Book excerpt: Here, for the first time, is the private and most intimate correspondence of one of America's most influential and incisive journalists--Hunter S. Thompson. In letters to a Who's Who of luminaries from Norman Mailer to Charles Kuralt, Tom Wolfe to Lyndon Johnson, William Styron to Joan Baez--not to mention his mother, the NRA, and a chain of newspaper editors--Thompson vividly catches the tenor of the times in 1960s America and channels it all through his own razor-sharp perspective. Passionate in their admiration, merciless in their scorn, and never anything less than fascinating, the dispatches of The Proud Highway offer an unprecedented and penetrating gaze into the evolution of the most outrageous raconteur/provocateur ever to assault a typewriter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three men in uniform. Three spunky ladies. Three fairy tale-themed happily ever afters. 1. My Little Rock Airman Jessie: As a strange silence settles in the car, I find myself increasingly unsettled by the man beside me. Which is stupid. Derrick torments me for half of our relationship and spends the other half begging me to help him avoid his boss. Besides, I don't date airmen. So why do I feel like I'm just now meeting him for the first time? And why does it suddenly feel like maybe...maybe it's time to rethink my dating rules after all? Derrick: It has to be the uniform. Women are weird about uniforms. It's just something I wear every day. It has function and utility. Usually, when Jessie sees me, she meets me with a scowl. But today, she doesn't look annoyed. She looks...intrigued. And though that would have concerned me two months ago, now I can't help but think that I like it. 2. My Carolina Airman Alexander: Once upon a time, Carly smiled a lot. Even in her pain now, I can see hints of that girl I loved so much. She was smart, adventurous, and had the snarkiest sense of humor. And, based on the way she nearly grinned at me earlier, I can only guess...or hope, rather, that all of that is still inside. As I leave the base to head to the nearest pharmacy, a plan begins to form. It's perfect, really. I could nurse Carly back to health. She’d get insurance. She’d be independent of her relatives’ care, and I could spend the rest of our lives making up for my mistakes. My heart begins to hammer in my chest, and with each passing second, I can see it unfolding perfectly in my head. The only problem will be convincing Carly. Saying she can be stubborn is like saying winter is chilly. But I can be stubborn, too. Especially when it comes to the girl I love. Carly: I don’t know what I expected from the kiss, but it wasn’t this. My eyes are closed, but colors flash behind my eyelids like fireworks. In this kiss, I see glimpses of two kids who fell in love and all the dreams they’d painted in those bright Carolina sunsets. Then he's gone. I open my eyes in confusion to see him pulling back as the crowd bursts into cheers and whistles. “I present Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Calero,” the judge announces. Alexander's eyes smolder as they meet mine, and we both know something has changed. If only I knew what it is. This is supposed to be a fake marriage, just a way to get me the medical care I need until Grandpa comes back. So why does kissing Alexander feel like waking up? 3. My Las Vegas Airman Chris: I play life safe. Order, determination, and hard work serve me well, and I'm about to take the next step toward my dream: becoming an Air Force officer. Unfortunately, the experimental officer training program I've been accepted to is at a university in Las Vegas. Even worse, the college student I've been assigned as a “university guide” might be charming and adorable, but she’s also the most scatterbrained person I've ever had the misfortune of working with. The more I get to know misadventurous, bubbly Skylar, however, the more I realize that there might be more than my strict adherence to rules on the line. I might be in danger of losing my heart. Skylar: I don't mean to get into scrapes. But thanks to my unfortunate...tendencies, I'm about to flunk out of one of my foundational hospitality courses. So when I'm offered the chance to earn extra credit by helping a new student for a semester, I jump. I quickly realize, however, that Sergeant Chris Brooking, while absurdly handsome, is one of the biggest squares I've ever met. In my attempt to unlock his secrets, however, I end up discovering my own truths that I’d rather not face. So when the broody airman offers to help, I must decide whether I can bear to let him see the insecurities I try so hard to hide...or push him away forever.

Book excerpt: Using humor and frank candor, author Bacil Donovan Warren shares his personal experience, as well as that of his fellow tankers, as part of the US Army's 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment (the "Brave Rifles") in Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Warren recounts the initial shock of hearing about Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and his Regiment's preparation for deployment during Operation Desert Shield. He describes the stress and sometimes mind-numbing boredom of being deployed deep in the desert of Saudi Arabia, constantly preparing for a possible Iraqi invasion. He recalls the terrifying experience of the start of the air war of Operation Desert Storm and the workmanlike action during combat against Iraq's Republican Guard forces during Operation Desert Sabre. With It or in It brings clarity and focus to their unceasing efforts to bring the conflict to a swift and decisive end. Finally, Warren describes the triumphant return of the Brave Rifles to Ft. Bliss, Texas, and the waiting arms of their families and loved ones.

How am I going to survive? …I try to keep from screaming, “Dennis, you can’t do this to me now. I left my family, my friends, my job, pulled the kids away from their school and friends—you can’t quit on us. You can’t.” Through clenched teeth, he controls his response, “Scott, I’m tired. I’m dying.” Dennis is walking away and does not sound tired; he sounds angry. “Have you not heard anything I’ve told you for the last twenty-three years? I love you; you are my life. Don’t you dare think I’m not dying here, too. You may be the one who gets buried, but I’m the one who has to figure out how to keep living. I’m dying, Dennis; I’m dying with you.” We stand there, energy spent, emotionally depleted, tears falling. I take him in my arms, and we hold on to each other as if we draw life’s breath from the other—because we do. He sits on the sofa, and I go find the Dallas phone book so I can call Restland, the place where we will bury his body. When Joan Scott Curtis was 43 years old, she found out her husband was dying of AIDS. He had been infected for thirteen years. She tested negative. None of this was possible. It was the mid 1990s. All the prejudices about AIDS are not supposed to exist anymore, but they do. Just Keep Breathing is the remarkable story about finding courage in small victories, on taking solace in helping others, and knowing that even though the major battle will be lost, the ability to live on with grace and dignity is what defines the war.

Book excerpt: Bestselling author Monica Murphy winds up her sensational series with this sexy story of two college kids with nothing in common but a bunch of baggage and a burning attraction. Over. That about sums up everything in my life. Suspended from my college football team and forced to cut back my hours at The District bar because of my crappy grades, I can’t keep turning to my sister, Fable, and her pro-football playing husband, Drew, to bail me out. I just can’t seem to find my own way. Weed and sex are irresistible temptations—and it’s messed up that I secretly hand over money to our junkie mom. A tutor is the last thing I want right now—until I get a look at her. Chelsea is not my type at all. She’s smart and totally shy. I’m pretty sure she’s even a virgin. But when she gives me the once over with those piercing blue eyes, I’m really over. But in a different way. I won’t deny her ass is killer, but it’s her brain and the way she seems to crave love—like no one’s ever given her any—that make me want her more than any girl I’ve ever met. But what would someone as seemingly together as her ever see in a screwed up guy like me? Praise for Four Years Later “Another great entry into the series and a perfect way to close out what started with One Week Girlfriend. As always, Monica Murphy gives us such great characters, giving them such depth and emotions that it’s hard not to love them from the minute you meet them on the page.”—Cocktails and Books “An engaging, heavily character-driven new adult [novel] that brings us the story of a much beloved character. Seamless writing flows effortlessly as Murphy sets up the plot elements and begins her story of love, loss, redemption, and forgiveness. . . . Four Years Later was a delight to read.”—Smexy Books “Monica Murphy has created an unforgettable series. Her writing is honest, gritty, romantic and entertaining. Her characters are very real people that readers can relate to. We embrace them in our hearts. Their lives and stories will stay with [us] long after the book is finished. It is no wonder that this series is an all-time favorite. . . . The One Week Girlfriend series has been an amazing reading journey that has touched my heart.”—Hesperia Loves Books “Emotional and gratifying . . . This romance was full of tension and longing! . . . Monica Murphy has another win with Four Years Later. Owen and Chelsea’s story was touching and passionate, and is sure to make you sigh in contentment by the end.”—Waves of Fiction “What a fantastic ending to an amazing series! . . . It took my emotions on a roller coaster ride but hey, all the good books do! . . . Four books and I still want more! I’m not quite sure I could ever get enough of these characters. They’re all complex, and beautifully broken in their own ways. Combine that with Monica Murphy’s fantastic writing skills and you always have a winner.”—Down the Rabbit Hole “It’s official! When it comes to NA romances and inner monologues, Monica Murphy is a queen! . . . I highly recommend Four Years Later! If you read the earlier books then you just have to get this one too. It was wonderful to see how the earlier couples are faring . . . but Monica Murphy had truly made this Owen’s book. I love it!”—In My Room Reading

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950 took the American military by surprise. Rushing to respond, the US and its allies developed a selective overflight program to gather intelligence. Silent Warriors, Incredible Courage is a history of the Cold War overflights of the Soviet Union, its allies, and the People's Republic of China, based on extensive interviews with dozens of pilots who flew these dangerous missions. In 1954 the number of flights expanded, and the highly classified SENSINT program was born. Soon, American RB-45C, RB-47E/H, RF-100s, and various versions of the RB-57 were in the air on an almost constant basis, providing the president and military leadership with hard facts about enemy capabilities and intentions. Eventually the SENSINT program was replaced by the high-flying U-2 spy plane. The U-2 overflights removed the mysteries of Soviet military power. These flights remained active until 1960 when a U-2 was shot down by Russian missiles, leading to the end of the program. Shortly thereafter planes were replaced by spy satellites. The overflights were so highly classified that no one, planner or participant, was allowed to talk about them—and no one did, until the overflight program and its pictorial record was declassified in the 1990s. Through extensive research of existing literature on the overflights and interviews conducted by Wolfgang W. E. Samuel, this book reveals the story of the entire overflight program through the eyes of the pilots and crew who flew the planes. Samuel's account tells the stories of American heroes who risked their lives—and sometimes lost them—to protect their country.
