O presente trabalho discute a democratização da educação e a promoção da igualdade racial na escola com a Lei no 10.639/03; contextualiza o campo de pesquisa, posicionando a dinâmica da escola, os sujeitos, as estratégias de mobilização e as ações na implementação da Lei. A pesquisa de campo, com aporte bibliográfico, documental e empírico foi desenvolvida sob a perspectiva qualitativa, por meio de observação e entrevistas com educadoras da escola e monitores de uma ação de educação das relações étnico-raciais (ERER). Para análise do processo de implementação da Lei no 10.639/03, no contexto escolar, foram investigadas as representações dos educadores sobre as relações raciais na escola e na sociedade, a discriminação racial manifestada na escola, o conhecimento e as representações dos educadores sobre a lei pesquisada, o Projeto Político Pedagógico (PPP), o currículo, a formação inicial e continuada dos educadores, os materiais didático-pedagógicos, a resistência de parte dos educadores, finalizando com as possibilidades e desafios para a implementação da Lei. Considerou-se, finalmente, que a falta de políticas públicas comprometidas com a ERER, condições de trabalho e de precariedade dessa escola pública, expressas na falta de material didático, na ausência de formação continuada, entre outras, combinada com a resistência de parte dos educadores e alunos, configuram-se como os maiores entraves para a implementação da Lei. Portanto, não se trata, em face destes desafios, de perder de vista as tensões que já se colocavam no mundo da escola em relação aos conhecimentos e relações raciais que permeavam o desenvolvimento do currículo. A experiência com a ERER da escola pesquisada expressa a mobilização de ações curriculares significativas, ainda que o processo de implementação não esteja sedimentado, efetivando-se numa dinâmica de avanços e retrocessos.
