Book excerpt: "Lawrence Otis Graham is totally original and always deft." —The Washington Post "A most timely book for managers and employees alike. Proversity affirms the U.S. motto 'E Pluribus Unum' — Out of Many, One." —Loida Nicolas Lewis Chairman and CEO TLC Beatrice International Holdings, Inc. "Graham's deep understanding of how to make companies diversity-friendly can help America replace recurring racial and gender tensions with a positive spirit of inclusion." —Rosabeth Moss Kanter Professor, Harvard Business School, and author of World Class: Thriving Locally in the Global Economy "The human resource management field is searching for a new direction to take diversity programs. Look no longer. Proversity is a giant leap forward in helping organizations embrace the most important asset of all —people."—Michael R. Losey SPHR, President and CEO Society for Human Resource Management Proversity oun 1. progressive diversity: the product of bringing together individuals who appear different, but who have many common characteristics. 2. a more advanced and progressive form of diversity planning. 3. a description of individuals who look different on the exterior, but are actually quite similar. 4. the condition of having similar characteristics on a deep level in spite of existing surface characteristics that look different. Have you ever quickly judged people at face value before really getting to know them? Does that make you racist or sexist? Have you ever been startled by a biased thought that's passed through your head? You are not alone. Nearly three-fourths of the nation's largest firms have diversity programs. But almost every day, the newspapers unearth shocking new allegations involving bias in the corporate world. Diversity-training seminars are increasingly being derided as window-dressing. Hiring and promotion quotas are under growing attack as unfair and counterproductive. When it comes to achieving true diversity in the workplace, Corporate America still has a long way to go. Frequently quoted in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and USA Today, Lawrence Otis Graham is one of our most credible authorities on how bias in the workplace hinders productivity and what managers can do about it. Now, in ProversityTM, Graham offers a new approach for transforming diversity, affirmative action, and multiculturalism in the workplace from a hindrance into a powerful competitive advantage. "Proversity" is Graham's new term for progressive diversity. While diversity focuses on what makes us different—be it race, age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion —Proversity does just the opposite: it looks for the things we all have in common. Written in the form of a business novel, Proversity chronicles the education and enlightenment of Percy McGee, an average manager in an average company, as he overcomes his bias and learns to see beyond people's differences in order to recognize their strengths. As you observe Percy's interactions with various coworkers, you are given a revealing glimpse into the subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) ways in which bias works to undermine teamwork and productivity. Proversity presents characters who embody the different forms of bias, ranging from overt bigotry (Active Bias) to self-deceptive bias (Passive Bias). By starting to recognize and eliminate his own Passive Bias, Percy McGee learns how to effectively follow the Four Steps to Becoming a Progressive Manager. Throughout the course of the story, Graham explains how to discover and apply the power of "Proversity" to everyday and long-term work situations. Along the way, Graham introduces his original, proven progressive management tools and concepts, including a checklist to help you recognize bias in yourself and others, and A Progressive Manager's 12 Commandments. Proversity is an enlightening, entertaining, thought-provoking, and extremely practical look at one of the most complex management problems facing the corporate world today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a call to action for the incoming Government in May 2015. The world is being transformed by a series of profound technological changes dominated by digital - a 'second machine age'. This is already having a significant impact on the UK; over the next two decades some economists have estimated that 35% of current jobs in the UK could become automated. Digital technology is changing all our lives, work, society and politics. It brings with it huge opportunities for the UK, but also significant risks. This demands an ambitious approach which will secure the UK's position as a digital leader. The Committee recommends that the new Government establishes a single and cohesive Digital Agenda. The potential value in doing so is significant; the Government estimated that the digital sector alone was worth an estimated £105 billion in gross value added to the UK in 2011. A report by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research in 2013, meanwhile, found that the size of the digital economy was almost double official estimates. Whatever the difficulties in quantifying the value, it is clear that digital is already a substantial driver for growth and will become much more so. Digital technology is transforming much more than just one sector of the economy - the whole economy has become digitised. It would therefore be a mistake to take the 'digital sector' as our sole focus of interest. Digital technology is pervasive across all aspects of life, so much so that the 'digital economy' is becoming synonymous with the national economy. The UK cannot afford to miss the opportunity or shirk the challenges this presents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dysfunctional organizations result from individual behavior and the cultures they develop. Many individuals have directly experienced some form of dysfunctional behavior, including trauma from nonfatal workplace violence, bullying, harassment, violence, and unsafe work practices. These and other unacceptable workplace behaviors pose significant problems in organizations. Psychological safety deals with these behaviors and prevents organizations from becoming dysfunctional. It may not be “the” way to prevent dysfunctions, but it certainly is “a” way. This book uses simple and direct words to describe forms of behavior that are obstacles to developing psychological safety. It then provides practical guidance for what can and should be done to remove those obstacles. A unique framework (V-REEL) enables a better understanding of how and why behaviors are associated with dysfunctional organizations. It indicates the value of having psychologically, psychosocially, and physically safe workplaces. Its use helps the reader to carefully identify factors that erode or chip away safe workplaces as well as factors that enable or help to create them.

Book excerpt: Managers who focus on time usually concentrate on the wrong things. Quality Time presents a new approach to achieving productivity through time management. Time itself is not what matters but rather how that time is used to achieve individual and organizational goals. Managers who get upset over employees coming to work late or socializing on the job often care more about them “putting in time” than putting their time to good use. Quality Time is for managers and others who care about everyone putting their time to good use to contribute to the value of the organization. Based on unique concepts, Quality Time offers both general and specific information and advice from an individual and a team or group point of view. It is designed so that the manager is involved first and then group or team members are engaged. Through reciprocal communication, all parties can arrive at better uses of time. While focused on managers, anyone can achieve productivity from the use of the unique framework and assessments. Quality Time is different from other time-management books. Most are focused solely on the individual. Quality Time is intended to serve individuals but also workgroups or teams. Quality Time is readable. It uses straightforward language to involve the reader. It makes learning easier and enjoyable by making the material realistic and interesting. The material is up-to-date and accurate as well. Praise for Quality Time "I own a one employee company. Reading Quality Time enlightened me. It was not a difficult read and full of useful concepts, many I have never considered. We have all been taught, ‘plan your work, work your plan.’ Dr. David Van Fleet's book keeps me focused on better ways to use time wisely to create a better plan." Steve Nemeth Realtor Broker "The framework and assessments in the book should be valuable to any organization." Todd LaPorte CEO of HonorHealth Scottsdale "Teamwork is a fact of life in organizations and the struggle to make teams use time more effectively is another ongoing fact of life. This book is a broadly comprehensive and immediately applicable look at the ways we can make team’s use of time better. The novel use of the V-REEL® Framework to focus the efforts to improve team time is both insightful and helpful. My hearty applause is offered to David Van Fleet's unique perspective that will serve to improve team interactions and performance through the use of quality time.” G. David Flint, Co-founder of Value Creation Company and author of Think Beyond Value - Building Strategy to Win "Having completed the first-time management program offered by Time Systems, Inc. in 1980, I was keen to discover what David Van Fleet would offer to add to those earlier ideas and refine recommended practices that were previously known. Professor Van Fleet has offered here some wonderful time management tips, but even more importantly, he has demonstrated how to move from personal goal setting to managing team time, more readily achieving institutional goals. In particular, his idea of developing a means-end-staircase for a team is a significant contribution toward the management of time expended toward organizational goals. It necessarily includes consideration of the individual goals of each team member and should be highly motivating to everyone on the team. David has also addressed the necessary process of managing both the positive and negative effects of stress on employee performance. This book goes a long way toward explaining how to implement the principles in my own book." Richard N. Morrison, Author, Activate Human Capital
