministerial Progress Ch. 3: The Need of Decision for the Truth Ch. 4: Open-Air Preaching - A Sketch of Its History Ch. 5: Open-Air Preaching - Remarks Thereon Ch. 6: Posture, Action, Gesture, and So Forth (Part I) Ch. 7: Posture, Action, Gesture, and So Forth (Part II) Ch. 8: Earnestness: Its Marring and Maintenance Ch. 9: The Blind Eye and the Deaf Ear Ch. 10: On Conversion As Our Aim

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is much value in "thinking small," say William H. Willimon and Robert L. Wilson. The importance of the small-membership church is illuminated in this thoughtful and insightful assessment. In Preaching and Worship in the Small Church, authors Willimon and Wilson identify the problems facing small churches and offer well-grounded advice for solving them. The need for this is seen in the fact that from one-half to two-thirds of Protestant churches in the United States are small (fewer than two hundred members). These tightly knit little communities of faith focus mainly on the very basic and much-overlooked fundamentals of Christian theology. As the authors note, "It is in such family-like churches that true worship renewal will occur, long before their larger counterparts will taste of this fresh new wine." This is an affirming book: "It affirms the role and basic values of the small church. It affirms the centrality of Word and Sacrament. It affirms the role of the pastor of the small congregation. It affirms the laity and their values. On this foundation of authentic affirmation can be built creative and inspiring ministries, as the laity and the minister serve God together, in and through the small church."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Meuse Clay, who barely escaped a public whipping in the 1760s for preaching without a license; "Old Elizabeth," an ex-slave who courageously traveled to the South to preach against slavery in the early nineteenth century; Harriet Livermore, who spoke in front of Congress four times between 1827 and 1844--these are just a few of the extraordinary women profiled in this, the first comprehensive history of female preaching in early America. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Catherine Brekus examines the lives of more than a hundred female preachers--both white and African American--who crisscrossed the country between 1740 and 1845. Outspoken, visionary, and sometimes contentious, these women stepped into the pulpit long before twentieth-century battles over female ordination began. They were charismatic, popular preachers, who spoke to hundreds and even thousands of people at camp and revival meetings, and yet with but a few notable exceptions--such as Sojourner Truth--these women have essentially vanished from our history. Recovering their stories, Brekus shows, forces us to rethink many of our common assumptions about eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American culture.

Book excerpt: Charles Haddon Spurgeon was a reformed pastor who adhered to the 1689 Baptist Confession of faith. Spurgeon was a prolific writer and preacher. Spurgeon sometimes preached as often as ten times in a week. The quality, as well as the quantity, of his sermons earned him the nickname "Prince of Preachers." Spurgeon adhered to Calvinist views and supported a conservative approach to biblical interpretation while categorically denying the allegorical method. He opposed all liberal and pragmatic tendencies of the church. Witnesses claim that he delivered powerful sermons that mesmerized listeners with his oratorical prowess. The sermons were unfailing accurate and plumbed the depths of spiritual thought. Spurgeon authored many works, including thousands of sermons, an autobiography, biblical commentaries, a book on prayer, as well as multiple prayers, poems, and hymns. Lee Ramsey Jr.mines the riches of southern fiction and discovers a colorful assortment of ministers who arise out of the religious South. At once mystical and mischievous, these ministers haunt the margins of southern life while preaching a gospel that startles and compels. But their oddness is also their appeal--and part of their gift. For through these colorful portraits of Christian ministry, today's readers are challenged to think about what matters in ministry and to re-imagine ministry in ways that bring new life to the church and community. Throughout, Ramsey shows how ministers such as Roger Hagan in Will Campbell's The Conventionand Hazel Motes in Flannery O'Connor's Wise Bloodcan help show us the stumbling blocks to faithful ministry and steer clergy and congregations forward in today's world.
