Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: A global, fast-changing world requires of public relations a more holistic approach than most theories have so far provided. This paper aims at illustrating the social role of public relations through its endeavors in building and maintaining multi-sector partnerships for social change. It does so in two steps. First, a multi-disciplinary literature review on multi-sector partnerships is distilled in nine propositions explaining the contribution of public relations roles and activities to building and maintaining effective multi-sector partnerships. Second, the resulting propositions are discussed in light of a case study of an educational multi-sector partnership from Romania. Finally, it is concluded that eight out of nine propositions were supported by the case, which is indicative of a considerable role of public relations in the multi-sector collaborative practice. Further research is suggested to continue testing the proposed propositions, with the ultimate purpose of theoretical grounding.

Book excerpt: Recently, scholars have begun to broaden their understandings of both the nonprofit sector and its role in public sector collaborations, as well as the inclusion of the private sector as a third potential partner. Termed 'cross-sector social-oriented partnerships (hereafter, CSSPs)' by Selsky and Parker (2005), such arrangements are "cross-sector projects formed explicitly to address social issues and causes that actively engage the partners on an ongoing basis (850)." While frameworks (Brinkerhoff, 2002) and collaborative 'how-tos' (Gazley, 2008; Gazley & Brudney, 2007) have been set forth, the nature of such collaborations remains neglected in the literature to date. In other words, we do not know how such collaborations are actually occurring, nor do we know the effects of such collaborations on their individual participants. This is consistent with Selsky and Parker's (2005) call to examine the micro issues associated with such CSSPs. In response to this gap, this dissertation was a study of CSSPs comprised of agents from the public (government), nonprofit, and private sectors. Specifically, using data from a sample of 80 individuals serving on CSSP teams with varying social missions in arts and culture, education, health, child advocacy, and human services, hypotheses are proposed in accordance with the following research question: what are the relationships between team selection control and job satisfaction, organizational commitment, team satisfaction, and team commitment within these CSSPs? The results of this research confirm that team selection control is positively associated with job satisfaction, which in turn is positively associated with organizational commitment. Additionally, team justice plays a moderating role in the selection control - job satisfaction relationship, suggesting that organizations interested in collaborations to address complex social issues foster justice perceptions and understand that individual participants hold organizations accountable, over and above the CSSP itself.
