Aber psychisch Kranke haben Kinder und diese Kinder sind, (...), von der psychischen Erkrankung ihrer Mutter oder ihres Vaters in einschneidender Weise mit betroffen. Während es den Eltern und Partnern mittlerweile gelungen ist, sich Gehör zu verschaffen, ist es um die Kinder und ihr Schicksal als Angehörige lange Zeit still geblieben“ (Lenz 2005, S. 73). Doch im Laufe der letzten Jahre wurden auch besonders Kinder psychisch kranker Eltern in der psychiatrischen und psychosozialen Forschung stärker mit einbezogen. Dabei ist durch eine Reihe von Studien nachgewiesen worden, dass insbesondere bei diesen ein deutlich erhöhtes Risiko besteht, im Laufe ihrer Entwicklung mit Verhaltensauffälligkeiten zu reagieren oder selbst an einer psychischen Störung zu erkranken (vgl. ebd.). Die Auffälligkeiten der Kinder wurden vor allem in der sozial-emotionalen und seltener in der kognitiven Entwicklung deutlich. Primär waren dabei sowohl depressive als auch aggressive, dissoziale und hyperkinetische Störungen, wie z. B. Hyperaktivität, Impulsivität sowie Aufmerksamkeitsstörungen zu erkennen (vgl. ebd., S. 13). Demnach leiden nicht nur betroffene Elternteile unter ihrer Krankheit, sondern auch deren Kinder erleben diese als große emotionale Belastung. Eine psychische Erkrankung eines Elternteils wirkt sich störend auf das gesamte Familiensystem aus.

Darauffolgend befasst sich die Arbeit mit den unterschiedlichen Faktoren, die das Risiko erhöhen können, dass Kinder selbst an einer psychischen Störung erkranken und welchen Einfluss eine elterliche psychische Störung auf die kindliche Entwicklung haben kann. Sowohl das subjektive Erleben von Kindern psychisch kranker Eltern, sowie deren Wissen über die Erkrankung und die Auswirkungen auf deren Gefühlswelt und den Alltag werden beleuchtet, als auch das Erleben der Eltern über ihre eigene psychische Störung und dessen Auswirkung auf das Familienleben. Ein weiterer Teil widmet sich den unterschiedlichen Schutzfaktoren, welche die Widerstandsfähigkeit und die passenden Bewältigungsstrategien der Kinder fördern können. Anschließend werden unterschiedliche präventive und intervenierende Unterstützungsmöglichkeiten der Sozialen Arbeit in der Psychiatrie dargestellt. Hierzu werden verschiedene Aufgaben und Methoden der Sozialen Arbeit explizit aufgezeigt. Diese umfassen die Mutter- Kind-Behandlung, soziale Einzelfallhilfe, Familienberatung und -therapie, Psychoedukation und Krisenintervention. Im zweiten Teil der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die theoretisch erarbeiteten Kenntnisse durch eine empirische Untersuchung in die Praxis umgesetzt. Diese Untersuchung besteht aus zwei qualitativen Experteninterviews, deren genaue Durchführung und Ergebnisse erläutert und diskutiert werden. Die vorliegende Arbeit wird anschließend durch eine zusammenfassende Stellungnahme und einen Ausblick abgerundet.
