Book Synopsis Crossing Boundaries by : Giuseppina Marsico
Download or read book Crossing Boundaries written by Giuseppina Marsico and published by IAP. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings in the focus on the borders between different contexts that need to be crossed, in the process of education. Despite the considerable efforts of various groups of researchers all over the World, it does not seem that traditional educational psychology has succeeded in illuminating the complex issues involved in the schoolfamily relationship. From a methodological perspective, there is no satisfactory explanation of the connection between representations and actual practice in educational contexts. Crossing Boundaries is an invitation to cultural psychology of educational processes to overcome the limits of existing educational psychology. Eemphasizing social locomotion and the dynamic processes, the book try to capture the ambiguous richness of the transit from one context to another, of the symbolic perspective that accompanies the dialogue between family and school, of practices regulating the interstitial space between these different social systems. How family and school fill, occupy, circulate, avoid or strategically use this space in between? What discourses and practices saturate this Border Zone and/or cross from one side to the other? Crossing Boundaries gathers contributions with the clear aim of documenting and analysing what happens at points of contact between family culture and scholastic/educational culture from the perspective of everyday life. This book is in itself an attempt to cross the border between the "theorizing on the borders" (and how “the outside world” and “the others” are perceived from a certain point of view) and “the practices" that characterize the school-home interaction.
Book Synopsis Digital Games and Mathematics Learning by : Tom Lowrie
Download or read book Digital Games and Mathematics Learning written by Tom Lowrie and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital games offer enormous potential for learning and engagement in mathematics ideas and processes. This volume offers multidisciplinary perspectives—of educators, cognitive scientists, psychologists and sociologists—on how digital games influence the social activities and mathematical ideas of learners/gamers. Contributing authors identify opportunities for broadening current understandings of how mathematical ideas are fostered (and embedded) within digital game environments. In particular, the volume advocates for new and different ways of thinking about mathematics in our digital age—proposing that these mathematical ideas and numeracy practices are distinct from new literacies or multiliteracies. The authors acknowledge that the promise of digital games has not always been realised/fulfilled. There is emerging, and considerable, evidence to suggest that traditional discipline boundaries restrict opportunities for mathematical learning. Throughout the book, what constitutes mathematics learnings and pedagogy is contested. Multidisciplinary viewpoints are used to describe and understand the potential of digital games for learning mathematics and identify current tensions within the field. Mathematics learning is defined as being about problem solving; engagement in mathematical ideas and processes; and social engagement. The artefact, which is the game, shapes the ways in which the gamers engage with the social activity of gaming. In parallel, the book (as a te xtual artefact) will be supported by Springer’s online platform—allowing for video and digital communication (including links to relevant websites) to be used as supplementary material and establish a dynamic communication space.

Book Synopsis Implicit Measures for Social and Personality Psychology by : Laurie A Rudman
Download or read book Implicit Measures for Social and Personality Psychology written by Laurie A Rudman and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly used by behavioural and social scientists, implicit measures afford investigating core psychological constructs in ways that bypass people′s willingness and ability to report their feelings and beliefs. Focused on two primary assessment tools, evaluative priming and the Implicit Association Test, the Implicit Measures volume is designed for serious practitioners and beginning researchers alike. It provides an overview of each measure, describing its theoretical underpinnings and construct validity. Each chapter then lays out "best practices" for successfully designing each method and analyzing results, revealing how to avoid common pitfalls. The Implicit Measures volume will enable students of implicit measures to decide when and how to use them in their own research, and educate consumers of research about the accomplishments and challenges of using these state-of-the art assessment techniques. The SAGE Library in Social and Personality Psychology Methods provides students and researchers with an understanding of the methods and techniques essential to conducting cutting-edge research. Each volume within the Library explains a specific topic and has been written by an active scholar (or scholars) with expertise in that particular methodological domain. Assuming no prior knowledge of the topic, the volumes are clear and accessible for all readers. In each volume, a topic is introduced, applications are discussed, and readers are led step by step through worked examples. In addition, advice about how to interpret and prepare results for publication are presented.

Download or read book Not Playing Around written by Andrew M. Colombo-Dougovito and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-08-16 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2023 Choice Reviews Outstanding Academic Title This book provides an accessible space for interdisciplinary scholarship and narrative through an analysis of the power of media and sports, focusing on the intersectionality of identity, politics, social justice, and social movements within this context. Contributors examine how identities coalesce in sports and discuss the ways in which sports provide spaces for marginalized communities and create unique platforms that shift how society defines identity. Athletes’ identities and actions—and mass media’s representation thereof—can influence both the perceptions of society as a whole and how individuals view themselves, contributors argue. Each chapter delves into how different aspects of identity, including race, gender, disability, and sexuality, have developed and influenced social change, with a strong focus on lived experiences of both scholars and athletes from marginalized communities. Scholars of media studies, communication, sociology, and kinesiology may find this book particularly useful.
