Book excerpt: A low-cost method for galvanic cathodic protection of reinforcing steel in concrete was examined. In this method, arc-sprayed zinc is deposited on the external concrete surface of steel-reinforced marine substructure bridge components, which are normally subject to corrosion of the reinforcement as a result of chloride ion contamination of the concrete. The concrete cover of corrosion-damaged substructure components is removed, exposing the reinforcing steel. After sandblasting, the zinc is arc-sprayed over the exposed steel and surrounding concrete, creating a 1/2 mm thick galvanic anode, which is in electronic contact with the steel and in electrolytic contact with the water in the concrete pores. In this investigation, the ability of the system to deliver protective current was examined by experiments in the laboratory and at field installations at bridges in the Florida Keys.

These include in-depth inspection, fatigue analysis, design of mitigation measures and construction to avert component deterioration. Several incidents of in-service and under construction bridge failures have recently taken place. These dramatic failures emphasize the importance of risk-based inspections and analysis of real-life data to evaluate reliability of bridges. To effectuate benefits of reliability analysis in bridge maintenance, work on theoretical reliability must be equipped with practical analytical tools. Such an approach must underscore risk elements and identify processes to manage risk and avoid unexpected outcomes of failures and service disruption of bridges. The devastating earthquakes of February 6, 2023, in the southern region of Turkey near the northern border of Syria, which claimed tens of thousands of lives, caused enormous structural damage and staggering economic losses. These seismic events brought to focus on the vitality of instilling infrastructure routes that must accommodate emergency management plans to integrate the influx of medical and rescue response teams. The safe operation of bridges along these routes is indispensable for mobilization and deployment of rescue teams, medical personnel, humanitarian assistance, and the supply of food and water. The reliability of access routes and bridges is defined by their ability to adequately function as planned to effectuate emergency management plans, in the event of a similar seismic event, anywhere in the world. Risk-Based Strategies for Bridge Maintenance contains selected papers presented at the 11th New York City Bridge Conference (New York City, USA, 21-22 August 2023), and discusses issues of reliability, risk assessment, management, maintenance, inspection, monitoring, design, preservation, and rehabilitation of bridges. The book is aimed at bridge engineers.

Book excerpt: This is the final report in a study to investigate the feasibility of using galvanic cathodic protection (CP) of reinforced concrete bridge members using sacrificial anodes attached by conductive adhesives. Three field trials were installed and monitored under this contract. About 1000 sq ft (93 sq m) of zinc/hydrogel was installed on the pilings, pile caps, and double-tee beams of a fishing pier in Ft. Pierce, Florida. Although electrical contact was disrupted on one of the beams, most of the system performed well and met the 100 mV potential decay criterion after 32 months of operation. Zinc/hydrogel anodes installed on the bearing pads of V-piers of the Long Key Bridge also performed well, generally meeting accepted CP criteria. A more recent installation of 700 sq ft (65 sq m) on the Cape Perpetua half-viaduct in Oregon has performed well for 1 year, providing about 0.3 mA/sq ft (3.2 mA/sq m) and easily achieving CP criteria. The zinc/hydrogel anode was easy to install, fix and has performed generally well for all three trials conducted under this contract.

Anode/steel couples were placed in simulated concrete environments consisting of sealed containers filled with silica sand treated with a mixed alkali-chloride solution. Measurements of current flow, circuit resistance, potential, and depolarization were made over a period of 18 weeks. Based on results obtained, aluminum and zinc anodes were found to hold the most promise for use as galvanic anodes in reinforced concrete bridge decks. A series of reinforced concrete test slabs were produced for evaluation of the candidate materials. Normal-weight structural concrete, structural lightweight concrete, free-draining concrete, and free-draining latex-modified concrete overlays were placed over the anodes to serve as riding surfaces. Performance of the cathodic protection (CP) systems was evaluated using current flow and depolarization techniques.

Galvanic CP systems have recognized advantages of simplicity and the potential to operate with little or no maintenance for the life of the system. But galvanic systems have been used relatively little. Applications have so far been limited to the seawater splash and tidal zone where concrete is moist and most conductive, and where the anode surface is periodically wetted. In this study, a new galvanic CP system is being investigated in which sacrificial anodes are attached to the concrete surface with ionically conductive adhesives called hydrogels.
