Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of literature on convective heat and mass transfer through porous media has brought both engineering and fundamental knowledge to a new state of completeness and depth. Additionally, several new questions of fundamental merit have arisen in several areas which bear direct relation to further advancement of basic knowledge and applications in this field. For example, the growth of fundamental heat transfer data and correlations for engineering use for saturated media has now reached the point where the relations for heat transfer coefficients and flow parameters are known well enough for design purposes. Multiple flow field regimes in natural convection have been identified in several important enclosure geometries. New questions have arisen on the nature of equations being used in theoretical studies, i. e. , the Validity of Darcy assumption is being brought into question; Wall effects in high and low velocity flow fields have been found to play a role in predicting transport coefficients; The formulation of transport problems in fractured media are being investigated as both an extension of those in a homogeneous medium and for application in engineering systems in geologic media and problems on saturated media are being addressed to determine their proper formulation and solution. The long standing problem of how to adequately formulate and solve problems of multi-phase heat and mass transfer in heterogeneous media is important in the technologies of chemical reactor engineering and enhanced oil recovery.
Book Synopsis Thermal Diffusivity Measurements on Metals and Ceramics at High Temperatures by : R. L. Rudkin
Download or read book Thermal Diffusivity Measurements on Metals and Ceramics at High Temperatures written by R. L. Rudkin and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory flash method of measuring thermal diffusivity has been extended to ceramics at high temperatures. Several problems encountered in applying this technique to ceramics are discussed: namely, heating the samples to a uniform temperature over the sample face; overcoming the transparency of the specimens to the radiation from the xenon flash lamp; and correcting for radiation heat losses from low thermal conductivity ceramic specimens at higher temperatures. Measurements of the thermal diffusivity of the following mate rials are reported up to the temperatures indi cated: Pyroceram No. 9606 (1160 C), Pyroceram No. 9608 (1210 C), Pyroceram No. 9690 (1150 C), beryllium oxide (1780 C), aluminum oxide (four types) (1730 C), magnesium oxide (two types) (1370 C) and two spinels (1630 C). Heat capacity data have been obtained on Pyroceram No. 9608 be tween room temperature and 650 C. (Author).
Book Synopsis An Unsteady-state Method for Measuring Thermal Diffusivity at High Temperatures by : Herman S. Levine
Download or read book An Unsteady-state Method for Measuring Thermal Diffusivity at High Temperatures written by Herman S. Levine and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unsteady-state method for measuring thermal diffusivity at high temperatures was developed in which experimental heating curves are compared with the simplified solution of the heat conduction problem for various bodies. This method is based on a radiation boundary condition. The thermal diffusivity of refractory oxides measured by this method at 1400° C compares favorably with reported values. The apparatus used was a modification of standard laboratory equipment. Experimental procedures were simple and results were obtained rapidly.

Book Synopsis Thermophysical Properties of Materials by : G. Grimvall
Download or read book Thermophysical Properties of Materials written by G. Grimvall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-09-22 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a thoroughly revised version of the original book published in 1986. About half of the contents of the previous version remain essentially unchanged, and one quarter has been rewritten and updated. The rest consists of completely new and extended material. Recent research has focussed on new materials made through "molecular engineering", and computational materials science through ab initio electron structure calculations. Another trend is the ever growing interdisciplinary aspect of both basic and applied materials science. There is an obvious need for reviews that link well established results to the modern approaches. One purpose of this book is to provide such an overview in a specific field of materials science, namely thermophysical phenomena that are intimately connected with the lattice vibrations of solids. This includes, e.g., elastic properties and electrical and thermal transport. Furthermore, this book attempts to present the results in such a form that the reader can clearly see their domain of applicability, for instance if and how they depend on crystal structure, defects, applied pressure, crystal anisotropy etc. The level and presentation is such that the results can be immediately used in research. Graduate students in condensed matter physics, metallurgy, inorganic chemistry or geophysical materials will benefit from this book as will theoretical physicists and scientists in industrial research laboratories.
Book Synopsis Temperature Diffusivity and Thermal Conductivity of Metals at High Temperatures by : O. A. Kraev
Download or read book Temperature Diffusivity and Thermal Conductivity of Metals at High Temperatures written by O. A. Kraev and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The steady and nonsteady state methods of the determination of thermal diffusivity are reviewed. A new method for measuring the thermal diffusivity of metals at high temperatures is based on the study of temperature waves in a flat specimen. The heating and formation of temperature oscillations are induced by electron bombardment and the temperature is measured at one point using a photocell. (Author).
