This book was released on 2003 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American historian of modern Europe and Germany McClelland warns that he is offering a social rather than traditional art history, and approaches artists as social beings not isolated geniuses. He limits his study to visual artists in Germany only because his original plan proved too grand, but hopes readers can generalize to artists in other fields, elsewhere in Europe, and across the Atlantic. Utah and Mormon history are entwined, as so many early followers of the faith settled the region beginning in 1847. They preserved their values and heritage in the numerous temples, forts, tabernacles and cemeteries that serve as historic sacred monuments for the modern church. Author and LDS member Andy Weeks explores the history behind the landmarks that exalt the rich, deeply rooted history of Mormonism in the Beehive State.

Book Synopsis Prophets and Paupers by : Harland Edwin Hogue
Download or read book Prophets and Paupers written by Harland Edwin Hogue and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Within a few years it is estimated that at least 200,000 men and women from the American Midwest, South and East, and also from Australia, China, Europe, North Africa and both Central and South America rushed for the Mother Lode. As part of this process Roman Catholic, Mormon, Jewish and Protestant communities sent vigorous leadership to the California gold mines." "Nothing like this vast migration from so many nations and cultures had ever taken place in the history of the world, especially into one small geographical area. And nothing like it has happened since. At the same time the religious world was in the process of sending out missionaries to the ends of the earth. Dr. Hogue shows us that the religious communities at their best left a legacy of integrity and hope in the midst of one of the most disheartening and often crass periods of American Western history. In this thrilling story, Dr. Hogue carefully and interestingly elucidates a story full of surprises, heartaches, and failures, but also full of robust and persistent courage of both men and women of faith."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Ahad Ha'am Elusive Prophet by : Steven J Zipperstein
Download or read book Ahad Ha'am Elusive Prophet written by Steven J Zipperstein and published by Halban Publishers. This book was released on 2012-08-27 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An incisive biography of the guiding intellectual presence - and chief internal critic - of Zionism, during the movement's formative years between the 1880s and the 1920s. Ahad Ha'am ('One of the People') was the pen name of Asher Ginzberg (1856-1927), a Russian Jew whose life intersected nearly every important trend and current in contemporary Jewry. His influence extended to figures as varied as the scholar of mysticism Gershom Scholem, the Hebrew poet Hayyim Nahman Bialik, and the historian Simon Dubnow. Theodor Herzl may have been the political leader of the Zionist movement, but Ahad Ha'am exerted a rare, perhaps unequalled, authority within Jewish culture through his writings. Ahad Ha'am was a Hebrew essayist of extraordinary knowledge and skill, a public intellectual who spoke with refreshing (and also, according to many, exasperating) candour on every controversial issue of the day. He was the first Zionist to call attention to the issue of Palestinian Arabs. He was a critic of the use of aggression as a tool in advancing Jewish nationalism and a foe of clericalism in Jewish public life. His analysis of the prehistory of Israeli political culture was incisive and prescient. Steven J. Zipperstein offers all those interested in contemporary Jewry, in Zionism, and in the ambiguities of modern nationalism a wide-ranging, perceptive reassessment of Ahad Ha'am's life against the back-drop of his contentious political world. This influential figure comes to life in a penetrating and engaging examination of his relations with his father, with Herzl, and with his devotees and opponents alike. Zipperstein explores the tensions of a man continually torn between sublimation and self-revelation, between detachment and deep commitment to his people, between irony and lyricism, between the inspiration of his study and the excitement of the streets. As a Zionist intellectual, Ahad Ha'am rejected both xenophobia and assimilation, seeking for the Jews a usable past and a plausible future.
Book Synopsis Walking in the Prophetic and the Fear of the Lord by : Ricki Goral
Download or read book Walking in the Prophetic and the Fear of the Lord written by Ricki Goral and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not for spiritual sissies. It is not for the fainthearted. It is also not intended in any way to condemn or frighten anyone, but it is intended to set a fire in the midst of the modern church and call the children of God back to holiness and purity and the fear of the Lord. It is time to prepare our wedding garments. Revelation tells us that we are the ones who prepare our own garments.Revelation 19:7; "Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready."If you truly have a call of God on your life, you will very often find yourself in circumstances not only not of your own making, but also circumstances which are not in any way pleasant or comfortable. They are circumstances you never would have chosen for yourself. Yet, here you are and you are in the right square in the midst of them!God has a way of preparing His own to bring them to a place of humility. In this process He creates servants who have learned to be yielded, obedient and trustworthy.Psalm 24:3-5; Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? And who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood And has not sworn deceitfully. He shall receive a blessing from the Lord And righteousness from the God of his salvation.Don't you think it's time?

Book Synopsis The Two Great Prophets by : Reverend Elkan V. Kemp
Download or read book The Two Great Prophets written by Reverend Elkan V. Kemp and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-01-19 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was his survival of a near fatal head-on collision in 1940 that turned Elkan Kemps life around. After crossing the threshold of death twice while hospitalized, he gained a new perspective on life and on death, as well. During his six years in the Air Corps, he met his dream-girl while at Pearl Harbor, and they were married. Elkan Kemp began his college education in 1946 at the University of Iowa. There he obtained both a BA and an MA degree, with majors in Sociology and Religion. It was during this time that his interests included in-depth studies of the Old Testament under Rabbi Judah Goldin. He studied religion under Dr. Marcus Bach and Theology under several Jesuit priests. He learned five dialects in Greek and received honors in Phi Eta Sigma, Eta Sigma Phi and Phi Beta Kappa. Reverend Kemps religious studies at the University of Iowa led him to three years of graduate work at the San Francisco Theological Seminary which included research in Greek and advanced Hebrew. He also went on to earn a divinity degree and a Seminary Fellowship for study at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. His experience at the University of Edinburgh led him to more advanced work in Hebrew and extensive studies of the Muslim religion. With a Ph.D. thesis entitled, Life, Death and What Comes After, Elkan Kemps education now led him to his lifelong devotion to pastoral work. After teaching from the Bible for more than 60 years, Reverend Kemp became aware of just how many thinking people have been frustrated by the walls of religious myth, legend, creed and dogma that the churches and synagogues have erected. His decision to write this book came out of a desire to ease those frustrations by helping people to break down those walls. There was a practical side to his effort. He sat with many deeply religious laymen and ministers who came to that event we call death, with great anxiety. Reverend Kemp believes that it is evident that the Judaeo-Christian religion is not working, for those walls require a hand-me-down religion and this does not work. Reverend Kemp states, We truly believe only what we know about our God first hand. I hope, with this book, people will be able to find that experience and to have a full life, and then come to death with a firm, happy confidence . . . not just a vague hope.

Download or read book The Prophet written by Isaac Deutscher and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 1019 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few political figures of the twentieth century have aroused such intensities of fierce admiration and reactionary fear as Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky. His extraordinary life and extensive writings have left an indelible mark on the revolutionary consciousness. Yet there was once a danger that his life and influence would be relegated to the footnotes of history. Published over the course of ten years, beginning in 1954, Deutscher's magisterial three-volume biography turned back the tide of Stalin's propaganda, and has since been praised by everyone from Tony Blair to Graham Greene. In this definitive work, now reissued in a single volume, Trotsky's true stature emerges as the most heroic, and ultimately tragic, character of the Russian Revolution.
