Book excerpt: The importance of respecting donor intent is frequently mentioned in discussions of philanthropic practice, but often misinterpreted or given only lip service. Wise donors, though, know that energetically guarding their gifts and their mission is the only way to ensure the integrity and effectiveness of personal giving. This comprehensive, easy-to-read book outlines-with a clarity and authority never before achieved-all of the vital steps need to protect your giving legacy. It carefully avoids one-size-fits-all solutions, addresses the central matters in depth, and incorporates the wisdom of scores of donors, foundation leaders, and consultants who generously share their experiences, from horror stories to triumphs. No matter where you are in your philanthropic journey, you can take steps to avoid losing control of your charitable gifts. And you must. As this thorough and practical book demonstrates, there is a high likelihood of bitter disappointment if you don't act to enshrine your philathropic principles in careful codes, staff choices, governance rules, and management procedures. Study this guide to make sure the fruits of your hard work and generosity actually go to the causes you hold dear.

This increasingly important but relatively unknown subject involves what happens to all of your accounts, social media, emails, photos, and documents and how you will be remembered in your online afterlife. This book will let you take control of your online afterlife and ensure that your important digital assets are treated according to your wishes. Given that the average person spends close to seven hours per day online it's a must-read for everyone.Death: of course it's not an easy subject for any of us. Indeed, there are few subjects more difficult to discuss or imagine than death. It's like we'd rather talk about anything else than the one universal experience we all share. But it's now one that also needs to be addressed in the digital age. Digital Legacy: Take Control Of Your Online Afterlife provides both the context of how we got here but also the right guidance to move forward with your planning today. Book excerpt: Almost without realizing it, we have shifted toward an all-digital culture. Future heirlooms like family photos, home movies, and personal letters now exist only in digital form, and in many cases they are stored using popular services like Flickr, YouTube, and Gmail. These digital possessions form a rich collection that chronicles our lives and connects us to each other. But have you considered what will happen to your treasured digital possessions when you die? Unfortunately the answer isn’t as certain as we might presume. There are numerous legal, cultural, and technical issues that could prevent access to these assets, and if you don’t take steps to make them available to your heirs, your digital legacy could be lost forever. Written by the creators of TheDigitalBeyond.com, this book helps you secure your valuable digital assets for your loved ones and perhaps posterity. Whether you’re the casual email user or the hyper-connected digital dweller, you’ll come away with peace of mind knowing that your digital heirlooms won’t be lost in the shuffle. “Death is the final frontier of cyberspace—and this book provides a road map to the key issues, problems and future prospects for bridging this ultimate transition with dignity, security and grace.” — Daniel “Dazza” Greenwood, Executive Director of the eCitizen Foundation “To be ahead of one’s time usually means stepping to the side of one’s time in order to see it clearly. This book does just that, putting our digital lives and afterlives into sharp focus. Fascinating.” — David Eagleman, neuroscientist and author

The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom is the first personal finance book that gives you not only the knowledge of how to handle money, but also the will to break through all the barriers that hold you back. Combining real-life recommendations with the motivation to overcome financial anxieties, Suze Orman offers the keys to providing for yourself and your family, including: * seeing how your past holds the key to your financial future * facing your fears and creating new truths * trusting yourself more than you trust others * being open to receiving all that you are meant to have * understanding the lessons of the money cycle The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom is useful advice and inspiration from the leading voice in personal finance. As Orman shows, managing money is far more than a matter of balancing your checkbook or picking the right investments. It's about redefining financial freedom -- and realizing that you are worth far more than your money.

Book excerpt: My Uncle Caleb I was just five or six years old. The last memory I have of him at our house was the only time I remember him with two legs. After that, we got news he had been shot by a man he thought was a friend. Shot at close range through his knee and half of his left thigh. Gangrene set in and took a long time to heal. He was in the hospital for quite some time. Dad brought him to our home with one leg and a crutch. He had to carry him across the high river to keep his cast and crutch dry. For the next few years we kids, who were older, helped take care of him. We would take the train to stay with him and Grandma for two or three weeks at a time. We would work the fields and river banks. Uncle couldn't get a job, so he started his own business making fishnets to sell to neighbors and keep himself busy. He would set traps in the winter to capture animals for skins and sell them to a Louisville fur company. Sometimes I would go to the woods with him. Those woods were full of all kinds of fur creatures. Uncle would tell me how he owned land up on the mountain, and one day he was going to cut trees from his property and have a houseboat made from the wood. Many years passed. I lived in Ohio and would take trips to visit my hometown when I could. I had heard Uncle Caleb had built his houseboat, so on one trip, I ventured to find Uncle Caleb's houseboat nestled under the river bridge. Boy, was he surprised when I knocked on his door. We had a wonderful visit--my last one. Later I went to his funeral on the mountain, where the trees that made his home were cut from. I am so glad I got that unplanned wonderful visit.

Book excerpt: What does the Bible really say about money? About wealth? How much does God expect you to give to others? How does wealth affect your friendships, marriage, and children? How much is “enough”? There’s a lot of bad information in our culture today about wealth―and the wealthy. Worse, there’s a growing backlash in America against our most successful citizens, but why? To many, wealth is seen as the natural result of hard work and wise money management. To others, wealth is viewed as the ultimate, inexcusable sin. This has left many godly men and women confused about what to do with the resources God’s put in their care. They were able to build wealth using God’s ways of handling money, but then they are left feeling guilty about it. Is this what God had in mind?

Book excerpt: Why do some people age so "gracefully"? They're the people whose lives seem to fall into place easily as they age. Their physical needs are met, they have plenty of resources with which to enjoy their "golden years"...and when they pass, their children and heirs manage what's "left behind" with seemingly instinctive skill and grace. But we also know far too many people in the opposite place: facing physical needs that overwhelm them, financial obligations that necessitate selling off personal possessions or even their very homes, and stress from children and heirs arguing about "who's going to get what" even before they're gone. How to have the first in your life, and not the second? It all comes down to a plan. The Law of Aging is chock-full of information designed to help you take the important first (and subsequent) steps toward making that plan...and implementing it to suit your needs, your family situations, and your future. With this as your road map and guidebook, you'll be well on your way to that "graceful" aging-and priceless peace of mind-we all want.
