Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central argument of this book is that cognition is not the whole story in understanding intellectual functioning and development. To account for inter-individual, intra-individual, and developmental variability in actual intellectual performance, it is necessary to treat cognition, emotion, and motivation as inextricably related. Motivation, Emotion, and Cognition: Integrative Perspectives on Intellectual Functioning and Development: *represents a new direction in theory and research on intellectual functioning and development; *portrays human intelligence as fundamentally constrained by biology and adaptive needs but modulated by social and cultural forces; and *encompasses and integrates a broad range of scientific findings and advances, from cognitive and affective neurosciences to cultural psychology, addressing fundamental issues of individual differences, developmental variability, and cross-cultural differences with respect to intellectual functioning and development. By presenting current knowledge regarding integrated understanding of intellectual functioning and development, this volume promotes exchanges among researchers concerned with provoking new ideas for research and provides educators and other practitioners with a framework that will enrich understanding and guide practice.

Book excerpt: About the book: The book Indian English Novel: Styles and Motives is an anthology of twenty two well explored research articles. It presents diverse facets of motive and stylistic approach adopted by the eminent Indian English novelists from time to time. Authors have tried to bring into surface many new ideas related to Indian English novel. Works and authors taken into consideration are made worthy to be discussed in this anthology and the main focus of this anthology lies in throwing light upon the style and the motive of Indian English novel written by both native and diasporic writers. Works of almost all the Indian novelists from late Indian writer Rabindranath Tagore to recent Indian writer Chetan Bhagat are taken into focal point of discussion and the anthology has hardly missed any important master of fiction and his or her important work of art as regards Indian English novel. In addition to content, the introductory note of this anthology is very resourceful to understand the changing trend of style and motif of Indian English novel. The book will be helpful for both academic and research purposes. About the Editor: Dipak Giri- M.A. (Double), B.Ed. - is a Ph. D. I was in the first grade, I believe, when the ideas that eventually developed into this social psychology of creativity first began to germinate. The occasion was art class, a weekly Friday afternoon event during which we were given small reproductions of the great masterworks and asked to copy them on notepaper using the standard set of eight Crayola® crayons. I had left kindergarten the year before with encour agement from the teacher about developing my potential for artistic creativity. During these Friday afternoon exercises, however, I developed nothing but frus tration. Somehow, Da Vinci's "Adoration of the Magi" looked wrong after I'd fin ished with it. I wondered where that promised creativity had gone. I began to believe then that the restrictions placed on my artistic endeavors contributed to my loss of interest and spontaneity in art. When, as a social psy chologist, I began to study intrinsic motivation, it seemed to me that this moti vation to do something for its own sake was the ingredient that had been missing in those strictly regimented art classes. It seemed that intrinsic motivation, as defined by social psychologists, might be essential to creativity. My research pro gram since then has given considerable support to that notion. As a result, the social psychology of creativity presented in this book gives prominence to social variables that affect motivational orientation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1983. Psychological data are segments of life histories; as such they are ordered sequences of observations and by definition time series. Yet they are often anything but well behaved; what regularities and invariances they have are buried from all but the most persistent investigator. The most common methods of representing quantitative results in psychology are frozen outside time; thus they deliberately average out much of the sequential structure that holds any sparse clues to the nature of processes within the organism. This review, whose simple aim is to bring together in an illuminating juxtaposition on basic results in both time series analysis and in experimental psychology, thus. cuts across traditions within psychology.

Book excerpt: First published in 1983. This book is primarily intended to make a theoretical contribution, to suggest a somewhat novel way of approaching the problems of human motivation, to break from tradition. The aim of this work is to stimulate the reader to think on a broad scale about big problems and to temper these thoughts with the detailed facts of empirical investigations.
