Book excerpt: Bernd Schumacher, M.D., who grew up in Germany and worked as a medical doctor in the Middle East and the United States of America, looks back at the highs, lows, and the lessons he learned while living an exciting, international life in this autobiography. As a boy, he grew up with a fascination with the American dream, decorating his room with the American flag, models of an Apollo Rocket and the lunar lander. His wallpaper featured the Manhattan Skyline, with the Twin Towers still intact, of course. After immigrating to the United States, he met his future wife, and they enrolled at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, Illinois, in 1986. After medical school, it was on to residency, with some time spent collecting model trains along the way. In 2000, he moved to Saudi Arabia, and there his working hours were much more regulated. He had lots of household help, including a gardener and a woman to help with the children and the household. The author’s experiences have taught him to empathize with the plight of others. In recalling his life, he argues that the global village concept is inevitable but that we must strive to preserve local cultures.

Book excerpt: By means of interviews with, and contributions from, prominent international figures, Axis of Freedom examines the dramatic world events which unfolded from 11 September 2001 to the end of occupation of Iraq in the summer of 2004. Many books have been written on the war on terror, but none include the personal views and opinions of so many top military and political leaders. The contributions are linked by a series of essays to form a compelling narrative of the new way of war. In their own words the key decision-makers such as Donald Rumsfeld, Richard Perle and Geoff Hoon talk about the strategic dilemmas. The military implementation of the political decisions are discussed by leaders such as the head of the US Air Force, the former British Chief of Defence Staff, Lord Guthrie, and the Royal Navy's First Sea Lord. Highly charged critiques by George Galloway MP are also included, as well as Iraq's deputy prime minister, Tariq Aziz, who was interviewed on the eve of the war. Senior foreign correspondents such as Channel Four's Lindsey Hilsum add their own frontline assessments. In addition, leading academic analysts such as Dr Paul Cornish put the political and military debates in context.

This book was released on with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rogue Chinese missile field commander duped Axis of Evil member nations into a joint attack on the United States with a North Korean super missile. When the commander pressed the launch button, a seven-nation, 60-megaton nuclear warhead was blasted into a flight path that was meant to end on California’s fragile San Andreas Fault. Fortunately for the United States, its Central Intelligence Agency learned of the pending missile attack and was able to respond with Operation Nonferrous, the only viable, quick-reaction plan it had available. TAKING OUT NORTH KOREA’S SUPER MISSILE (The Axis of Evil & West Coast 11/26) describes in complete detail all of the events that occurred before and after the launch button was depressed at the Lop Nor, China, missile complex on November 26. It is must-read material for anybody deeply concerned about rapidly unfolding, spiraling-out-of-control type of world events that can lead to nuclear war. It is must-read material also for those in love, those who have lost loved ones (esp. an infant), and for those special couples blessed with true conjugal love.

Book excerpt: The legendary spy thriller from bestselling author Robert Littell-whose newest book, The Company, is receiving rave reviews and acclaim-is finally back in print. Fans, reviewers, and booksellers will cheer. This first novel, originally published in 1973, established Littell as a master and immediately elevated him to the ranks of John le Carré, Len Deighton, and Graham Greene. The Defection of A. J. Lewinteris a masterpiece of irony and intrigue, an unconventional and gripping anatomy of a defection. A. J. Lewinter is an American scientist, for years an insignificant cog in America's complex defense machinery. While at an academic conference in Tokyo, he contacts the KGB station chief and tells him he wants to defect. He tantalizes the Russians with U.S. military secrets he claims to possess, but is his defection genuine? Neither the Russians nor the Americans are sure and Lewinter is swept up in a terrifying political chess match of deceit and treachery. Each side struggles to anticipate its opponent's next move and the superpowers are locked in a deadly contest that exploits friendships, destroys loyalties, and manipulates human beings as expendable pawns. Deft and dazzlingly plotted, this is the book that introduced Robert Littell-the opening shot of a brilliant career.

Book excerpt: In Breaking the Real Axis of Evil, ambassador Mark Palmer has the gumption to argue what diplomats and political leaders dare not speak: that global peace will not be achieved until democracies replace the world's remaining dictatorships. We know that these dictators are at the root of terrorism and war. Under their stony gaze, millions have gone to their deaths, a great tidal wave of refugees has swept across the planet, and nations have been driven into poverty, famine, and despair. Drawing on over 25 years of extensive diplomatic experience, Ambassador Palmer asks us to embrace a bold vision of a world made safe by democracy. This is the story of the last 46 dictators, the strategy and tactics to oust them, and the need to empower the people of every nation to control their own destinies.

Book Synopsis The Search for a Unified Korea by : Eui-Gak Hwang
Download or read book The Search for a Unified Korea written by Eui-Gak Hwang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-03-11 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Korea’s brinkmanship diplomacy has continued to disturb the world with its seemingly reckless missile testing, as the country’s leader, Kim Jong-Il, is rumored to be terminally ill with pancreatic cancer. North Korea appears to be in a state of serious internal crisis not only because its dictatorial system, albeit skillful and ruthless leadership, is inherently unstable, if not skillful and ruthless leadership, but also because the main pillar of Kim Jong-Il’s legitimacy is rapidly eroding due to both mass starvations and the exodus of grassroots and mass exodus of the North Korean people into nearby regions. The main objective of this book is to explore the probability of North Korea’s implosion, and second to search for a feasible way for Korean reuni?cation as a possible consequence of a big bang event on the peninsula. The geopolitics of the Korean Peninsula is historically very complicated as Korea is bordered and s- rounded by four big powers; namely, China, Russia, Japan, and the United States. Each country has its own varying degrees of political, economic, and military stakes with respect to the Korean Peninsula. Thus, the Land of the Morning Calm has remained divided since 1945 mainly as a result of the domain war among these super powers. As the North nears a turning point, however, there is a new possibility for the two Koreas to reunite if the international environments work in their favor, and if both countries are well prepared to assume reuni?cation.

Download or read book The Right Man written by David Frum and published by Random House. This book was released on 2003-01-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Right Man is the first inside account of a historic year in the Bush White House, by the presidential speechwriter credited with the phrase axis of evil. David Frum helped make international headlines when President George W. Bush’s 2002 State of the Union address linked international terrorists to Iran, Iraq, and North Korea. But that was only one moment during a crucial time in American history, when a president, an administration, and a country were transformed. Frum worked with President Bush in the Oval Office, traveled with him aboard Air Force One, and studied him closely at meetings and events. He describes how Bush thinks—what this conservative president believes about religion, race, the environment, Jews, Muslims, and America’s future. Frum takes us behind the scenes of one of the most secretive administrations in recent history, with revealing portraits of Karl Rove, Karen Hughes, Condoleezza Rice, and many others. Most significant, he tells the story of the transformation of George W. Bush: how a president whose administration began in uncertainty became one of the most decisive, successful, and popular leaders of our time. Before becoming a White House speechwriter, David Frum was a highly regarded author of books and political commentary and an influential voice on the pages of The Wall Street Journal and The Weekly Standard. His commentary has been described by William F. Buckley as “the most refreshing ideological experience in a generation.” Now, in The Right Man, we see Frum as a front-row observer and participant. Not since Peggy Noonan’s account of her time in the Reagan White House has an insider portrayed a sitting president with such precision, verve, honest admiration, and insight. The Right Man will command international attention for its thoughtful account of George W. Bush in the midst of his greatest challenge. It will be an essential reference for anyone seeking to understand who our president really is and how he is likely to lead us in the future.
Download or read book Truth written by Johnny George and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As shattered fragments of a buried mirror may be cleaned and pieced together to portray a reflection, so the book TRUTH clears away dirt and muck of untruth. The author fits shards of knowledge like pieces of a puzzle to display what may be a very real reflection of ultimate high-level truth. In a search that has spanned over five decades, there has been no agenda other than eliminating untruth to reveal a clear image of reality. Pertinent facets of many, many sources have been inter-connected in the creation of this book: · The Bible, · Eastern philosophy, · the Dead Sea scrolls, · the Nag Hammadi texts, · the archives of Edgar Cayce and Seth, · American Indian Wisdom, · ancient Toltec knowledge, · science, physics, and quantum mechanics, · decades of magazine and news articles, · and such modern thinkers, teachers, and writers as Rhonda Byrne, Depak Chopra, David Deutsch, Brian Greene, Bruce Lipton, Eckhart Tolle, Neale Donald Walsch, and many others. TRUTH offers evidence that awareness of certain knowledge may awaken humanity to our natural progression in spirit. Signs point to a path that can bring us to merge in a collective consciousness where the oneness of all may be realized—where separate beliefs, both spiritual and scientific, may coalesce and be transcended—where we may evolve to find our true nature as nonviolent spiritual beings. When many signs point the same direction, who would follow the one that doesn’t? When answers add up and make sense, why do so many believe things that don’t? TRUTH has been said to be among the most informative, the most comprehensive books ever written and has even been called the “best book ever …” This new second edition is vastly improved over the first. It includes a Preface with information about where the book came from and why it was written. The new version also contains the results of more biblical research and quotes, and many enhancements and additional details throughout.

Book Synopsis Once in a Promised Land by : Laila Halaby
Download or read book Once in a Promised Land written by Laila Halaby and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once in a Promised Land is the story of Jassim and Salwa, who left the deserts of their native Jordan for those of Arizona, each chasing mirages of opportunity and freedom. Although the couple live far from Ground Zero, they cannot escape the dust cloud of paranoia settling over the nation. A hydrologist, Jassim believes passionately in his mission to make water accessible to all people, but his work is threatened by an FBI witch hunt for domestic terrorists. A Palestinian now twice displaced, Salwa embraces the American dream. She grapples to put down roots in an unwelcoming climate, becoming pregnant against her husband's wishes. When Jassim kills a teenage boy in a terrible accident and Salwa becomes hopelessly entangled with a shadowy young American, their tenuous lives in exile and their fragile marriage begin to unravel. Once in a Promised Land is a dramatic an achingly honest look at what it means to straddle cultures, to be viewed with suspicion, and to struggle to find safe haven. "Laila Halaby is a deeply gifted writer. She describes complicated, culture-spanning lives in a poetic prose that is clean and compelling. There is no glossing over pain here, but the power of telling-richly human voices and the redemption of honesty." -Naomi Shihab Nye on West of the Jordan "Once in a Promised Land tells a story you won't find anywhere else. It gives the human scale to big events and with great fluency captures the heart and soul of what it's like to be living in America in these troubling times." -Larry Dark, director of The Story Prize "Set in the early days of post-September 11th America, ONCE IN A PROMISED LAND draws its structure from Arabian folklore and the western fairy tale, turning both inside out to illuminate the mythic search for home and identity, the universal hunger of the soul for the genuine, and the wounding yet redemptive nature of love itself. In this timely and utterly original novel, Laila Halaby has crafted a deeply resonant tale of our tangled and common humanity." -Andre Dubus III, author of House of Sand and Fog "Once in a Promised Land is an intricate braid of secrets, some intimate, some the brutal and nasty ones abroad these days in a land whose promise and promises have been shattered by suspicion and hostility. Laila Halaby, who still dares to dream of an intact culture, has written a forceful novel that catches innocence and the hope for wholeness in the web of its complex plot and squeezes them until they bleed." -Rosellen Brown "Halaby has created a beautiful, poignant tale about America in a dark time and peopled it with exquisitely crafted characters who wring our hearts." -Chitra Divakaruni, author of Queen of Dreams and Mistress of Spices "Once in a Promised Land is a gem of a novel. Halaby creates an engaging social commentary on immigrant life in a post-9/11 America, but does not come off as preachy or disapproving. Rather, Halaby's fluid prose reads like an ethereal, modern-day fairy tale as she weaves in Arab myths and stories throughout the novel. The result is a richly layered tale and unique introspective into the immigrant experience that many will enjoy and savor." -Review, About.com Sometimes you run out of adjectives. Or the adjectives lose their luster. What if I say that Once in a Promised Land is brilliant, insightful, heartbreaking, enchanting-what does that even mean anymore? But this novel is brilliant because the prose glows, sends off heat. Insightful because it allows us to see into a place that most of us don't know about. Heartbreaking because you can feel the situation that these characters are trapped in. And enchanting because it's told in the form of a fairy tale that lets us believe that, somehow, these poor souls may be able to rescue themselves.-Carol
