Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychical Research for the Plain Man Professor Henri Bergson, in his Presidential address to the Society for Psychical Research in 1913, after discussing the differences between scientific, historical and judicial certainty, stated: - "I am led to believe in telepathy, just as I believe in the defeat of the Invincible Armada. My belief is not the mathematical certainty that the demonstration of Pythagoras' theorem gives me, it is not the physical certainty that I have of the law of the fall of bodies, but it is at least all the certainty that we obtain in a historical or judicial matter." Whilst it is obvious that scientific questions, and to a lesser extent historical questions, must be left to experts; yet the ultimate decision of Guilty, or Not Guilty, in a trial for murder rest with twelve jurymen, and not with the expert judge; though the summing up of the judge is intended to instruct the jury, and influence their verdict. It has unfortunately happened in the matter of evidence for supernormal occurrences, with which is involved the hope of life after death, that the judge and the jury, the expert and the man in the street, seldom or never come into contact. For nearly forty years the Society for Psychical Research acting as judge, has been summing up in an impartial manner the evidence for and against supernormal occurrences; but the jury, the general public, knows practically nothing about either the evidence or the summing up. The general public derives its ideas either from paragraphs in newspapers, which mostly turn the whole thing into ridicule, without argument; or from books of 'ghost stories' written by people who treat the existence of beings they call 'Elementals, ' as an established fact, and mention chats with Charlotte Bronte as everyday occurrences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Borderland of Psychical Research The reason for this is very simple. The views which had separated them from ordinary interest were due to a reaction against the more ancient con ception of dreams. We are wont to suppose that men naturally distinguish between their dreams and normal experiences. This, however, is not altogether true. The ancients gave an external or objective meaning to dreams, and savages still do so, -a meaning that associates them very closely with normal experience. The causes of this may be the untu tored neglect of ordinary for supposedly significant dreams, and then the consideration of only the latter, as there is some evidence that this was the case. It matters not what the reason for it was. The fact is indisputable that to many ancient people dreams were as much testimony to external influences or meaning as were normal sensory experiences. Illu sions and hallucinations did not altogether escape the same interpretation. It is possible that the more intelligent views of these phenomena among the an cients were not recorded as were those of the igno rant and superstitious. But this does not alter the impression that we get of the natural man's ideas. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2020 Facsimile of the 1890 First Edition. "Charles Octavius Boothe was born a slave in Alabama in 1845. He learned the alphabet as a preschooler from letters stamped on a tin plate. Working as a clerk in a lawyer's office while still in his teens, he read widely and deeply. He went on to become pastor of First Colored Baptist Church in Meridian, Miss., and founding pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Ala. Many of his church members were sharecroppers or common laborers with little formal education. Boothe believed all Christians needed a solid theological foundation on which to build their understanding of God and his plan for their lives. 'The doctrines of our holy religion need to be studied in order, according to some definite system; but simplicity should prevail--simplicity of arrangement and simplicity of language, ' he said. So, he wrote a theological handbook for common Christians, Plain Theology for Plain People, first published in 1890....Boothe follows the admonition of one hymn writer who urged, 'Make the message clear and plain.' The author's theological overview is straightforward but not simplistic, concise but not condescending. He cites Scripture to support every assertion he makes. Sad to say, the "plain" language of the late 19th century may seem lofty and elevated to 21st century readers accustomed to tweets and sound bites. Even so, whether readers want to gain a perspective on theology as seen from the viewpoint of disadvantaged and marginalized people, or whether they simply seek a solidly biblical and Christ-centered introduction to systematic theology, Plain Theology for Plain People is a treasure." Baptist Standard, March 9th, 2018. Eventually retiring from his work in the 1900s, Boothe died in 1924 in Detroit, Michigan.
