How does it function? Can evangelical Christians use it in their churches today? This updated, comprehensive work answers such questions and points the way to a renewed understanding of the gift of prophecy—an understanding that suggests how the body of Christ may enjoy one of the Holy Spirit's most edifying gifts without compromising the supremacy of Scripture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The charisma of prophecy is found throughout the history of the global Pentecostal movement. Within the movement, prophecy is seen as the communication of an inspired, spontaneous revelation, bringing edification to the faith community. Despite its prevalence, academic research has mostly focused on the biblical-theological aspect, neglecting the actual contemporary practice. This book addresses this gap with a study on the practice of prophecy within the Assemblies of God of Singapore. The book investigates the nature, purpose, and significance of the phenomenon. It also identifies theological variables that are correlated with its practice and explicates these relationships. The investigation employs the empirical-theological method of Johannes van der Ven, utilizing both a qualitative and a quantitative study. The results provide a rich description of the actual reception, delivery, and judging of prophecy. Significant findings include relationships between prophecy and courage, love, personality types, prayer types, and evangelism.

Book excerpt: The study reported in this volume grew out of some theoretical work, one phase of which bore specifically on the behavior of individuals in social movements that made specific (and unfulfilled) prophecies. We had been forced to depend chiefly on historical records to judge the adequacy of our theoretical ideas until we by chance discovered the social movement that we report in this book. At the time we learned of it, the movement was in mid-career but the prophecy about which it was centered had not yet been disconfirmed. We were understandably eager to undertake a study that could test our theoretical ideas under natural conditions. That we were able to do this study was in great measure due to the support obtained through the Laboratory for Research in Social Relations of the University of Minnesota. This study is a project of the Laboratory and was carried out while we were all members of its staff. We should also like to acknowledge the help we received through a grant-in-aid from the Ford Foundation to one of the authors, a grant that made preliminary exploration of the field situation possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first century A.D., miraculous gifts occurred with the baptism with the Holy Spirit. These served as signs that God was no longer using the Israelite nation but that his approval now rested on the Christian church, which had been established by his Son. (Heb 2:2-4) On the day of Pentecost, miraculous gifts followed the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and in each case mentioned in the New Testament where the miraculous gifts of the Spirit were given, at least one of the 12 apostles or Paul was present. (Ac 2:1, 4, 14; 8:9-20; 10:44-46; 19:6) With the death of the apostles, the transmittal of the gifts of the Spirit ended. Did the miraculous gifts of the Spirit cease? Is the gift of prophecy for today? It is imperative that we know the correct answer to that question.

Book excerpt: This book seeks to determine the origins of preaching in Christianity, and to trace its history before Origen. On the basis of a examination of the external evidence for Christian preaching before Origen and of cognate activities in the ancient world which might have influenced Christian practice, and on the basis of a narrative hypothesis on the nature of the development of Christianity, a history is traced by which prophecy gives way to Scripture as the primitive Christian oikos becomes the oikos theou. The homily is seen to emerge from the practice of submitting prophecy to judgement and application, which comes to employ Scripture and in time is employed on Scripture itself. This is the first attempt to answer the questions of how, when and why preaching entered Christian worship.

From believers learning how to flow in the gift of prophecy, to men and women being raised up as ministry gift prophets, there is a reviving of prophetic ministry in the Body of Christ all over the world. The prophetic is not only about hearing and speaking, it is about hearing and doing what God wants done here on earth. God is raising up prophetic believers who not only serve within the local church, but also prophetic believers who are affecting the marketplace through practical ideas and strategies they have received from God. God is raising up prophets like Joseph and Daniel who will represent Him and be His prophetic voice in the high places of the earth today. This training manual is designed to equip believers, stir up the prophetic in them and enable them to develop a strong prophetic ministry in whatever vocation they may be. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is concerned with the influence of biblical and prophetic traditions on the author of the book of Revelation, and in particular his use of the prophecies of Isaiah. First, John's own prophetic consciousness and expression is compared with previous Israelite-Jewish and early Christian prophetic conventions. This is followed by an evaluation of John's use of the OT in general, including a discussion of methodology for isolating allusions, the question of the validity of the terms quotation and allusion in Revelation, and the presence of thematic patterns in the author's choice of Scripture. All this is foundational to the main portion of the work (Ch. III), where a detailed analysis is undertaken to determine the validity of all proposed allusions to Isaiah in the book of Revelation. Of the 72 suggested allusions treated, 40 were judged as certain or virtually certain, 24 were considered as unlikely or doubtful, and 8 were appraised as probable or possible. Those allusions which were accepted received further evaluation to see how and why they were used by John, with special attention given to the tradition-history of the passage used, and the possible interpretative techniques employed. A variety of exegetical and literary devices were uncovered, including the use of catchwords, inclusio, repetition of texts, exploitation of Hebrew parallelism, and the collection of texts around a central theme. Furthermore, John's use of Isaiah is concentrated in basic areas, with clusters of Isaiah texts appearing in specific sections of Revelation. The principal Isaian themes with which he is interested are holy war and the Day of the Lord, oracles against the nations, and salvation prophecies relating to the community of faith and the restored and glorified Jerusalem. It was concluded that on the whole, John's use of Isaiah is not random, and he does not use the OT texts merely as a visionary resource for language, phrases, structural patterns etc. But he consciously carries on the prophecies of his biblical predecessors and invokes their authority. The remnants and results of John's interpretation of Isaiah presuppose exegetical activity and application prior to the vision experience and it is likely that at least some of his intended readers were familiar not only with his theological concerns, but also with his methodological approach.

Book excerpt: Christians in the West', claims David Watson, 'have largely neglected what it means to be a disciple of Christ. The vast majority of western Christians are church-members, pew-fillers, hymn-singers, sermon-tasters, Bible-readers, even born-again believers or Spirit-filled charismatics, but not true disciples of Jesus.' 'The call to discipleship is a call to God's promised glory. This is not a day in which to play religious games. Time is running out fast.'

And how clearly are the nations preparing by granting unrestrained powers to individual men, such as we note in Russia, Germany, Italy, and in our own country,—all preparing for the one man prophesied by our Lord in John 5:43: ‘I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive Me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.’ We are surely in the world-age of the feet of iron mixed with miry clay of Daniel’s image. “Let me repeat that this book, so full of spiritual meat and helpful, illustrative anecdotes, so interesting while so splendidly setting forth these vital, scattered Bible teachings, is destined to reach many hearts and to build up many Christians in a more vital, Spirit-filled faith.” —From the Introduction by Howard A. Kelly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the four centuries of its existence (ca. 165–550), Montanism, an early-Christian prophetic movement, stirred up considerable controversy. Known to its adherents as the ‘New Prophecy,’ its opponents viewed it as a ‘fake prophecy’ with ‘polluted sacraments.’ Accused of introducing novelty and heresy into Christianity. Montanism, in the post-Constantinian era, was also persecuted by Christian emperors. This book identifies all known opponents of Montanism, analyzes and classifies the various charges leveled against Montanism, and describes the methods used to counteract and ultimately destroy the movement. Also described are the ways in which the Montanists reacted to the opposition against them, revealing that the picture painted of the New Prophecy by its opponents was grossly distorted. Fake Prophecy and Polluted Sacraments provides an insightful case-study of the treatment of a minority Christian movement by Church and State both before and after ‘catholic’ Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire.

The first part of Preserving Evangelical Unity: Welcoming Diversity in Non-Essentials will (1) help you to understand why the movement is fraught with divisions over doctrinal differences; (2) guide you through the necessary steps to overcome disunity; (3) attempt to maintain a balance between truth and unity. The second part of the book is formatted in the same style of a "multiple views" book. Here various evangelical scholars from around the globe discuss selected theological issues that have previously led to disunity within the movement, such as predestination and free will, the mode of baptism, and the miraculous gifts of the Spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spiritual Gifts: A Christ-Centered Perspective is just that, centered on Christ. It provides a new perspective on spiritual gifts, seeing the person and work of Christ as the foundation for the gifts of the Spirit. The coming of Jesus into the world opens the way for the whole people of God to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit and to share in God’s work in the world. The book takes a broad New Testament approach to exploring the gifts, carefully examining the meaning of the gifts by considering the Gospels, Acts, and the epistles. The focus is on seeing each gift as an extension of what Jesus did in his ministry. The gifts of the Spirit equip the church to carry on Jesus’ work. Every gift is a means of proclaiming the gospel. God gives his gifts with two purposes in mind: to build the church by bringing people to Christ, and to build up the church by maturing each believer. Consequently, Pentecostals, Charismatics, and conservative Christians alike must embrace spiritual gifts because God desires to transform the world through his equipped people.
