This book was released on 1998 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spontaneous fission provides a very natural production mechanism for neutron-rich nuclei. The large excesses of neutrons over protons in heavy systems near the valley of stability, coupled with the tendency for the charge-to-mass ratio to be preserved in the fission process, results in fission fragments that lie well to the neutron-rich side of stability. The excitation energy of the primary fragments produced at scission results in the evaporation of neutrons (Fig 1) to produce secondary fragments whose excitation energy is dissipated through [gamma]-ray emission. In the last few years the study of such [gamma] rays has produced a dramatic increase in the available information on the structure of neutron-rich nuclei. This renaissance in fission-fragment spectroscopy has been due primarily to the much increased resolving power of large arrays of germanium [gamma]-ray detectors such as Euroball and Gammasphere. Through the improved detection efficiency and high granularity, these arrays have made it possible to obtain reasonable rates for the detection of three coincident [gamma] rays out of the cascades of multiplicity ten that are typically produced in spontaneous fission. In addition to the determination of the energies of excited levels, developments in spectroscopic techniques have allowed for information to be deduced regarding the spins and parities [1,2] and lifetimes [3,4] of such states of extreme isospin. In this paper we present research that has been carried out using the Euroball and Eurogam arrays to detect [gamma] rays emitted from spontaneously fissioning 248Cm and 252Cf. The paper focuses on three sub-areas of current activity, namely, the measurement of yields of secondary fragment pairs, the measurement of state lifetimes at around spin 10, and recent measurements of g-factors of excited states in fission fragments.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis by : G. Molnar
Download or read book Handbook of Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis written by G. Molnar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-02-23 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) is a unique, non-destructive nuclear analytical method with multi-element capabilities. It is most effective if intense neutron beams (especially cold beams) of nuclear reactors are used to induce the prompt gamma radiation. Based largely on the authors' pioneering research in cold neutron PGAA, the handbook describes the methodology in self-contained manner and reviews recent applications. The library of prompt gamma ray data and spectra for all natural elements is a unique aid to the practitioner. The level is understandable by a broad audience, which facilitates teaching and training. The Handbook of Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis is a comprehensive handbook written for those practising the method, wanting to implement it at a reactor facility, or just looking for a powerful non-destructive method of element analysis. The book is also useful for nuclear physics, chemistry and engineering scientists, scholars and graduate students interested in neutron-induced gamma ray spectroscopy and nuclear analytical methods.

Book Synopsis Prompt Fission Gamma-ray Studies at DANCE. by :
Download or read book Prompt Fission Gamma-ray Studies at DANCE. written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of correlated data on prompt-fission [gamma]-rays (PFG) have been carried out for various actinide isotopes in recent years using the Detector for Advanced Neutron Capture Experiments (DANCE) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). We have developed a model that conveniently parametrizes the correlated data of [gamma]-ray multiplicity and energy. New results on two- dimensional prompt-fission [gamma]-ray multiplicity versus energy distributions from spontaneous fission on 252Cf and neutron-induced fission on 242mAm are presented together with previously obtained results on 233,235U and 239Pu. Correlated PFG data from 252Cf are also compared to results of the detailed theoretical model developed at LANL, for different thresholds of PFG energies. Future plans to measure correlated data on fission fragments, prompt fission neutrons and [gamma]-rays at DANCE are presented.

Book excerpt: NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.
Book Synopsis Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes by : International Atomic Energy Agency
Download or read book Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA Radiation Technology Repo. This book was released on 2012 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication addresses recent developments in neutron generator (NG) technology. It presents information on compact instruments with high neutron yield to be used for neutron activation analysis (NAA) and prompt gamma neutron activation analysis in combination with high count rate spectrometers. Traditional NGs have been shown to be effective for applications including borehole logging, homeland security, nuclear medicine and the on-line analysis of aluminium, coal and cement. Pulsed fast thermal neutron analysis, as well as tagged and timed neutron analysis, are additional techniques which can be applied using NG. Furthermore, NG can effectively be used for elemental analysis and is also effective for analysis of hidden materials by neutron radiography. Useful guidelines for developing NG based research laboratories are also provided in this publication.
