Book excerpt: The planning for the IUTAM Symposium on Adiabatic Waves in Liquid-Vapor Systems began in May of 1986 in G5ttingen. The Symposium was held in August of 1989 in the Max-Planck-Institut fUr Str5mungsforschung. The invitations to participants suggested that the written papers concern Fast Adiabatic Phase Changes in Fluids and Related Phenomena. Particular topics suggested were: Liquefaction shockwaves and Shock splitting; Evaporation waves; Condensation in Laval nozzles and turbines; Stability in multiphase shocks; Non-equilibrium and near-critical phenomena; Nucleation in dynamic systems; Structure of transition layers; Acoustic phenomena in two phase systems and Cavitation waves. All of these topics should have been treated with emphasis on physical results, new phenomena and theoretical models. Participants from fourteen nations took part in the Symposium and presented papers which were within the range of suggested topics. The organization and execution of the Symposium was performed by the Max-Planck-Institut fUr Str5mungsforschung in G5ttingen. In particular, the meeting has been promoted under the leadership of Professor Dr. E.-A. MUller, who has for many years given his support for international exchanges in science. The detailed work of organization up to and during the Symposium was in large part due to Dr. T. Kowalewski, who served as Symposium Secretary.

Variational methods give an efficient and elegant way to formulate and solve mathematical problems that are of interest to scientists and engineers. In this book three fundamental aspects of the variational formulation of mechanics will be presented: physical, mathematical and applicative ones. The first aspect concerns the investigation of the nature of real physical problems with the aim of finding the best variational formulation suitable to those problems. The second aspect is the study of the well-posedeness of those mathematical problems which need to be solved in order to draw previsions from the formulated models. And the third aspect is related to the direct application of variational analysis to solve real engineering problems.

Book Synopsis Finite Volumes for Complex Applications IX - Methods, Theoretical Aspects, Examples by : Robert Klöfkorn
Download or read book Finite Volumes for Complex Applications IX - Methods, Theoretical Aspects, Examples written by Robert Klöfkorn and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings of the 9th conference on "Finite Volumes for Complex Applications" (Bergen, June 2020) are structured in two volumes. The first volume collects the focused invited papers, as well as the reviewed contributions from internationally leading researchers in the field of analysis of finite volume and related methods. Topics covered include convergence and stability analysis, as well as investigations of these methods from the point of view of compatibility with physical principles. Altogether, a rather comprehensive overview is given on the state of the art in the field. The properties of the methods considered in the conference give them distinguished advantages for a number of applications. These include fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, structural analysis, nuclear physics, semiconductor theory, carbon capture utilization and storage, geothermal energy and further topics. The second volume covers reviewed contributions reporting successful applications of finite volume and related methods in these fields. The finite volume method in its various forms is a space discretization technique for partial differential equations based on the fundamental physical principle of conservation. Many finite volume methods preserve further qualitative or asymptotic properties, including maximum principles, dissipativity, monotone decay of free energy, and asymptotic stability, making the finite volume methods compatible discretization methods, which preserve qualitative properties of continuous problems at the discrete level. This structural approach to the discretization of partial differential equations becomes particularly important for multiphysics and multiscale applications. The book is a valuable resource for researchers, PhD and master’s level students in numerical analysis, scientific computing and related fields such as partial differential equations, as well as engineers working in numerical modeling and simulations.

Book Synopsis Post-Dryout Heat Transfer by : G.F. Hewitt
Download or read book Post-Dryout Heat Transfer written by G.F. Hewitt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of post-dryout heat transfer has generated great interest because of its importance in determining maximum clad temperature in nuclear reactor loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCAs). An associated phenomenon, the deterioration of heat transfer in boiling, is significant to other industrial sectors. This book provides comprehensive coverage of post-dryout heat transfer, discussing such essential topics as post-dryout heat transfer in dispersed flow, interpretation and use of transient data in surface rewetting by reinstatement of flow or by reducing heat flux, rod bundles, two-phase flow occurrences in the post-dryout region, various methods for predicting ""inverted annular flow,"" and new experiments for measuring thermodynamic nonequilibrium with probes in the channel. The book also presents a basis for independent safety assessment of nuclear reactors and chemical plant systems where post-dryout heat transfer may occur. Post-Dryout Heat Transfer will be a useful reference for researchers and professionals in the nuclear and chemical production industries.

Book Synopsis Annular Two-Phase Flow by : Geoffrey Hewitt
Download or read book Annular Two-Phase Flow written by Geoffrey Hewitt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annular Two-Phase Flow presents the wide range of industrial applications of annular two-phase flow regimes. This book discusses the fluid dynamics and heat transfer aspects of the flow pattern. Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the classification of the various types of interface distribution observed in practice. This text then examines the various regimes of two-phase flow with emphasis on the regions of occurrence of the annular flow regime. Other chapters consider the single momentum and energy balances, which illustrate the differences and analogies between single- and two-phase flows. This book discusses as well the simple modes for annular flow with consideration to the calculation of the profile of shear stress in the liquid film. The final chapter deals with the techniques that are developed for the measurement of flow pattern, entrainment, and film thickness. This book is a valuable resource for chemical engineers.
