Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first scholarly work to place the function of fund raising within the field of public relations, redefining it as a specialization responsible for the management of communication between a charitable organization and its donor publics. Combining her academic interest in communication with her experience as a fund raiser, the author has produced one of the few critical studies on fund raising, challenging current perspectives and employing systems theory and the concept of organizational autonomy to lead to a new and different approach. Until now, fund raising has been an anomaly, without an academic home and with few general theories to guide practitioner behavior. This book theoretically grounds fund raising and develops a theory that provides a fuller understanding of one of the fastest growing occupations in the nonprofit sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fund raising in the United States is big business. Some 350,000 nonprofit organizations employ an army of fund raisers, all competing for their share, employing the latest technology in computerized direct mail and telemarketing. The American public is swamped with appeals on behalf of this cause or that, as ever more ambitious financial goals are set. Equally intense are demands on active citizens to staff fund-raising drives; a 1987 survey found that 48 percent of Americans engage in some sort of volunteer work. Popular philanthropy, financed by organized, high-pressure fund raising, is uniquely American. This classic history of fund raising in the United States, first published in 1965, has been out of print for the last twenty-two years despite continuing demand. It covers the role of fund raising from the seventeenth century to the present, with emphasis on mass secular fund raising in the twentieth century (religious fund raising is excluded). It documents techniques and problems that are central to the profession today, as well as events and persons on the cutting edge. As both Cutlip and Schwartz indicate in this new edition, since 1964 the climate for philanthropy has been conditioned by two factors-public policies and public perception. Reduction in federal grants to charities and changes in tax policies have increased the gap between needs and resources. Public perception is also a problem, as the result of rampant scandals. Competition for the philanthropic dollar is keener than ever; but the picture is not all gloomy. Schwartz outlines nine positive trends. Among them is increasing interest in philanthropic studies in many areas of academia, including history, sociology, economics, public policy, behavioral sciences, social work, and American studies. There is also increasing interest overseas, as American approaches to fund raising become an example for other nations.

Book excerpt: Foregrounding the work professional communicators do to support public health and social missions, this book examines how the principles and practices of public relations can be applied by nonprofit, government, and corporate entities working to understand and improve public health and social conditions. Many organizations attempt to influence prosocial behaviors, such as donating one’s time, money, or talents; participating in advocacy or activism; or otherwise working to protect public health or inspire social change. This book explores research and practice related to communication and other factors involved in motivating such efforts. Each chapter focuses on a different topic, providing definitions, summarizing research, and explaining how it has been or can be applied to practice, and ends with discussion questions to consider and references for further reading. Ideally placed for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in public relations, health communication, or strategic communication as well as for communications professionals looking to apply research to their practice.

Beyond Persuasion provides healthcare managers with a guide to using strategic communication to meet both personal and professional objectives in the digital age. Whether healthcare managers are conducting meetings with employees, answering massive amounts of email, or keeping up with Twitter feeds, their success ultimately depends on their strategic communication skills. The first book to offer a strategic approach to managerial communication in health care, Beyond Persuasion is full of valuable information on issues such as how to develop fundamental skills, communicate strategically with internal groups such as employees and medical staff, and develop relationships with the external community and both traditional and new media. In this new edition, Patricia J. Parsons has added new references and resources and has updated the text with fresh material on how to weave social media tools, tactics, strategies, and policies into the fundamental discussion about communication as a personal, professional, and organizational priority.

Their public relations challenges, however, have routinely been understudied. Budgetary and staffing restraints often limit how these organizations carry out their fundraising, public awareness and activism efforts, and client outreach. This volume explores a range of public relations theories and topics important to the management of nonprofit organizations, including crisis management, communicating to strengthen engagement online and offline, and recruiting and retaining volunteer and donor support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a ground-breaking departure from existing works, almost all of which are how-to manuals based on anecdotal evidence, this is the first academic textbook on fund raising. By integrating practical knowledge with social science theory and research, it presents a comprehensive approach to the function, from its legal and ethical principles to the managerial process by which gifts are raised. Territory previously uncharted in the literature is explored, such as the historical and organizational contexts of contemporary practice. Explanations of programs, techniques, and publics introduce a new system for understanding fund raising's major concepts. Unlike efforts in established fields, most of the material represents original scholarship undertaken to produce a first-time text. The book's main purpose is to teach students about fund raising--a high-demand, high-paying occupation that will continue to expand into the 21st century as the need for trained practitioners exceeds the supply. During the last decade, fund-raising education moved into the formal classroom and away from an apprenticeship tradition of senior practitioners mentoring newcomers. Yet until now, there has not been a textbook to support this evolving professionalism. Faculty have been reluctant to define fund raising as an academic subject in the absence of a theory-based teaching resource, and courses usually have been assigned to part-time instructors hired from the practice. This textbook addresses the void. It is designed for graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses dealing with fund raising as a primary or secondary subject. Among its features, each chapter points out research gaps and opportunities--such as problems and theories for master's theses and doctoral dissertations--and ends with a list of suggested readings. The text is appropriate for the diverse academic areas in which fund raising, nonprofit management, and philanthropy are taught, including public administration, management, arts and humanities, education, social work, economics, and sociology. Because of its public relations orientation, it is particularly suited for courses offered in that discipline. Additional audiences are practitioners enrolled in professional development programs; CEOs, trustees, and others interested in self-study; and scholars who need serious literature on the subject.
