Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the Mississippi Historical Society, Vol. 8 It is gratifying to note the fact that the War between the States and the period of Reconstruction are still engaging the talents of the patriotic citizens of Mississippi. It is natural that a worthy survivor of the Lost Cause should be impressed with the importance of taking stock of the efforts which have been made and which are being made to honor the memories of those Con federate heroes who lost their lives in the great struggle. The contributions here published on biography and legislative reform show the continuation of interest in these important subjects. The new spirit of industrial activity in the State finds echo in the contribution devoted to one of the rapidly developing industries of the South. The citizens of Mississippi and Louisiana will doubtless find much to interest them in the contribution devoted to the boundary controversy between these Commonwealths. To provoke research into even its remote and unfrequented corners; and, chiefly, to place more prominently before the people of his much-loved State a poet too little known, is the double purpose of this essay. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of the Mississippi Historical Society, Vol. 12 The Mississippi Historical Society is fortunate in the character of the contributions which have been submitted for publication in this volume. The readers of other volumes of the series will be gratified to find herein interesting contributions from two investigators whose writings they have enjoyed heretofore. Dr. Fleming's article adds another chapter to his valuable Life of Jefferson Davis, which will undoubtedly be an illuminating contribution to Southern biography. Captain McNeilly's thorough and discriminating contributions to the reconstruction history of the State have won for him a place in the front rank of Mississippi historians. One of the most notable features of this volume is the exceptional number of valuable articles on the educational history of the State. All of these contributions are of more than local interest, since they treat of men and events, more or less known and appreciated by the students of other parts of the country. The limits of this volume permit the publication of only two out of a large number of county histories of reconstruction that are in the hands of the editor. Readers who have expressed an interest in this important phase of work will be gratified to learn that other contributions on the subject will appear in the succeeding volumes of the series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mississippi Law Journal, Vol. 8: October, 1935 Mr. Martin Members of the Bar of the State of Mississippi, ladies and gentlemen, this is an honor I did not expect when I came up here today. The only thing I can say is I am so glad to see so many of you here, and I trust that this meeting will be a very success ful one, and will make for the upbuilding of law and order, decency and right living in the state of Mississippi. I thank you. (applause.) the president: Ladies and gentlemen, I cannot ref rain, before going further with the program, from an expression of senti ment with reference to this truth and veracity proposition. I am very fearful that if the Clarion Ledger has Charlie Engle as a reverend, it has forever lost its reputation for truth and veracity. Furthermore, I want to say that it is, a fact that when we went to arrange the entertainment here, I had the temerity to suggest that we have a hog-calling contest, and nominated Earl Brewer, Marion Reiley, and Chancellor Amis as principal contestants. Chancellor Amis won a hog-calling contest eighty-two years ago last May. Do you know the blue bloods down at Natchez turned thumbs down on that; they would not care, they said, to hear Marion Reiley calling hogs. N ow, ladies and gentlemen, we come to the President's address. I belong to the Association of Life Insurance Counsel. They met In. New York several years ago. Joe Conwell of the Penn Mutual LI fe Insurance Company, the bad boy of the Association, was there. A distinguished member of that Association had a paper just about that size (indicating the President's address). It was not bradded together, and as he read and finished a page, he put that page at the back, whereupon the irrepressible Conwell said, Please, please, when you have read a page, lay it down on the -table so we will know how far you have gotten and how much further you have to go. If you are commiserating with yourself having to listen to only a part of this paper, just think how much of a burden it was on the man who had to write it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications, Vol. 4: Centenary Series While I write with the express purpose of emphasizing the activities of the troops of the Mississippi Territory and of drawing attention to many erroneous statements and omissions concerning them, yet it is my welcome task to record the brilliant exploits and valor of all troops who took part under General Andrew Jackson in the campaign against the Creeks and British. In the story of the coast campaign against Great Britain and her allies the strong spirit of American nationality prevailing in the far southern section during this period is insistent and compelling. In view of the weak defense maintained in this region, had this spirit been less active the war in all probability would have been as lacking in valor here as it was in the North. The documentary and printed sources to which I have had access, many of which have been collected by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, are as follows.
