Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Back of the North Wind is a children's book by George MacDonald. It is a fantasy centered on a boy named Diamond and his adventures with the North Wind. Diamond is a very sweet little boy who makes joy everywhere he goes. He fights despair and gloom and brings peace to his family. One night, as he is trying to sleep, Diamond repeatedly plugs up a hole in the loft wall to stop the wind from blowing in. However, he soon finds out that this is stopping the North Wind from seeing through her window. Diamond befriends her, and North Wind lets him ride on her back, taking him on several adventures. Though the North Wind does good deeds and helps people, she also does seemingly terrible things. On one of her assignments, she must sink a ship. Yet everything she does that seems bad leads to something good. The North Wind seems to be a representation of Pain and Death working according to God's will for something good. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including W. H. Auden, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, E. Nesbit and Madeleine L'Engle. G. K. Chesterton cited The Princess and the Goblin as a book that had "made a difference to my whole existence".

Download or read book Irish Art Now written by Declan McGonagle and published by Merrell. This book was released on 1999 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Reflecting the seismic changes in Ireland's political, social, economic, and cultural realities of the 1990s, contemporary Irish artists have begun to redefine identities, raising questions about the relationships between male and female, urban and rural, North and South, history and the present. The struggle over identities, which used to marginalize Ireland and societies like it, has now become central to debates around the globe." "This strikingly illustrated book presents a reading of Irish art in the 1990s and examines the repositioning of Irish identity in works drawn primarily from the collection of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin." "The artists examined, including Kathy Prendergast, Willie Doherty, and Alice Maher, have initiated a dialogue with their own society and others beyond Ireland, using painting, photography, sculpture, video, and installation to explore subjects ranging from the personal and poetic to the political. Their concerns - and the way they are conveyed through non-traditional materials and new interpretations of more conventional media - link these works to new art being made elsewhere in the world." "This publication accompanies an exhibition touring the United States and Canada."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dublin and Edinburgh were ideally placed to become important centres of the Arts and Crafts movement and its National Romantic corollary, the Celtic Revival. This profusely illustrated volume is the first major study of Arts and Crafts design in these two great capital cities. It examines shared literary, formal and ideological links and values (strongly influenced by radical figures like Patrick Geddes, W.B. Yeats and George ëAEí Russell), as well as differences, while exploring the ambivalent relationship each city enjoyed with its native cultural heritage and with England. The text is a totally revised and expanded catalogue of the acclaimed exhibition curated by the authors for the 1985 Edinburgh International Festival. Of interest to design, social and cultural historians, the book begins with a joint introduction and two essays which place the achievements of each city within their social and cultural contexts. These are followed by substantial catalogue sections which give biographical accounts of artists, designers, architects and craftsmen and women whose range of work deserves contextual and critical re-evaluation.

Book Synopsis Redesigning the World by : Peter Stansky
Download or read book Redesigning the World written by Peter Stansky and published by Sposs. This book was released on 1996 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socialist, philosopher, and poet, William Morris (1834-1896) was at the center of the design renaissance of the 1880's, not only because of his celebrated hostility to aspects of machine culture but because of his success as a designer and businessman whose work had enormous influence on the next generation of artists, craftssmen, and designers. "A very readable and enjoyable book. It is not so much a biography of William Morris as a consideration of him as a political and esthetic phenomenon and as the founder of a number of organizations--the Century Guild, the Arts Workers Guild and the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. Mr. Stansky examines them with a learning that is never pedantic, frequently humorous and always intelligent."--New York Times Book Review. Peter Stansky is professor of history at Stanford University and the author of numerous works on British history
Download or read book (Gone) written by Robin Lydenberg and published by Boston College Museum of Art. This book was released on 2005 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the 1960's and 1970's many artists set out to democratize art by liberating their work from the confines of museums, galleries, and the marketplace, and situating it in public spaces. Since that time, site-specific art has evolved into an international phenomenon, and Dorothy Cross has emerged as one of the most compelling practitioners of this genre. Cross understands that no location is neutral, and that our sense of place is always shaped by buried histories and contemporary ideologies. Her projects create an uncertain ground on which past and present, local and global, public and private, and aesthetic and political converge. Her goal is to collaborate with and transform these sites, and to collaborate with the audience as well. Viewers find themselves physically engaged with these installations, and physically engaged at the level of anxiety, memory, and desire. Temporary art is haunted by its own ephemerality. Cross's sited works put this ephemerality on display, revealing the singular beauty of loss. With a sensuality and wit that distinguishes her site-specific work, Cross offers viewers the gift of what she calls "a bursting into beauty" that reverberates beyond each project's disappearance. The many color photographs reproduced in this volume, the artist's account of the construction process of two of the projects, and the author's detailed analysis convey the beauty and mystery of that which is GONE". -Inside front cover.
