Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric wave data from a multisensor array have been analyzed. It was found that Saturn Apollo launches generate acoustic gravity waves which propagate in the upper atmosphere and induce phase-path fluctuations. The dispersion study of a TID event has been used to illustrate the possibility of deriving neutral atmospheric structure from such type studies. The use of a parametric model to describe the power spectra of the phase-path fluctuations was investigated. (Author).

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to obtain a panoramic view of acoustic-gravity-wave motions throughout the atmosphere. A one-dimensional array of particles and springs, conceived by Newton to study sound waves in the atmosphere, was extended to two dimensions by means of 1500 particles interconnected by springs. Variations of density and pressure with altitude are represented by variations in mass and spring constants. This new model has provided means by which acoustic-gravity-wave motions in the atmosphere are solved on a high-speed digital computer, and a new animated-computer-output technique is used. A motion picture--automatically plotted by the computer, a frame at a time--provides greater detail and perspective of mechanical wave motions in the atmosphere than has ever been obtainable before. Ground-level and 100-km-high explosions were investigated with this computer model, and the resulting transient motions of the atmosphere were displayed by means of a motion picture produced by digital techniques. Computed ground-level barograms resulting from a ground-level explosion compare well with experimental barograms recorded during ground-level nuclear explosions. (Author).

Book excerpt: Atmospheric gravity waves play fundamental roles in a broad-range of dynamical processes extending throughout the Earth0́9s neutral atmosphere and ionosphere. In this paper, we present a modified form for the acoustic-gravity wave equation and its dispersion relationships for a compressible and non-stationary atmosphere in hydrostatic balance. Importantly, the solutions have been achieved without the use of the well-known Boussinesq approximation which have been used extensively in previous studies. We utilize the complete set of governing equations for a compressible atmosphere with non-uniform airflows to determine an equation for vertical velocity of possible atmospheric waves. This intricate wave equation is simplified by a proper substitution producing a useful new wave-like equation for acoustic-gravity waves. The substitution introduces a term omega (intrinsic frequency) in the amplitude of the wave solution for the vertical velocity of acoustic-gravity waves. This term may play a significant role in directional filtering of atmospheric waves in realistic atmospheres exhibiting strong and highly variable winds. It is also proven that the only difference in the wave equation of compressible fluid when non-uniform wind is added to the equations of motion is the term with second derivative of Ln(omega) with respect to height. These new solutions may be particularly important for improved gravity wave propagation studies in the upper mesosphere and thermosphere/ionosphere regions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive textbook in which the author describes the science of waves in liquids and gases. Drawing on a subject of enormous extent and variety, he provides his readers with a thorough analysis of the most important and representative types of waves including sound waves, shock waves, waterwaves of all kinds, and the so-called internal waves (inside atmospheres and oceans) due to intensity stratification. Emphasis throughout is on the most generally useful fundamental ideas of wave science, including the principles of how waves interact with flows. This standard work on one of the great subdivisions of the dynamics of fluids is lucidly written and will be invaluable to engineers, physicists, geophysicists, applied mathematicians or any research worker concerned with wave motions or fluid fllows. It is especially suitable as a textbook for courses at the final year undergraduate or graduate level.

Book excerpt: This book presents the theory and results of experimental studies of the propagation of infrasound waves in a real atmosphere with its inherent fine-scale layered structure of wind speed and temperature. It is motivated by the fact that the statistical characteristics of anisotropic (or layered) fluctuations of meteorological fields, the horizontal scales of which significantly exceed their vertical scales, have been very poorly studied compared to those of locally isotropic turbulence in the inertial range of scales. This book addresses this lacuna by developing a theory of the formation of anisotropic inhomogeneities of the atmosphere in a random field of internal gravity waves and vortex structures. Using theory, it explains numerous experimental data depicting the influence of the fine structure of the atmosphere on the propagation of infrasound waves from pulsed sources. The text will appeal to specialists in the fields of acoustics and optics of the atmosphere, remote sensing of the atmosphere, the dynamics of internal waves, nonlinear acoustics, and infrasound monitoring of explosions and natural hazards.
