Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the strength of laws addressing four types of violence against women--rape, marital rape, domestic violence, and sexual harassment--in 196 countries from 2007 to 2010. It analyzes why these laws exist in some places and not others, and why they are stronger or weaker in places where they do exist. The authors have compiled original data that allow them to test various hypotheses related to whether international law drives the enactment of domestic legal protections. They also examine the ways in which these legal protections are related to economic, political, and social institutions, and how transnational society affects the presence and strength of these laws. The original data produced for this book make a major contribution to comparisons and analyses of gender violence and law worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection addresses intimate partner violence, risk and security as global issues. Although intimate partner violence, risk and security are intimately connected they are rarely considered in tandem in the context of global security. Yet, intimate partner violence causes widespread physical, sexual and/or psychological harm. It is the most common type of violence against women internationally and is estimated to affect 30 per cent of women worldwide. Intimate partner violence has received significant attention in recent years, animating political debate, policy and law reform as well as scholarly attention. In bringing together a range of international experts, this edited collection challenges status quo understandings of risk and questions how we can reposition the risk of IPV, and particularly the risk of IPH, as a critical site of global and national security. It brings together contributions from a range of disciplines and international jurisdictions, including from Australia and New Zealand, United Kingdom, Europe, United States, North America, Brazil and South Africa. The contributions here urge us to think about perpetrators in more nuanced and sophisticated ways with chapters pointing to the structural and social factors that facilitate and sustain violence against women and IPV. Contributors point out that states not only exacerbate the structural conditions producing the risks of violence, but directly coerce and control women as both citizens and non-citizens. States too should be understood as collaborators and facilitators of intimate partner violence. Effective action against intimate partner violence requires sustained responses at the global, state and local levels to end gender inequality. Critical to this end are environmental issues, poverty and the divisions, often along ‘race’ and ethnic lines, underpinning other dimensions of social and economic inequality.

Book excerpt: A health-care provider is likely to be the first professional contact for survivors of intimate partner violence or sexual assault. Evidence suggests that women who have been subjected to violence seek health care more often than non-abused women, even if they do not disclose the associated violence. They also identify health-care providers as the professionals they would most trust with disclosure of abuse. These guidelines are an unprecedented effort to equip healthcare providers with evidence-based guidance as to how to respond to intimate partner violence and sexual violence against women. They also provide advice for policy makers, encouraging better coordination and funding of services, and greater attention to responding to sexual violence and partner violence within training programmes for health care providers. The guidelines are based on systematic reviews of the evidence, and cover: 1. identification and clinical care for intimate partner violence 2. clinical care for sexual assault 3. training relating to intimate partner violence and sexual assault against women 4. policy and programmatic approaches to delivering services 5. mandatory reporting of intimate partner violence. The guidelines aim to raise awareness of violence against women among health-care providers and policy-makers, so that they better understand the need for an appropriate health-sector response. They provide standards that can form the basis for national guidelines, and for integrating these issues into health-care provider education.

Book excerpt: This book presents a variety of socio-legal perspectives on issues of domestic violence and abuse. Focussing on contemporary research and practice developments in policing, law, statutory and voluntary sectors, the contributors to this volume cover a vast spectrum of initiatives and professional expertise concerned variably with protection, prevention and intervention priorities. The challenges of “joined up” thinking across these perspectives are apparent as the varied definitions, underpinning ideologies, terminologies, the profile of the victim/survivor’s voice and identified gaps in service provision appearing in this book illustrate. As a reflection on the current economic climate, some of the perspectives presented necessarily compete rather than complement each other, an issue the volume highlights and addresses. Achieving a broader understanding of these issues and insights into a range of activity in this context is vital for both the practitioner and academic alike, whatever their perspective./div

Book excerpt: Explore methods and techniques that health care providers can use to treat battered women?more humanely and effectively! This vital book examines the role of health care in the struggle to combat domestic violence. It shows how physicians can?and should?respond to victims of domestic violence, shares the success of the Family Violence Prevention Project, discusses what healthcare providers need to know about elder abuse, examines primary care physicians? screening practices for female partner abuse, and looks at the way Emergency Department personnel perceive the results of intimate partner violence (IPV). It also shows how family planning clinics can become ?empowerment zones? of battered women living in a rural setting and assesses the success of the WomanKind Program?an integrated model of 24-hour health care response to domestic violence against women. Domestic Violence and Health Care: Policies and Prevention also: investigates the relationship between perceived barriers and screening practices explores attitudes toward mandatory domestic violence reporting inquires into what pregnant women who have been abused think about their partners and their relationships examines the difference between Mexican and American women?s perception of the severity of various acts of abuse discusses the efficacy of an IPV assessment form using icons rather than descriptions to better communicate with migrant/seasonal workers whose command of English is poor From the editors: ?We have learned that screening for domestic violence by itself is a powerful intervention and can make a significant difference in a woman?s life. It helps validate that there is no excuse for domestic violence and demystifies the belief that providers are a part of the problem and not part of the solution. We have also learned that the consequences of intimate partner violence are manifested in a range of health conditions as well as in increased overall costly health care utilization. Screening tools and proposed mechanisms for treatment and follow-up are available. The next step in this effort requires validation of the screening tools and evaluation of the interventions currently underway. The purpose of this book is to provide some insight into our current understanding of the role health care plays in recognizing and treating victims of domestic violence. We hope to contribute to the understanding of the complexities of the causes and consequences of domestic violence on the life of a woman, and to provide insight into ways to positively alter the health care system and provider behavior.?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book explores how women from diverse backgrounds interact with the law in response to intimate partner violence, over time. Every year, millions of women globally turn to law to help them live lives free and safe from violence. Women engage with child protection services and police. They apply for civil protection orders and family court orders to help them manage their children's contact with a violent father, and take special visa pathways to avoid deportation following separation from an abuser. Women are often compelled to interact with law, through their abuser's myriad legal applications against them. While separation may seem like a solution, it often accelerates legal engagement providing new opportunities for continued abuse. Countless women who have experienced Intimate Partner Violence are enmeshed in overlapping, complex and often inconsistent legal processes. They have both fleeting and longer-term connections with legal system actors. Their stories demonstrate how abusers harness multiple aspects of the legal process, and its actors, to continue their abuse. They highlight the regular failure of legal processes and actors to comprehend the significance of non-physical abuse. Women show how legal system actors' common expectation that separation is a single event, rather than a process, has implications for their connections with law and the outcomes they achieve. From time to time, the women in this study attained the safety and closure they sought from law, sometimes in circular and unexpected ways, but their narratives demonstrate the level of endurance, tenacity and time this often required"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically examines domestic violence law in India. It focuses on women’s experiences and perspectives as victims and litigants, with regard to accessibility to law and justice. It also reflects on the manner in which the legal process reproduces gender hierarchies. This volume: Analyzes the legal framework from a gender perspective to pinpoint the inherent stereotypes, prejudices and discriminatory practices that come into play while interpreting the law; Includes in-depth interviews and case studies, and explores critical themes such as marriage, rights, family, violence, property and the state; Presents alternatives beyond the domain of law, such as qualitative medical care and legal aid facilities, shelter homes, short-stay homes, childcare facilities, and economic and social security provisions to survivors and their children. Drawing on extensive testimonies and ethnographic studies situated in a theoretical framework of law, this book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of law, gender, human rights, women’s studies, sociology and social anthropology, and South Asian studies.

Book excerpt: Extrait de la couverture : "Debunking the myths about domestic violence - in defence of battered women who kill : *why do men abuse?, *why don't abused women leave them?, *why do some women kill?, *and why they qualify for legal defence? The Justice for Women Campaign was initiated in 1998 by the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation. As its name suggests, the campaign seeks to promote the just and equitable treatments of battered women who have killed their abusive partners. The Campaign has three main goals : reforming legal defences to murder and sentencing guidelines ; establishing a review mechanism to allow for the early release of women who have killed abusive partners ; and providing legal and support services to women assisted by the Campaign."
