Push-button, toggle, and rotary switches were each paired with a master push-button switch to form the three sets used to turn an indicator light on and off. The subjects were instructed to perform the task as fast as possible by alternateACTUATION OF THE TWO SWITCHES OF EACH SET. Each subject also performed in straight and level flight with each set of switches for control data. Performance data, along with aircraft accelerative forces in three dimensions, was recorded on a high-speed oscillograph. Small decrements were found in speed of operation of all three sets of switches in the 0-G environment in comparison with performance at 1-G. The toggle switch set showed the greatest decrement, the rotary switch set the least decrement. The push-button switch set was operated most rapidly in both 1-G and 0-G conditions. (Author).

Book Synopsis Weightlessness and Performance by : J. P. Loftus
Download or read book Weightlessness and Performance written by J. P. Loftus and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The implications of weightlessness as encountered in space flight are discussed, and the known research dealing with the psychological and physiological effects of zero gravity is critically reviewed. Topics are grouped under the headings of orientation, psychomotor performance, and physiological functions, with a special section on methods of research. The major problem area indicated is the effect of weightlessness on gravity oriented sensory mechanisms, particularly the vestibular apparatus, and consequently on both physiological functions and psychomotor performance. An extensive bibliography is included.

Download or read book Space Psychology and Psychiatry written by Nick Kanas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-18 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book was voted Winner of the 2004 International Academy of Astronautics Life Sciences Award. The second edition deals with psychological, psychiatric, and psychosocial issues that affect people who live and work in space. Unlike other books that focus on anecdotal reports and ground-based simulation studies, this book emphasizes the findings from psychological research conducted during actual space missions. Both authors have been active in such research.

Download or read book Medical and Biological Problems of Space Flight written by Geoffrey H. Bourne and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical and Biological Problems of Space Flight covers the proceedings of the conference held in Nassau, the Bahamas. The book focuses on the biological and medical problems of space flight, as well as advanced manned space systems, cardiovascular adaptability, weightlessness, and remote visual monitoring. The selection first offers information on the development of manned space vehicles and advanced manned space systems, including manned satellite and space stations, safety considerations, and man-machine aspects. The book also takes a look at Marsflight II space cabin simulator and device for simulating weightlessness. Discussions focus on the psychological aspects of real and simulated weightlessness; physiological effects of real and simulated weightlessness; and critique of simulation excellence. The publication examines maintenance of cardiovascular adaptability during prolonged weightlessness and the physical, biological, and medical aspects of weightlessness. The text then ponders on remote visual monitoring during extended space missions and cosmic ray shower production in manned space vehicles. Topics include electron-proton showers and limitations imposed by communications on transmission of pictorial information from a space vehicle. The selection is a valuable reference for readers interested in the medical and biological problems of space flight.
