Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Common-School System of Germany and Its Lessons to America The German common schools have long been celebrated for their efficiency and thoroughness. They have steadily improved from the time of their organization until the present, and although other nations have also improved their school systems, Germany, it is conceded, still continues in the lead. The three most important lessons, Tm taught the world by Germany are: 1, that all mpg? Teachers must be professionally trained and lessons from therefore have a professional standing; 2, that Germ' they must receive permanent appointments; and 3, that children of lawful school age must attend school every day of the year that it is in session, the parents being held accountable for such attendance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Education in Germany and in the United States This book is an attempt at contributing something toward a mutual understanding of two nations which, educationally considered, are at the head of the column of civilization. Having recently received an unmistakable warning, that human strength is not inexhaustible, I hasten to complete the book, which will preach my last sermon, unadorned but full of good will to mankind. As I did twenty years ago, I recently went to Europe to inspect schools, especially, to see what the Germans accomplished in their rural schools, and incidentally to find some educational pearls. I do not care to fill the pages of my book with laws dealing with the organization or administration of German schools, for the laws of monarchies necessarily differ from those of a republic; principles and motives under the two kinds of government are dissimilar, hence also their dissimilar laws. Nor shall I fill the book with descriptions and pictures of school buildings, for neither the organization of schools nor their architecture make the schools. "What can it help us, if we have Windsor castles as school houses, when incompetency, ignorance and inexperience preside over the school rooms!" (Supt. A. J. Rickoff). The teacher is the school; nothing can change that. It is the German teacher's professional preparation which secures his success. I am often asked: "Send me some courses of study of German schools, so that I may get a standard of comparison for our own efforts." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The System in German Schools We often hear or read of the German School System, but we must use this term advisedly and not to understand that the schools of the German Empire are under one head or authority. There are twenty - six States in the German Empire, including the free cities of Hamburg, Bremen, and Luebeck, each of which has its own system and is in no way connected officially with any other State. In fact, edu cation ln the German Empire, as in our own country, is left entirely to the individual States, yet the schools throughout the Empire are very much alike and similar in quality. There are several reasons for this. In the first place the courses in the Hoehere Schulen (secondary and College Education), are governed by the requirements of the Universities which are practically the same for the twenty-three Universities of the German Empire. The Classmal Gymnasium was the principal school until in the year 1900 when the King of Prus sia issued a decree admitting the graduates from the Reform Schools to the Universities on equal terms with those of the old Gymnasium. Since that time the growth of the Re fonm Schools, in which there is less emphasis put upon Latin and Greek or in which these subjects are made elective, has been very rapid. There is no question that the best teach ing, the most enthusiastic teachers, and the best equipment are found in the Reform Schools. There is likewise no question that the growth in these schools will increase in the future. The teachers of the Classical Schools fight the Reform Schools and insist that there is an effort made by the teachers in them to Almericanize the German Schools. In spite of this opposition, as in our own land, the people are turning more and more to these schools and are neglecting the study of the Ancient Classics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Higher Schools: The History, Organization and Methods of Secondary Education in Germany But as Prussia is the larger part of the Empire both in area and population, and by far the most important state politically in the Confederation, it is doing no great injustice to consider German schools from the Prussian standpoint. A foreign institution, however simple it appears to the casual observer, presents a wonderful complexity to the student. And the longer he studies the more complex it grows. After a six months' residence abroad I was more confident of my ability to interpret the German school system than I am now, at the end of almost five years' continuous study and investigation. No one of my readers, I am sure, can be more dissatisfied than I am myself with this attempt to portray German ideals and German methods. The subject is too important to be lightly treated and too extensive to be understood on short acquaintance. I trust, however, that my work may lighten the labours of other students in this field and prove to be of some practical worth to educators. Sermonizing on the basis of foreign customs is always of doubtful expediency. It is, indeed, questionable whether there is anything peculiar to the German theory and practice of teaching which is directly applicable to British or American conditions. Each nation must educate itself in its own way and for its own ends. The chief value of foreign examples consists in a rational understanding of the foreign way of adapting means to ends in the realization of great ideals. In this work, therefore, I have studiously resisted the temptation to point out the moral of every tale. The intelligent reader is capable of drawing his own conclusions; he who reads merely to imitate needs no encouragement. It has been my aim to make each chapter as complete in itself as possible, even at the risk of some repetition of important facts. The hope is that it will aid in a better understanding of the German school system and provide some assistance in the interpretation of German education. The German Federal Republic (deutsche Bundesrepublik) is divided into ten independent states or Laender each having its own government, parliament, and laws. The ten states are united together in the German Federal Republic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secondary School System of Germany Until recently there has been no adequate account in the English language of the secondary schools in Germany. There have been, it is true, many articles in magazines which quoted single programmes and courses of study, but there has been no general survey of the subject, and, above all, no study of the origin and progressive growth of the system. Only through a study of its origin and its development does one become able to understand the present condition of a system of education, and to predict with some degree of accuracy its future trend. It is unscientific, not to say idle and unprofitable, to summon before us an existing system and attempt to pass judgment on it without first investigating its genesis and learning the function that it fills. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Studies and Methods of Teaching in Prussian Schools The elementary schools of Prussia, which for some time have attracted, and still continue to attract, the attention of every observer of and well-wisher to education, did not attain their present superior state at once, but by degrees. The progress of their improvement was at first very slow, and almost imperceptible; but in latter times it has made rapid strides, and become obvious to every one who has directed his attention to the education of the laboring classes. Up to the year 1770, the whole system of education in Prussia was in no way superior to that adopted in England, nor was it materially of another character. The only difference which then existed referred to the grammar-schools and the universities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education in a Prussian Town This brochure reproduces a paper which was read last winter before the Dublin Education Society; and the phraseology in some respects, I fear, bears traces of its oral origin. In itself, the paper can hardly be regarded as worthy of print; but the quotations from British and German authorities, with which I have fortified and illustrated my own observations, may perhaps confer on it a vicarious usefulness. It is an attempt to picture the education in a typical German town. We have in English many treatises on German education; but the only detailed study of any city, so far as I know, is the excellent report of Mr. Andrew on the Elementary Schools of Berlin and Char-lottenburg. But the educational equipment of a capital city is necessarily "sui generis." Wiesbaden, on the other hand, may I think be regarded as educationally typical. For thus attempting to picture the education of a typical town in the paradise of education no apology (apart from the defects of the execution) is needed. It is now universally recognised that the more we know of the details of educational practice in other countries the better. From (for instance) the late Federal Conference on Education no lesson emerged more clearly than that our duty is to observe, report and compare: observe what others do, report what is observed, compare what is reported. Education can never be largely an experimental science; its observational character is world-wide. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History of Education: With a Visit to German Schools The lectures on the History of Education contained in the volume now published include the third part of the course delivered by Mr. Payne as Professor of the Science and Art of Education at the College of Preceptors. The manuscript from which these lectures were given, though altered and partly re-written during successive years, is in parts very fragmentary, and was never prepared by the author in a form suitable for publication. The obvious omissions and breaks of continuity which are certain to be found in the manuscript of a discourse intended for oral delivery, would doubtless have been filled up at the time by extemporaneous additions, and by passages read from the authors spoken of. Notwithstanding'these drawbacks, I have not thought it right to alter the text in any essential points, or to attempt to give it a completeness which could only have been given by some editor as familiar with the subject as the author. The alterations have been confined to the insertion of words or paragraphs necessary to complete the sense, and of extracts which would probably have formed part of the discourse as actually delivered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German and English Education: A Comparative Study In the following pages an attempt has been made to give in brief the organic principles of German and English education. The manner in which the two educational systems are unfolded, characterized, and contrasted will, we hope, bring home to the reader the deeper nature of education, its philosophical background, its interdependence on all departments of life, its momentous function in the national organism. In this way, the present essay may help to widen the outlook on matters educational and thus lend a shoulder as it were to that task which, according to the conclusions of the essay, is held to be one of the most urgent needs of the time, namely, the extension of the educational horizon. As the reader will soon be aware, the material condensed in the following pages could easily lend itself to ampler development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Public School System and Its Needs From the Standpoint of German Pedagogics: A Dissertation There is no national school system in the United States; each state has its own peculiar system, controls its own school affairs and attends to all education within its borders, so far as public schools are concerned. While this is true, yet there are common principles governing all the states, common ends sought for and common ends reached. In this discussion we can only consider the principles having general acceptance in all the school systems without entering into the details of each state system.
