Book Synopsis Properties, Types and Meaning by : G. Chierchia
Download or read book Properties, Types and Meaning written by G. Chierchia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers stems originally from a conference on Property Theory, Type Theory and Semantics held in Amherst on March 13-16 1986. The conference brought together logicians, philosophers, com puter scientists and linguists who had been working on these issues (of ten in isolation from one another). Our intent was to boost debate and exchange of ideas on these fundamental issues at a time of rapid change in semantics and cognitive science. The papers published in this work have evolved substantially since their original presentation at the conference. Given their scope, we thought it convenient to divide the work into two volumes. The first deals primarily with logical and philosophical foundations, the second with more empirical semantic issues. While there is a common set of issues tying the two volumes together, they are both self-contained and can be read independently of one another. Two of the papers in the present collection (van Benthem in volume 1 and Chierchia in volume II) were not actually read at the conference. They are nevertheless included here for their direct relevance to the topics of the volumes. Regrettably, some of the papers that were presented (Feferman, Klein, and Plotkin) could not be included in the present work due to timing problems. We nevertheless thank the authors for their contribu tion in terms of ideas and participation in the debate.

Book Synopsis Properties, Types and Meaning: Semantic issues. Type-shifting rules and the semantics of interrogatives by : Gennaro Chierchia
Download or read book Properties, Types and Meaning: Semantic issues. Type-shifting rules and the semantics of interrogatives written by Gennaro Chierchia and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection focuses on two interrelated problems which are central to the analysis of meaning: intentionality and the nature of semantic categories. Most of the problems that semantics currently faces call for a characterization of information bearing structures richer than one cast in terms of possible worlds, and for a system of semantic categories more dynamic and flexible than the one stemming from standard type-theory. -- Back cover.

The book also records comments to the papers and the authors' replies to the comments. In this way, the contributions themselves are contextually dependent. It represents an inquiry into the activities on the semantics side of the pragmatics boundary.

Book Synopsis Beyond Expressives: Explorations in Use-Conditional Meaning by : Daniel Gutzmann
Download or read book Beyond Expressives: Explorations in Use-Conditional Meaning written by Daniel Gutzmann and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Expressives: Explorations in Use-Conditional Meaning offers empirical and theoretical studies of expressions whose meaning falls outside the standard realm of truth-conditional semantics. Aspects of meaning that are better captured by their use-conditions instead came into the spotlight of formal semantics recently, mainly due to the raised interest in expressions like interjections or swear words. Going beyond such expressives, the contributions provide detailed semantic analyses of a broad range of use-conditional items, including particles, non-inflectional constructions, personal datives and interpretational effects of focus. This volume thereby proves that the empirical domain of use-conditional meaning is as diverse as the truth-conditional one, equally amenable to systematic semantic treatments. This book is an exciting, eye-opening collection of novel and challenging data from English, German and Japanese. For anyone who needs persuading that there is more to language expressivity than informational content, this book is a must. For those who need no persuading, this book will be no less a treat. It offers to all not merely sets of entrancing new observations, but also analyses which feed one’s imagination as to how best to extend current methodologies to make these data tractable for formal modelling.
