The purpose of this review was to update the article from the Cochran Systematic Review titled Prophylactic mastectomy for the prevention of breast cancer originally from Lostumbo et al., last updated in 2008. Our goal was to establish whether prophylactic mastectomy increases survival in women who have either had breast cancer in one breast, or who have had no breast cancer yet show a high risk profile. Studies to update the current topic were mostly observation and cohort by design. Conclusions to show what benefits prophylactic mastectomy may provide where obtained by summarizing and comparing the outcome of each study. Strong and significant findings support prophylactic mastectomy in reducing breast cancer incidence and mortality. This statement comes with limitations and biases to be considered, mostly that there was a lack of random control trials due to ethical reasons and the short length of participant follow up data. The conclusion to this update favors prophylactic mastectomies in the prevention of breast cancer.
