Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about using the best evidence to inform treatmentdecisions for people with cancer. It is written by oncologists foroncologists, using examples throughout to illustrate key points. The book starts off with a "toolbox" section, written in a waywhich will help those relatively new to the principles ofevidence-based oncology to understand the key issues, and equipthem with the basics of how to tell a good study from a bad one.The majority of the book then deals with an evidence-based summaryof the common and important cancers in a structured and easy toread format around common patient scenarios and frequently askedquestions. Whilst most of the evidence is based on randomisedcontrolled trials, other studies are cited where appropriate egwhen discussing adverse events. The unique accompanying bookwebsite will contain updates of new chapters and studies as theybecome available. Written by leading world figures in the evidence-basedmovement Includes free CD-ROM with PC eBook and sample PDA chapter Methodology of reviewing and appraising evidence discussed inthe context of cancer management Clinical sections covering prevention and screening Chapters on treatment of the individual major cancers reviewthe current best available evidence to most frequently askedquestions Rigorously structured explicit searches, evidence of efficacyand harms, plus comment around clinical scenarios Free-access update website keeping the text current and live:www.evidbasedoncology.com

Book excerpt: This insightful volume opens new horizons for exploring modern therapeutic entities and emerging targets for combating the deadly disease of cancer. The authors provide a review of cancer along with descriptions of its molecular level mechanisms and emphasize the role of promising new therapies, including herbal therapies, that can be utilized for the treatment of metastatic diseases. The chapters look at specific approaches that have been researched and developed and that have almost reached the standardization stage, such as intracellular mechanisms, particularly phosphoprotein-enriched astrocytes and transthyretin proteins; CXCR4; autophagy-inhibiting drugs; spatiotemporal genetic analysis; tyrosine kinase inhibitors; and more. Also considered are advances in diagnostic systems like intra vital microscopy and molecular imaging.
Book Synopsis Quality Assurance Programme for Computed Tomography by : International Atomic Energy Agency
Download or read book Quality Assurance Programme for Computed Tomography written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents a harmonized approach to quality assurance in the field of computed tomography applied to both diagnostics and therapy. It gives a careful analysis of the principles and specific instructions that can be used for a quality assurance programme for optimal performance and reduced patient dose in diagnostic radiology. In some cases, radiotherapy programmes are making a transition from 2-D to 3-D radiotherapy, a complex process which critically depends on accurate treatment planning. In this respect, the authors also provide detailed information about the elements needed for quality assurance testing, including those relating to accurate patient characterization as needed for radiotherapy treatment planning.
Book Synopsis The Radiological Accident in Soreq by : International Atomic Energy Agency
Download or read book The Radiological Accident in Soreq written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 21 June 1990 a fatal radiological accident occurred at an industrial irradiation facility at Soreq, Israel. An operator entered the irradiation room by circumventing safety systems and was acutely exposed, with an estimated whole body dose of 10-20 Gy. The accident, like earlier accidents at similar irradiators, was the consequence of the contravention of operating procedures. An IAEA review team investigated the causes of the accident. This report presents its findings and recommendations and describes the clinical management of the patient, particularly of the haematological phase. The medical treatment included the use of emerging therapies with haematopoietic growth factor drugs which may rescue the overexposed patient, albeit in this case only temporarily. The report is intended for regulatory authorities responsible for the regulation and inspection of irradiators, operating organizations and physicians who may need to treat overexposed patients.
Book Synopsis Biological Dosimetry by : W. G. Eisert
Download or read book Biological Dosimetry written by W. G. Eisert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1982, a small international symposium was held at the Gesellschaft fUr Strahlen- und Umweltforschung mbH (GSF) in Munich as a satellite meeting of the IX International Conference on Analytical Cytology. The symposium focussed on cytometric approaches to biological dosimetry, and was, to the best of our knowledge, the first meeting on this subject ever held. There was strong encouragement from the 75 attendees and from others to publish a proceedings of the symposium. Hence this book, containing 30 of the 36 presentations, has been assembled. Dosimetry, the accurate and systematic determination of doses, usually refers to grams of substance administered or rads of ionization or some such measure of exposure of a patient, a victim or an experimental system. The term also can be used to describe the quantity of an ultimate, active agent as delivered to the appropriate target material within a biological system. Thus, for mutagens, one can speak of DNA dosimetry, meaning the number of adducts produced in the DNA of target cells such as bone-mar row stem cells or spermatogonia.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Bibliometric Indicators by : Roberto Todeschini
Download or read book Handbook of Bibliometric Indicators written by Roberto Todeschini and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At last, the first systematic guide to the growing jungle of citation indices and other bibliometric indicators. Written with the aim of providing a complete and unbiased overview of all available statistical measures for scientific productivity, the core of this reference is an alphabetical dictionary of indices and other algorithms used to evaluate the importance and impact of researchers and their institutions. In 150 major articles, the authors describe all indices in strictly mathematical terms without passing judgement on their relative merit. From widely used measures, such as the journal impact factor or the h-index, to highly specialized indices, all indicators currently in use in the sciences and humanities are described, and their application explained. The introductory section and the appendix contain a wealth of valuable supporting information on data sources, tools and techniques for bibliometric and scientometric analysis - for individual researchers as well as their funders and publishers.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Safety Report is a compilation of detailed information on the processes and materials associated with the phosphate industry and on the radiological considerations that need to be taken into account by the regulatory body when determining the nature and extent of radiation protection measures. It has been developed as part of the IAEA's programme on the application of its safety standards in the field of radiation, transport and waste safety. The information provided will assist in the implementation of a graded approach to regulation, in terms of which the application of the requirements of the safety standards is commensurate with the characteristics of the practice or source and with the magnitude and likelihood of the exposures. The publication also provides information on expected radionuclide concentrations, exposure levels and the most appropriate regulatory approach in the phosphate industry and covers the mining and beneficiation of phosphate ore, phosphoric acid production, phosphogypsum, and the manufacture and use of phosphatic fertilizers among others.
