Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of psychodrama allows participants to create a world for themselves, free of usual rules and constraints. This freedom from all ordinary conventions is what Moreno called 'Surplus Reality', and is one of the most vital, curative and mysterious elements of psychodrama. In this book, Leif Dag Blomkvist and Zerka Moreno explore the depths of this long-neglected concept. In addition, each chapter is prefaced by Leif Dag Blomkvist's explanations and illuminations of the forces and energies - from early religious rituals and festivals to the art of Surrealism - which have influenced psychodrama. Psychodramatists and mental health professionals who wish to take therapy beyond the 'verbal' will find the book valuable reading.

Book excerpt: Contemporary Psychodrama weaves together psychodrama and psychoanalysis with illustrative clinical examples, whilst preserving the essence of psychodramatic philosophy and methodology. Previously unavailable in the English language, this book presents José Fonseca's diverse new approaches to psychodrama together with a blending of theories. The book is divided into clear sections, covering: * new approaches to psychodrama theory * new approaches to psychodrama technique * psychodrama and sexuality * the past and future of psychodrama. Fonseca's innovative ideas include the adaptation of techniques originally intended for groups to individual psychodramatic psychotherapy. He distinguishes between not only the normal and the mentally ill but the normal and the optimal, and presents a detailed developmental psychology, inspired by Moreno and Buber, but clearly influenced by object relations theory. Contemporary Psychodrama presents the original concepts of a leading light of the Brazilian psychodrama movement that will be of great benefit to all professionals working with psychodrama. José Fonseca, M.D., Ph.D., was one of the pioneers of the psychodramatic movement in Brazil and a founder of the Brazilian federation of psychodrama. He has published two books in Brazil, Psychodrama of Madness and Relationship Psychotherapy.

Book excerpt: Psychodrama is the first role playing method to be developed and used psychiatrically, "to heal...minds". Developed by J.L. Moreno in turn of the century Vienna, psychodrama is the parent of all role playing methods that are used to heal psychiatric ailments or "role train" desired behaviors. Any form of role play that you see used "experientially", has its roots in psychodrama. The current popularity of neuroscience and trauma research has placed psychodrama in the forefront of mind/body methods as Moreno was the first to say that "the body remembers what the mind forgets" and to identify the need to include the full person in the therapeutic milieu. He understood that if you leave the body out of therapy you are leaving significant parts of the mind out as well. Moreno is considered to be the father of group psychotherapy and is the first person to have treated people in groups, his work represents the turning point from treating people "in isolation to treating them in groups". Moreno felt that all people are fundamentally "role players" and that the "self emerges from the roles we play". Hence working with the role gives one a royal road into the psyche, so that motivations for behaviors can become more transparent and explicit. Psychodrama also provides practice in embodying, experiencing and thus training new behaviors. Psychodrama is sometimes referred to as "spontaneity training" as it develops spontaneity and creativity in those who experience it. Understanding the mind of it's creator, namely J.L. Moreno allows those who do psychodrama to use it more safely and with a greater understanding as to why they are doing what they are doing.Moreno created the triadic system of psychodrama, sociometry and group psychotherapy, all of which are introduced in this seminal work.

What a smart, swift, and thrilling novel.” —Lauren Groff, author of Florida Juliet is failing to juggle motherhood and her stalled-out dissertation on confessional poetry when her husband, Michael, informs her that he wants to leave his job and buy a sailboat. With their two kids—Sybil, age seven, and George, age two—Juliet and Michael set off for Panama, where their forty-four foot sailboat awaits them. The initial result is transformative; the marriage is given a gust of energy, Juliet emerges from her depression, and the children quickly embrace the joys of being at sea. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive guide to psychodrama, including the underlying philosophy, methodology, theory and applications. Taking readers through the process of staging a psychodrama session, from the contracting phase, exploration and enactment to closure and integration, the book also presents brief short examples to illustrate how to choose the best methodological approach for any context, and describes in detail the various psychodrama techniques and their application in practice, with indications, contraindications, typical pitfalls and FAQs. The book demonstrates that psychodrama is not merely a collection of methods and techniques and that the potential of psychodrama cannot be fully utilized without an in-depth knowledge of its conceptual foundations. With examples from a range of practices, it shows the broad applicability of psychodrama in therapeutic and non-therapeutic contexts alike, e.g. in educational contexts (school and adult education), social work, organization development, coaching and many other fields. This easy-to-read book uses jargon-free language and will appeal to psychotherapy researchers and practitioners, as well as non-therapeutic professionals like human resource consultants and life coaches. This is a translated and revised edition of the best-selling German book Psychodrama: Grundlagen (Springer, 2014, 3rd edition).

Moreno, whose creations—the best-known being psychodrama—have shaped our culture in myriad ways, many unrecognized. The record will be set straight for all time by this can’t-put-down biography, a tribute by Jonathan D. Moreno to his father’s masterly legacy.” —DANIEL GOLEMAN, author of Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ J.L. Moreno (1889-1974), the father of psychodrama, was an early critic of Sigmund Freud, wrote landmark works of Viennese expressionism, founded an experimental theater where he discovered Peter Lorre, influenced Martin Buber, and became one of the most important psychiatrists and social scientists of his time. A mystic, theater impresario and inventor in his youth, Moreno immigrated to America in 1926, where he trained famous actors, introduced group therapy, and was a forerunner of humanistic psychology. As a social reformer, he reorganized schools and prisons, and designed New Deal planned communities for workers and farmers. Moreno’s methods have been adopted by improvisational theater groups, military organizations, educators, business leaders, and trial lawyers. His studies of social networks laid the groundwork for social media like Twitter and Facebook. Featuring interviews with Clay Shirky, Gloria Steinem, and Werner Erhard, among others, original documentary research, and the author’s own perspective growing up as the son of an innovative genius, Impromptu Man is both the study of a great and largely unsung figure of the last century and an epic history, taking readers from the creative chaos of early twentieth-century Vienna to the wired world of Silicon Valley. Jonathan D. Moreno, called the “most interesting bioethicist of our time” by the American Journal of Bioethics, is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress.

This book explores the history, principles and methodology of this approach, and offers a detailed comparison with psychodrama - the original mind-body therapy - explaining how each method can enhance the other. Constellation work is based on the notion that people are connected by unseen energetic forces and suggests that the psychological, traumatic and survival experiences of our ancestors are genetically passed forward to the next generation and may live within us. Using insightful case studies from a variety of client groups, this book shows how Systemic Constellation Work can expand the possibilities of psychodrama techniques, and can be successfully integrated with psychodramatic enactment, guided imagery, ritual, concretization and other methods of healing and personal growth. This book will be essential reading for students and practitioners of psychodrama and Constellation work, as well as counselors, mental health professionals, experiential therapists, creative and expressive arts therapists and alternative practitioners looking to widen their knowledge of mind-body therapies.
