Book excerpt: Concrete being a versatile construction material is not only the most utilized construction material globally, but also the second largest material used world over. Preparation of concrete exploits substantial quantities of natural resources. Thus to promote sustainability, agro industrial by-products have immense potential to prevent the excessive use of these natural resources to the point of depletion which can have detrimental effects. Moreover, with the increasing quantities of waste materials and industrial by-products, solid waste management is the prime concern in the world. Due to scarcity of land-filling space and its ever increasing cost, recycling and utilization of industrial by-products and waste materials has become an attractive proposition to disposal. Thus, such by-products can be used in construction, building materials and in other fields for reduction of environmental problems.Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a flowing concrete mixture that is able to consolidate under its own weight without undergoing any significant segregation. Extensive research has been carried out on the utility of agro industrial by-products in developing quality grade of SCC. The literature of different aspect of fly ash is quiet voluminous. This work investigates the workability and Strength characteristics of Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) prepared by partially replacing cement (ordinary Portland cement) with fly ash at different replacement levels (10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30%). The Guidelines of European Federation of National Associations Representing for Concrete (EFNARC) was followed for mix designing purpose. The experiments were carried out by adopting a water- powder ratio of 0.43. Workability of the fresh concrete is determined by using tests such as: slump flow, T50cm Slump, V-funnel, and L-Box. The strength properties such as compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength were tested at the age of 7 and 28days.Test results concluded that there is some increase in compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength after replacing the cement with certain percentage of fly ash. Hence, fly ash can be safely used in concrete for durability and strength purposes.

The widespread use of this material has led to continuous developments such as ultra-high strength concrete and self-compacting concrete. Recycled Aggregate in Concrete: Use of Industrial, Construction and Demolition Waste focuses on the recent development which the use of various types of recycled waste materials as aggregate in the production of various types of concrete. By drawing together information and data from various fields and sources, Recycled Aggregate in Concrete: Use of Industrial, Construction and Demolition Waste provides full coverage of this subject. Divided into two parts, a compilation of varied literature data related to the use of various types of industrial waste as aggregates in concrete is followed by a discussion of the use of construction and demolition waste as aggregate in concrete. The properties of the aggregates and their effect on various concrete properties are presented, and the quantitative procedure to estimate the properties of concrete containing construction and demolition waste as aggregates is explained. Current codes and practices developed in various countries to use construction and demolition waste as aggregates in concrete and issues related to the sustainability of cement and concrete production are also discussed. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to “High-Performance Eco-Efficient Concrete” and concrete fatigue behavior, more sustainable construction materials, capable of complying with quality standards and current innovation policies, aimed at saving natural resources and reducing global pollution. The development of self-compacting concretes with electric arc furnace slags is a further achievement. In addition, the technical and economic viability of using coarse recycled aggregates from crushed concrete in shotcrete, enhanced quality and reduced on-site construction time are the basic features of prefabricated bridge elements and systems, biomass bottom ash as aluminosilicate precursor and phosphogypsum were discussed. On the other hand, basalt fiber improving the mechanical properties and durability of reactive powder concrete, alkali-activated slag and high-volume fly ash and the potential of phosphogypsum as secondary raw material in construction industry, the effects of fly ash on the diffusion, bonding, and microproperties of chloride penetration in concrete were studied. Increasing amounts of sustainable concretes are being used as society becomes more aware of the environment. Finally, the circular economy as an economic model of production and consumption that involves reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling materials after their service life are presented in this book.
