Book excerpt: The Insights of Higher Awareness offers in-depth, but concise, explanations of essential spiritual truths thought to be common to all religions and spiritual paths, as well as practical guidance on spiritual growth. The book is both a combination of theory and practice, founded on the premise that the nature of spirit, and spiritual growth, are manifestations of heightened awareness, an awareness that moves beyond the ego (or ordinary self) into higher, spiritual realms. Because our ordinary awareness is greatly restricted, spiritual growth is a matter of expanding that awareness beyond its usual or everyday boundaries through a process known as dis-identification. To dis-identify with the ego is to heighten awareness, and this is the key to genuine happiness because it enables a person to overcome painful negative emotions, such as anger or hatred, and other forms of unhappiness that are the inevitable con- comitants of restricted ego-awareness. Heightened awareness not only has great practical benefits, as the way to achieving happiness and peace, but also provides an experiential means of understanding traditional spiritual problems, such as the problem of evil, and the meaning of life for human being

Book excerpt: This edited collection gathers together erudite and considered contributions from Salman Akhtar, Cobi Avshalom, Brett Clarke, Mali Mann, Gila Ofer, Thomas Ogden, Louis Rothschild, Batya Shoshani, Michael Shoshani, Naama Shoshani-Breda, Ann Smolen, Donald Spence, Richard Waugaman, Thomas Wolman, and Vamik D. Volkan. Fifteen distinguished authors bring together their vast experience as psychologists, psychiatrists, psychoanalysts, social workers, and psychotherapists to present a nuanced and in-depth investigation into the concept of truth. Divided into five parts, the book begins with a thoughtful discussion from Brett Clarke on what truth means and its role in psychoanalysis. It then moves into the realm of development, looking at truth from the viewpoint of children, adolescents, and adults. Stepping from development to culture, the works of Shakespeare, Heidegger and Freud are brought into the debate alongside the relationship of truth with individual and large-group psychology. Next come four chapters taking 'truth' into the clinical realm, grounding theory in practice. The book is brought to completion by an epilogue from Louis Rothschild answering the vital question: 'Truly, what does all this mean?' A must-read book for practising clinicians and academics in the mental health and humanities fields that investigates the wide range of theories on truth, how they have changed over the years, and their practical applications.

Book excerpt: Demonstrating a relational, dialogic way of thinking and writing, this book offers an innovative perspective on the human potential for intersubjective engagement and on the nature of true encounter. The authors engage in creative, associative dialogues and trialogues inspired by psychoanalysis and Buddhism, poetry and religion, theory and case studies, academic and free styles of writing – each enriching the other. Reflecting on the essence of relating, they convey a flow between inner, private reveries and shared ones, and between individual expressions of thought and evolvements of newly born thirds. Through this interdisciplinary, experimental setting, the authors explore the possibility to reach truths and meanings that each individual would not have achieved on their own. Offering new concepts and formulations that may nourish psychotherapists’ thought and be usefully implemented in their practice, this book presents a pressingly unique and essential viewpoint for psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists in training and in practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Studies in Philosophy represents all the published and only a few unpublished writings of Krishnachandra Bhattacharyya. These published writing date back to 1908, but his characteristic philosophical position assumes definite shape in the writings during the year 1928-36. The publications of the period outnumber and far outweigh those that fall during the previous twenty years. Of the twenty-one tracts published first in two separate Volumes, which in this edition appear as bound together in one, fourteen belong to this period, the others covering the previous years. Prof. Bhattacharyya had a deep study of ancient Indian Philosophy, particularly of Advaita Vedanta, Sankhya, Yoga and Jain Philosophies. Vol. I. contains Prof. Bhattacharyyaês constructive interpretation of these systems. He was also well-versed in classical German Philosophy, particularly that of Kant. His vast and deep study provided the intellectual background in the light of which his profoundly original mind could go on with the work of construction. He constructed a new system of his own which however is not easy to comprehend. Vol. II contains all the basic writings in which Prof. Bhattacharyyaês philosophy has been formulated. In the Introduction to this Volume, the Editor has usefully analysed the Authorês philosophical position in some details.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do psychic abilities work…and how can you tell if they’re real? In this fascinating look into the history of spiritualism, celebrity psychic Sylvia Browne tells all: what’s real, what’s not, and how to tell the difference. Starting with her own personal odyssey, Sylvia covers the history of psychics dating from biblical times and reveals the truth about everything from witches and talking boards to angels and astral projection. Did you know… -If someone tells you that an object is “haunted”…they are probably fooling you. Objects can retain impressions of prior owners, like a photograph, but they don’t contain the spirits of those on the Other Side. -If you get rid of one item in your house… it should be the talking board. Using one is like leaving your front door unlocked, inviting anyone (good or evil) to waltz right in. -Why Sylvia didn’t believe in “living ghosts”…until she had a terrifying experience that changed her mind. The phenomenon called a doppelganger happened to her more than forty years ago. -How to tell if a psychic is giving you a good reading…or just following a script. There are a few key phrases that can give away a fake. Through a wealth of personal stories and research into the lives of great psychics, Sylvia offers solid advice on how to put valid procedures to use and ignore the rest. The Truth About Psychics explains how you can spot a fraud and shows you how to tap into your own spiritualism and develop legitimate psychic skills!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite an abundance of literature on Richard Nixon, the man behind the most spectacular crash-and-burn career of modern political history has remained an enigma. What lay behind his obsessive hunger for power and control, his paranoid attacks against enemies real and perceived, his refusal to accept defeat? Why did a man who had achieved so much feel so unfulfilled even at the height of his power? And what drove the president responsible for such triumphs as the opening of relations with China to the depths of the most devastating political scandal in American history? Richard Nixon: A Psychobiography is the first thoroughgoing psychological portrait of the 37th president, drawing upon telling interviews with Nixon intimates, published and archived materials, while employing a rigorous psychoanalytic methodology. Tracing the development of Nixon's complex psyche, the authors provide new insight not only into his unconscious motivations but also into the way they influenced his political actions, whether shrewd or disastrous. The authors explore Nixon's difficult upbringing—his mean-spirited, abusive father and often-absent mother; episodic physical trauma and mental deprivation; the tragic deaths of his two brothers; his rejection by the first woman he hoped to marry; and the long pursuit of his eventual wife, Pat. Nixon emerges as a narcissistic man with an extraordinary sense of purpose, yet one who suffered from inner conflicts and self-destructive tendencies. His desire to heal difficult political conflicts and his need to punish himself continually were attempts to reconcile the crippling contradiction between a grandiose self image and an impoverished private sense of worth. Projecting his own devalued self image onto others, attempting to control and destroy them, Nixon surrendered to the excessive suspiciousness that would eventually lead to his downfall. Here are the three faces of Nixon's complex psyche—the grandiose persona, which manifested itself in bold policy moves like "The New Federalism" and the China initiative; the peacemaker, whose desire to heal internal conflicts can be seen in the policies of détente and the "Southern" desegregation strategy; and the paranoid degraded self, which struck out against those who had humiliated him and was responsible for the bombing of Cambodia and the Watergate break-in. This probing analysis makes intelligible the moments in Nixon's presidency that have provoked much speculation but few answers, from his attempt to talk to Vietnam war protesters during a pre-dawn visit to the Lincoln Memorial to his keeping of the White House tapes. A more nuanced, more humanized Nixon emerges in a book that also provides compelling evidence that the politics of a nation is subject to the unconscious needs, fears, and fantasies of its leaders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book advances an integrative approach to understanding the phenomenon of psychosocial maturation. Through a rigorous, dialectically-informed interpretation of psychoanalytic and humanistic-existential-phenomenological sources, Mufid James Hannush distils thirty essential markers of maturity. The dialectical approach is described as a process whereby lived, affect-and-value laden polar meanings are transformed, through deep insight, into complementary and integrative meta-meanings. The author demonstrates how responding to the call of maturation can be viewed as a life project that serves the ultimate purpose of living a balanced life. The book will appeal to students and scholars of human development, psychotherapy, social work, philosophy, and existential, humanistic, and phenomenological psychology.
