Book excerpt: Thirty years have passed since Cornel West's book Race Matters rose to the top of the bestseller lists in 1993. Yet his book remains as relevant as ever to American culture--even more so, if one considers its influence on contemporary racial justice movements such as Black Lives Matter, prison justice, and the fight for police reform. Prophetic Leadership and Visionary Hope, an edited volume of essays by leading scholars in Black studies, religious studies, and social justice history, looks back to the original 1993 text and forward into the future of racial understanding and healing in our current century, responding to Dr. West's own repeated insistence that we can only understand our present and future by looking back. By reengaging with West's book at this seminal moment, Prophetic Leadership and Visionary Hope offers new points of entry into the thorny issues that the 1993 text addressed: the challenge of leadership in a culture marked by the legacy of white supremacy; the limited value of liberal affirmative action programs in promoting the affirmation of Black humanity; the dangerous seductions of African American conservatism and the question of Black self-regard (what West called "black nihilism"); the necessity and difficulty of cross-race solidarity and cross-religious affinity; the need to channel legitimate Black rage over untenable conditions of existence into productive opportunities and viewpoints. All of these issues are even more marked in American society today. The voices collected in this volume are the legitimate intellectual heirs of the original Race Matters. With essays that span the topics of history, politics, philosophy, religion, cultural studies, music, and aesthetics, Prophetic Leadership and Visionary Hope is as wide-ranging as the thinker whose ideas it engages, interrogates, and celebrates. Book excerpt: This book seeks to address both the bewilderment and desire for prophetic visionary leadership in the contemporary church by a discussion of two significant revivals of the 1600s: the English Nonconformist Quakers and the Protestant French Huguenots. How can prophetic vision be incorporated successfully into the ministry of the church? Campbell argues that the mission of the apostle, evangelist, pastor and teacher is to be prophetically inspired and led in every way by the union of the Word, the Person of Jesus Christ, and the Person of the Holy Spirit. - Publisher

Book excerpt: Every so often a new book breaks the mold and helps to highlight the intersection between seemingly divergent aspects of the national conversation. The Prince, the Priests & the Prophets is such a book. Originally inspired by the acquittal of George Zimmerman, this book examines the interplay between the American president, American religious institutions and American prophetic voices that have resulted in continued struggles with racial injustice. With the language of both social science and sermon, public theologian Kyle J. Boyer argues that "we need prophets," and that "the prophetic voice has been diluted for some time." As it did with Barack Obama, America has often mistakenly looked to the president for prophetic leadership, not realizing that the prince can never be the prophet. Though prophets have often arisen from the church, the American church itself is in need of prophetic challenge. Thought-provoking and inspiring, The Prince, the Priests & the Prophets challenges America to find its prophets, elevate their voices, and ultimately, listen to them.

Book excerpt: Rarely does a book come along with a renewed understanding on the way certain issues are treated especially the Churchs response to HIV/AIDS. Other books talk about the social, economic issues in relation to HIV/AIDS, but this book goes further to show the theological basis of the churchs response. With evidence from the history of the main line churches, Mageto exposes the suppressed views within the mission churches on the HIV/AIDS. The book opens up yet another way of understanding the churchs response to HIV/AIDS so far and shows new ways of looking at the pandemic in particular those who are infected and affected.

Book excerpt: An unflinching look at nineteenth- and twentieth-century African American leaders and their visionary legacies. In an accessible, conversational format, Cornel West, with distinguished scholar Christa Buschendorf, provides a fresh perspective on six revolutionary African American leaders: Frederick Douglass, W. E. B. Du Bois, Martin Luther King Jr., Ella Baker, Malcolm X, and Ida B. Wells. In dialogue with Buschendorf, West examines the impact of these men and women on their own eras and across the decades. He not only rediscovers the integrity and commitment within these passionate advocates but also their fault lines. West, in these illuminating conversations with the German scholar and thinker Christa Buschendorf, describes Douglass as a complex man who is both “the towering Black freedom fighter of the nineteenth century” and a product of his time who lost sight of the fight for civil rights after the emancipation. He calls Du Bois “undeniably the most important Black intellectual of the twentieth century” and explores the more radical aspects of his thinking in order to understand his uncompromising critique of the United States, which has been omitted from the American collective memory. West argues that our selective memory has sanitized and even “Santaclausified” Martin Luther King Jr., rendering him less radical, and has marginalized Ella Baker, who embodies the grassroots organizing of the civil rights movement. The controversial Malcolm X, who is often seen as a proponent of reverse racism, hatred, and violence, has been demonized in a false opposition with King, while the appeal of his rhetoric and sincerity to students has been sidelined. Ida B. Wells, West argues, shares Malcolm X’s radical spirit and fearless speech, but has “often become the victim of public amnesia.” By providing new insights that humanize all of these well-known figures, in the engrossing dialogue with Buschendorf, and in his insightful introduction and powerful closing essay, Cornel West takes an important step in rekindling the Black prophetic fire.

Because of this, prophets are not being equipped, activated or launched into their prophetic assignment. Consequently, they are sitting in the pews of America's churches and dying on the vine, which has strewn across the religious landscape a plethora of prophetic orphans that need recovery and restoration. The Body of Christ is in desperate need of a battalion of credible and trained prophets that can counteract the tsunami of moral decay that is sweeping across the globe. This book is dedicated to the 21st-century prophets, dreamers, prophetic scribes and seers to help them understand the power and purpose of their prophetic calling. It will equip them to effectively walk out their assignment and take their rightful place in the Kingdom of God and in history. Furthermore, readers will be galvanized to overcome the pain of rejection, the crippling affects of abandonment, Childhood trauma, recover from grief and loss, heal from church wounds and frustrate the plans of witches in the workplace. The author's mandate is to help prophets excel in the marketplace, marriage and ministry. STUDY GUIDE

Book excerpt: There are many books about the prophetic and what it means to be a prophet but few, if any, about practical living. The Ephesians 4 gifts distributed by Jesus are functions in the Body of Christ, not titles. Therefore, we must manage these functions effectively in order to facilitate and be a blessing to the Body of Christ. The majority of the questions we have received regarding the prophetic life are centered on everyday living and healing. So, as a prophet, how do you live effectively so that God can be glorified and people can be helped? We will answer some of the common issues that prophets deal with, such as who to marry, why the prophetic ministry is so painful, why it is important for a prophet to be healed, how to raise a prophetic child, the purpose of prophetic dreams, the art of being an effective marketplace prophet, and more.

Book excerpt: From 1941 to 1943, the Jewish American writer and avant-garde icon Gertrude Stein translated for an American audience thirty-two speeches in which Marshal Philippe Petain, head of state for the collaborationist Vichy government, outlined the Vichy policy barring Jews and other "foreign elements" from the public sphere while calling for France to reconcile with its Nazi occupiers. Why and under what circumstances would Stein undertake such a project? The answers lie in Stein's link to the man at the core of this controversy: Bernard Faÿ, her apparent Vichy protector. Barbara Will outlines the formative powers of this relationship, treating their interaction as a case study of intellectual life during wartime France and an indication of America's place in the Vichy imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church today isn’t the same as it was fifty years ago—or even ten years ago. In spite of the powerful stories of turn-around churches with skyrocketing memberships, the difficult reality is that most congregations are getting smaller. Jeffrey D. Jones asks brave questions for congregations facing this reality—what if membership growth isn’t the primary goal for a church? How can churches remain vital, even with declining attendance? Facing Decline, Finding Hope is an essential resource to help congregations confront their shrinking size while looking towards the hopeful reality that God is calling them to greater faithfulness. The book draws on biblical and theological resources, as well as contemporary leadership studies, to help leaders—both clergy and laity—set aside a survival mentality and ask new questions to shape ministry more attuned to today’s world. Facing Decline, Finding Hope is a powerful book for leaders who want to honestly assess the size of their church and plan for faithful, invigorating service regardless of whether membership numbers are up or down.
