Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as the biblical book of Proverbs reveals the wisdom of an ancient king of Israel who dedicated himself to Jehovah in his youth, so too this book presents the wit and wisdom of a modern school teacher and church leader who committed himself to Christ at the age of seven. Compiled, arranged, and edited by Ralph Vile's eldest son, John, this book contains some 2,500 of Ralph's aphorisms from a fifty-year period, arranged under more than 200 topics covering the range of practical and spiritual living. A unique mix of universal truths and deeply held personal opinions from a man with a good sense of humor who loves both rhymes and paradoxical word plays, this book will amuse, challenge, and inspire general readers as it provides insights, illustrations, and reflections for pastors and speakers. RALPH VILE has spent most of his life in Luray, Virginia in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Born in Colonial Beach, Virginia and committing his life to God at the age of seven, Ralph served in the U.S. Navy and attended college where he met his wife Joanna. After brief service on the mission field in Costa Rica, the couple returned with their growing family to Virginia. There they began teaching in public schools as they raised five children and two grandchildren; furthered their educations; and served God through music, teaching, and in other leadership capacities at the Mt. Carmel Regular Baptist Church. Ralph has been writing poems, some of which have been collected in Xulon's We Are His Poets (the first volume of Valley Verses) and Let the Bells Ring Out on Christmas Morning, and proverbs for more than fifty years.

Book excerpt: The Middle English lyric is intimately related to late medieval preaching, not only because many lyrical poems have been preserved in sermon manuscripts, but also because preaching furnished a unique opportunity to create and utilize poems. Preachers, Poets, and the Early English Lyric explores this relationship in detail. Originally published in 1986. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late seventies until 1996, while I was involved in Bible teaching and building for the church and church school, the Lord was putting poetry in my mind, often nearly a complete poem in rhyme and verse and almost always exhortative in nature?that is, dealing with the Christian view as opposed to world's and considering how we should live as Christians. I would write the words on pages of a tablet as the thoughts manifested and perhaps share them with the pastor or friends as the occasion arrived. Later?sometimes years later?I would read or hear a Bible passage that seemed to fit the poetic thought that was given, and I would write and index it with the poem. The author's notes following the Bible verses were generated from the thought that the poem seemed to invoke. After I procured a computer, the task of organization was completed and produced this final anthology, with the exception of the last poem, which was written after seeing the movie The Passion of Christ.

Book excerpt: These books of the Bible, despite their differences, all treat the phenomenon of what it means to live wisely before God. In this readable commentary, Ellen Davis points out that the writers of these books considered wisdom--and the fruits of wisdom, a well-ordered life and a peaceful mind--to be within the grasp of anyone wholeheartedly desiring it. Books in the Westminster Bible Companion series assist laity in their study of the Bible as a guide to Christian faith and practice. Each volume explains the biblical book in its original historical context and explores its significance for faithful living today. These books are ideal for individual study and for Bible study classes and groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of satirical poems homes in on the inconsistencies and downright perversities of what passes in our culture as "Holy Writ." Turning to satire, with its long and distinguished record of exposing folly and bringing enlightenment through humor, the author leaves no doubt that primitive religion posing as eternal truth is just the sort of folly that satire is meant to correct. He lets his poetic imagination roam widely, as he takes on the roles of Eve, Noah, Sarah, Jonah, David, Mary, Jesus, Judas, and even the biblical Jehovah Himself, ("I never apologize, never explain."). We also hear from priests, televangelists, and faith healers, as well as some sensible contemporaries, commenting on what it means to live a life of reason. At the conclusion to the introduction, the author says: "Intelligent and well-meaning people have argued for centuries against the fatal attraction of foolishness, but their efforts have been largely unproductive, partly because many people seem impervious to rational discussion. So perhaps satire is our most effective way of lighting candles in the darkness and communicating effectively to those who are immune to reason. That is, at any rate, the hope, and the rationale, of this book." In this age of suicide bombers and resurgent fundamentalism, we need these lighted candles like never before.

Book excerpt: With the tragic and heroic actions that took the life of his son, Pastor Randy was given by God a gift to express his grief, his theology, and his walk with God. Randy Junker, a pastor with the Christian and Missionary Alliance, has served for over thirty-five years in three churches. He now pastors the Grand Rapids Alliance Church in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, where he lives with his wife, Debbie. They have raised four children, each one married, and have gifted the Junkers with seventeen grandchildren. Randy graduated from Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota, with a BA in history and earned his MDiv from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. With his love of words, especially the words in the Word of God, he has blessed his congregation by his poetry. They have also endured his puns, which are always intended, for over twenty-five years. In June of 2009, his oldest son, Nathan, drowned while saving the life of a youth in his youth group when a mighty wind blew the student off a sandbar. This book of poetry is dedicated to his memory.

Book excerpt: It is tempting for preachers in this digital age of plurality and diversity to offer quick sound bites and PowerPoint-style presentations. These tend to invite a yes or no response, as in mathematical equations. But if we are to reach Christians across the theological spectrumandinvite non-Christians to seriously consider our faith, we must take a different approach. What is needed is greater attention to poetry and images meant to communicate the beauty of the faith and the wonder and mystery of God in everyday life. We must communicate the unity of our message of faith, the divine as truth, and justice and healing as expressions of God. Preaching as poetry (theopoetic preaching) allows for the bold imagery of scripture and the gentle invitation of art. Sermons can no longer always be neatly tied up, perfectly linear, with complete answers to every question. In Preaching as Poetry Paul Scott Wilson teaches why this new approach is necessary today, and demonstrates with multiple examples how it works in real sermons. He skillfully guides the reader to incorporate the classical values of beauty, goodness and truth in every sermon, and in ways that connect with congregants and listeners today.
