This book was released on 1985 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic dilemma of the mixed economy is to strike a balance between the public and private sectors of the economy. This book is an exploration of the dilemma as it exists in the 1980s and the policies available to influence the balance. The volume poses the problem in terms of how to optimize welfare by the use of the allocative mechanisms of public policy and private markets. While identifying decision criteria for the demarcation of public and private sectors, State and Market sheds new light on the ways in which the two sectors interact. The boundaries that have been drawn between state and market receive a reassessment in the light of phenomena such as structured markets, competitive bureaucracies and underground economies. An important contribution of the book is a discussion of the decision criteria applicable to choices bearing on the size of the public sector and the inclusion in the public choice process of efficiency promoting mechanisms. Theories advanced to explain public sector growth are set forth and the significance of cultural variables is explained. The book makes a valuable contribution to the important area of public policy and the mixed economy and will be of interest to political scientists and political economists.

Book Synopsis India, Mixed Enterprise and Western Business by : Daniel L. Spencer
Download or read book India, Mixed Enterprise and Western Business written by Daniel L. Spencer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of one type of relation between public authorities and the private sector. In the modern world it is becoming increasingly clear that these two ways of organizing economic life must learn to get along with each other and develop vehicles of mutual advantage. This is especially true in the re lations between advanced and developing economies because for historical reasons, the development of non-Western economies today is taking a course quite different from the path of the advanced business economies of the West. It is desirable for both spheres to try and understand each other and look for ways of getting along. International tensions can be alleviated to the degree that positive attitudes are taken and mechanisms of the kind dealt with in this book are created. Much of the problem is simply one of semantics. The term "socialism" or "socialistic pattern of society", for example, which is often used in India as a positive word has very negative conno tations for Americans. There are, of course, socialists in India who would make their economy entirely publicly owned, indis tinguishable from the Chinese or the Russian, but the vast majority of leaders associated with the dominant party in India visualize a present and future mixed economy not too different from that reached by the United States through a very different road. We in the United States have been nurtured on the belief in private enterprise.
Book Synopsis Public Enterprise and Economic Development by : A. H. Hanson
Download or read book Public Enterprise and Economic Development written by A. H. Hanson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 803 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1959, the subject of this book is an aspect of economic development which, despite its importance, had rarely attracted more than incidental attention at the time. The author’s interest in public enterprise in underdeveloped countries was stimulated by a year’s residence in Turkey. He felt the time had come for a general comparative study. Defining comparative as (1) between developed and underdeveloped countries, and (2) between different underdeveloped countries at dissimilar stages of development or with dissimilar development perspectives. The purpose of the first is to discover what the developed can offer the underdeveloped by way of adaptable experience and relevant ideas; that of the second to examine the use of public enterprise in the many different social, economic and political contexts to be found in the less advanced parts of the world.

Book Synopsis Rethinking Public-Private Partnerships by : Carsten Greve
Download or read book Rethinking Public-Private Partnerships written by Carsten Greve and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global financial crisis hit the world in a remarkable way in late 2008. Many governments and private sector organizations, who had considered Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to be their future, were forced to rethink their strategy in the wake of the crisis, as a lot of the available private funding upon which PPPs relied, was suddenly no longer available to the same extent. At the same time, governments and international organizations, like the European Union, were striving to make closer partnerships between the public sector and the private sector economy a hallmark for future policy initiatives. This book examines PPPs in the context of turbulent times following the global financial crisis (GFC). PPPs can come in many forms, and the book sets out to distinguish between the many alternative views of partnerships; a project, a policy, a symbol of the role of the private sector in a mixed economy, or a governance tool - all within a particular cultural and historical context. This book is about rethinking PPPs in the wake of the financial crisis and aims to give a clearer picture of the kind of conceptual frameworks that researchers might employ to now study PPPs. The crisis took much of the glamour out of PPPs, but theoretical advances have been made by researchers in a number of areas and this book examines selected new research approaches to the study of PPPs.

Book Synopsis Public Enterprise in Less Developed Countries by : Leroy P. Jones
Download or read book Public Enterprise in Less Developed Countries written by Leroy P. Jones and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of papers chosen from the Boston Area Public Enterprise Group Conference that was held in 1980 and concentrated on public enterprises in less-developed countries. The Boston Area Public Enterprise Group is composed of scholars dedicated to understanding the public enterprises operating in the world's mixed economies. Public enterprises are government-owned firms that sell goods or services in a market. Involved in public production for private consumption, they are a hybrid of government and private enterprise. Thus, an analysis of public enterprise requires insights from economics, management, political science and law. Each of these disciplines is represented in addressing the following questions: Why public enterprise? Who should control public enterprise? How are decisions made in practice? How do public enterprises behave in international markets? How does risk and uncertainty alter public enterprise decisions'? How are incentive structures to be designed'? How do public enterprises compare with other public policy tools for dealing with particular problems'? The contributions combine theory and practice in analysing a variety of less-developed countries.
