Download or read book Song Walking written by Angela Impey and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Song Walking explores the politics of land, its position in memories, and its foundation in changing land-use practices in western Maputaland, a borderland region situated at the juncture of South Africa, Mozambique, and Swaziland. Angela Impey investigates contrasting accounts of this little-known geopolitical triangle, offsetting textual histories with the memories of a group of elderly women whose songs and everyday practices narrativize a century of borderland dynamics. Drawing evidence from women’s walking songs (amaculo manihamba)—once performed while traversing vast distances to the accompaniment of the European mouth-harp (isitweletwele)—she uncovers the manifold impacts of internationally-driven transboundary environmental conservation on land, livelihoods, and local senses of place. This book links ethnomusicological research to larger themes of international development, environmental conservation, gender, and local economic access to resources. By demonstrating that development processes are essentially cultural processes and revealing how music fits within this frame, Song Walking testifies to the affective, spatial, and economic dimensions of place, while contributing to a more inclusive and culturally apposite alignment between land and environmental policies and local needs and practices.

Book Synopsis Biological and Cultural Diversity by : Gordon Prain
Download or read book Biological and Cultural Diversity written by Gordon Prain and published by Intermediate Technology Publications. This book was released on 1999 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much recent 'scientific' agricultural research has failed to build upon the valuable experiences and lessons learnt from farmers, in combating problems faced in agriculture. Biological and Cultural Diversity presents, for the first time, cases of indigenous experimentation as well as the benefits in terms of rural development of new partnerships between farmers and formal research. Development workers, agricultural researchers and others concerned about rural poverty, agricultural sustainability and local resource management will find this book highly relevant and of value to their work. Strategic Environmental Assessment and Land Use Planning covers not only how much such SEAs are carried out and in what context, but whether they are effective and why. It provides invaluable insights for practitioners and researchers in this rapidy evolving field' Riki Therivel, author of Strategic Environmental Assessment in Action Strategic Environmental Assessment and Land Use Planning provides an authoritative, international evaluation of the SEA of land use plans. The editors place the SEA of land use plans in context, and uniquely qualified contributors then evaluate systems in Canada, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States and the World Bank. These chapters provide a description of the context in each country, a case study of the use of SEA in land use planning and an evaluation of each SEA system against a set of generic criteria specially designed to anlayse different aspects of SEA. The contributors critically review each SEA system, SEA process and SEA outcome, and conclude by summarizing their findings. The editors draw the various national perspectives together in a final chapter and derive widely applicable conclusions about SEA and land use planning. This book is a core text for all students in environmental assessment, land use planning, environmental science, environmental management, development studies, geography, landscape design and law and engineering. It is also essential reading for all governments and environmental regulators, academics, researchers and environmental and planning consultants worldwide who are involvedin SEA research, practice and training.
Book Synopsis Indigenous Forests and Woodlands in South Africa by : Michael John Lawes
Download or read book Indigenous Forests and Woodlands in South Africa written by Michael John Lawes and published by University of Kwazulu Natal Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a defining synthesis of the use and socio-economic value of timber and non-timber resources from indigenous forests and woodlands in South Africa. It provides an up-to-date review of current research and thinking on policies and practices affecting these two biomes. Since 1994, there has been a paradigm shift in the approach to the management of forest and woodland resources, with a move away from former "preservationist" policies and an increased emphasis on the sustainable extractive use of natural resources, particularly by rural communities. A growing recognition of the potential value that these resources hold for local economies and livelihoods has been accompanied by the restructuring of national institutions governing forests and woodlands, and a number of new policies for integrated management.
