Book excerpt: The velocity of sound in mixtures of water and steam has been computed from the slope of the lines of equal entropy over a wide range of ambient conditions up to the critical point. The sound velocity is lower in the mixture than in either constituent It changes discontinuously on transition to the single phase in wet steam with just a trace of liquid The velocity is about 10 per cent less than in dry steam. The velocity decreases monotonically with increasing water content. In boiling water the velocity is very low. The smallest value occurs at reduced pressure at the triple point (with no solid ice present); the velocity here is as low as 0.012 m/s Rankine-Hugoniot curves were calculated for the mixture. These show that a shock-like compression in very wet steam or boiling water will condense all the steam giving rise to a large change in volume with very little rise in pressure. The Hugoniot curve lies very close to a line of constant entropy in this case. For high quality steam the compression will raise the temperature of the vapor and evaporate the liquid phase. This occurs far from constant entropy conditions, indicating a strong loss mechanism. In boiling water the propagation was studied with pressure waves having an amplitude exceeding the minimum necessary to condense all the steam. The velocity decreases monotonically with decreasing driving pressure, approaching the small amplitude acoustic velocity when the driving pressure approaches the minimum necessary to condense all the steam. In a straight pipe of boiling water true shocks were not propagated. The rise time of the compression wave steadily increases as it passes through the medium. On finally reaching a region of no bubbles, high peak pressures are observed. These peaks were an order of magnitude greater than the original driving pressure. This amplitude is apparently due to the formation of a water hammer.

Book Synopsis Wave Propagation in Gas-Liquid Media by : V. E. Nakoryakov
Download or read book Wave Propagation in Gas-Liquid Media written by V. E. Nakoryakov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-06-28 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave Propagation in Gas-Liquid Media (translated from the Russian 2nd Edition, published in 1990) presents the fundamentals of wave dynamics of two-phase gas-liquid systems. The study of multiphase systems is of growing importance in mechanics and thermophysics, particularly for applications in industrial, energy, power, chemical, and aerospace engineering. This book presents investigations of non-linear wave dynamics, as well as practical applications of wave motion. A system of non-stationary gas-dynamics to replace studies of conventional gas-dynamics is constructed by the book's contributors. Topics discussed include acoustics and shock waves in homogenous gas- and vapor-liquid mixtures, dynamics of gas and vapor bubbles, wave processes in gas-liquid systems, wave propagation in a liquid with vapor bubbles, wave processes on the interface of two media, wave flow of liquid films, and basic calculation formulas for wave dynamics of gas- and vapor-liquid media. The book will be a useful reference for thermophysicists, mechanical engineers, and aerospace engineers.

Book Synopsis Computer Modeling of Free-Surface and Pressurized Flows by : M. Hanif Chaudhry
Download or read book Computer Modeling of Free-Surface and Pressurized Flows written by M. Hanif Chaudhry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers are widely used for the analysis, design, and operation of water resource projects. This gives accurate results, allowing the analysis of complex systems which may not have been possible otherwise, and the investigation and comparison of several different alternatives in a short time, thereby reducing the project costs, optimizing design, and efficient utilization of resources. This volume compiles an edited version of the lecture notes specially prepared by 14 well-known European and North American researchers. Part I deals with free-surface flows. Governing equations are derived and their solution by the finite-difference, finite-element, and boundary-integral methods are discussed. Then, turbulence models, three-dimensional models, dam-break flow models, sediment transport models, and flood routing models are presented. Part II is related to the modeling of steady and transient pressurized flows. Governing equations for both single and two-component flows are derived and numerical methods for their solution are presented. The modeling of water quality in pipe networks, of cooling water systems, and slow and rapid transients is then discussed.

Book Synopsis Optimizing the Shape of Mechanical Elements and Structures by : Shirley Seireg
Download or read book Optimizing the Shape of Mechanical Elements and Structures written by Shirley Seireg and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-01-02 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work introduces a wide variety of practical approaches to the synthesis and optimization of shapes for mechanical elements and structures. The simplest methods for achieving the best results without mathematical complexity - especially computer solutions - are emphasized. The authors present detailed case studies of structures subjected to different types of static and dynamic loading, including load-bearing structures with arbitrary support conditions, rotating disks, layered structures, pressure vessels, elastic bodies and structural elements subjected to impulsive loading.
