Book Synopsis Reconstructing Environmental Governance by : Rick Reibstein
Download or read book Reconstructing Environmental Governance written by Rick Reibstein and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental law can be made preventive and efficient, and it can enlist willing compliance before using the punishing hand, creating a constructive relationship between the governing and the governed. The “adversarial” relationship for which environmental regulation is famous is appropriate for those unwilling to comply, but not appropriate for the many well-meaning regulated entities. This book explains how these, and other principles of reformed environmental law have been demonstrated successfully but the lessons of success have not been learned. The approach of the book is to collate examples of environmental governance, policy-making and ethics and demonstrate paths towards a more progressive environmental and climate agenda.
Book Synopsis Searching for the profit in pollution prevention case studies in the corporate evaluation of environmental opportunities by : James Boyd
Download or read book Searching for the profit in pollution prevention case studies in the corporate evaluation of environmental opportunities written by James Boyd and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of pollution prevention, or "P2," signifies a new, proactive environmental mindset that targets the causes, rather than the consequences, of polluting activity. While anecdotal evidence suggests that P2 opportunities exist and that many have been pursued, there is also the perception that the pace of P2 is far too slow. To explore that claim -- and to shed light on barriers to P2 innovation -- this paper presents case studies of industrial P2 projects that were in some way unsuccessful. Economic, financial, and accounting analysis is used to assess the rationale for, and soundness of, these corporate decisions. While based on a very limited sample, the evidence contradicts the view that firms suffer from organizational weaknesses that make them unable to appreciate the financial benefits of P2 investments. Instead, the projects foundered because of significant unresolved technical difficulties, marketing challenges, and regulatory barriers. Based on evidence from the cases, the paper concludes with a discussion of environmental policy reforms likely to promote P2 innovation.

Book Synopsis Profit Centers in Industrial Ecology by : Ronald S. Smith
Download or read book Profit Centers in Industrial Ecology written by Ronald S. Smith and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1998-10-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complying with environmental protection laws need not punch a hole in a firm's bottom line. Smith shows that compliance can be profitable. He provides corporate executives with easily accessed data and analyses of the theory of environmental management systems (EMS), and in doing so covers the major environmental concerns worrying corporate America. The result is a practical guide to the tools of environmental management and how they can be used to enhance a corporation's profitability while at the same time reducing its impact on the environment and consequent financial liabilities. Readers will find ways to tailor an appropriate strategy to their specific business needs, justify that strategy financially, and integrate the EMS into an existing business plan. Smith takes the reader through all of the environmental factors that affect profits and productivity. He demonstrates the practicality of not only considering the life cycle of a single product or service, but also the impact of life cycles throughout the entire company. A degree in environmental science is not needed to follow Smith's reasoning and advice, but solid business knowledge ^Iis^R important. Smith provides all of the background needed to start an EMS program, the benefits of which are limited only by management's priorities and the creativity of a company's people.

The underlying assumption is that waste is a manageable resource, and can therefore be turned into profit when managed appropriately.
