Book excerpt: The Last 100 Yards: The Crucible of Close Combat in Large-Scale Combat Operations presents thirteen historical case studies of close combat operations from World War I through Operation Iraqi Freedom. This volume is a collection from the unique and deliberate perspective of the last 100 yards of ground combat. In today's Army, there are few leaders who have experienced multi-domain large-scale ground combat against a near-peer or peer enemy first hand. This volume serves to augment military professionals' understanding of the realities of large-scale ground combat operations through the experiences of those who lived it.

Book Synopsis Integrated Groundwater Management by : Anthony J Jakeman
Download or read book Integrated Groundwater Management written by Anthony J Jakeman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to document for the first time the dimensions and requirements of effective integrated groundwater management (IGM). Groundwater management is a formidable challenge, one that remains one of humanity’s foremost priorities. It has become a largely non-renewable resource that is overexploited in many parts of the world. In the 21st century, the issue moves from how to simply obtain the water we need to how we manage it sustainably for future generations, future economies, and future ecosystems. The focus then becomes one of understanding the drivers and current state of the groundwater resource, and restoring equilibrium to at-risk aquifers. Many interrelated dimensions, however, come to bear when trying to manage groundwater effectively. An integrated approach to groundwater necessarily involves many factors beyond the aquifer itself, such as surface water, water use, water quality, and ecohydrology. Moreover, the science by itself can only define the fundamental bounds of what is possible; effective IGM must also engage the wider community of stakeholders to develop and support policy and other socioeconomic tools needed to realize effective IGM. In order to demonstrate IGM, this book covers theory and principles, embracing: 1) an overview of the dimensions and requirements of groundwater management from an international perspective; 2) the scale of groundwater issues internationally and its links with other sectors, principally energy and climate change; 3) groundwater governance with regard to principles, instruments and institutions available for IGM; 4) biophysical constraints and the capacity and role of hydroecological and hydrogeological science including water quality concerns; and 5) necessary tools including models, data infrastructures, decision support systems and the management of uncertainty. Examples of effective, and failed, IGM are given. Throughout, the importance of the socioeconomic context that connects all effective IGM is emphasized. Taken as a whole, this work relates the many facets of effective IGM, from the catchment to global perspective.
Book Synopsis John Clements Wickham: Charles Darwin's Glorious Fellow by : Barrie Jamieson
Download or read book John Clements Wickham: Charles Darwin's Glorious Fellow written by Barrie Jamieson and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-11 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Clements Wickham RN, played an essential navigational role in three voyages of HMS Beagle, the ship on which Charles Darwin, in the second voyage, was naturalist. On the third voyage Wickham was the Commander, from 1837 until he left, ostensibly owing to ill health, in 1841. From 1842 to 1858, he played a prominent role in Brisbane affairs, as Police Magistrate and, later, Government Resident, living at Newstead House. In 1842 he married Anna, daughter of Hannibal Macarthur, who died in 1852, and he married Ellen Deering in 1857 both of whom bore children. Darwin described Wickham as a glorious fine fellow. But despite such praise, and Wickham's great contributions to the founding of Australia, as a navigator, charting and naming its coastline, and as an administrator, no biography of him has appeared apart from some valuable essays and chapters and an excellent booklet by Brian Stewart. The present work attempts to track Wickham's activities throughout his life, until his death at Biarritz in 1864. The text has been kept close to that of the chroniclers of the voyages, Phillip Parker King, Robert Fitz-Roy, Charles Darwin and John Lort Stokes, his companions on board.
Book Synopsis Architecture in the Anthropocene by : Etienne Turpin
Download or read book Architecture in the Anthropocene written by Etienne Turpin and published by Anexact. This book was released on 2013-11-25 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Research regarding the significance and consequence of anthropogenic transformations of the earth's land, oceans, biosphere and climate have demonstrated that, from a wide variety of perspectives, it is very likely that humans have initiated a new geological epoch, their own. First labeled the Anthropocene by the chemist Paul Crutzen, the consideration of the merits of the Anthropocene thesis by the International Commission on Stratigraphy and the International Union of Geological Sciences has also garnered the attention of philosophers, historians, and legal scholars, as well as an increasing number of researchers from a range of scientific backgrounds. Architecture in the Anthropocene: Encounters Among Design, Deep Time, Science and Philosophy intensifies the potential of this multidisciplinary discourse by bringing together essays, conversations, and design proposals that respond to the "geological imperative" for contemporary architecture scholarship and practice. Contributors include Nabil Ahmed, Meghan Archer, Adam Bobbette, Emily Cheng, Heather Davis, Sara Dean, Seth Denizen, Mark Dorrian, Elizabeth Grosz, Lisa Hirmer, Jane Hutton, Eleanor Kaufman, Amy Catania Kulper, Clinton Langevin, Michael C.C. Lin, Amy Norris, John Palmesino, Chester Rennie, François Roche, Ann-Sofi Rönnskog, Isabelle Stengers, Paulo Tavares, Etienne Turpin, Eyal Weizman, Jane Wolff, Guy Zimmerman."--Publisher's description.
