Book Synopsis The China Circle by : Barry Naughton
Download or read book The China Circle written by Barry Naughton and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the British relinquish control of Hong Kong, the economic relationship among the People's Republic of China (PRC), Taiwan, and Hong Kong becomes especially significant. Despite political and diplomatic tensions, this relationship has grown phenomenally in recent years and continues to prosper. Known as the "China Circle," it is an important emerging economic region that cuts across political boundaries. This book is the first comprehensive study of the underlying economic dynamics that make the China Circle not only possible, but hugely successful. Yun-wing Sung, Barry Naughton, and Kong Yam Tan analyze the macroeconomic issues in each of the political entities that make up the China Circle. Michael Borrus, Chin Chung, Jean François Huchet, and Dieter Ernst focus one of the region's leading industries, electronics. With rapid changes in technology, firm strategy, and global markets driving its continuous restructuring, the electronics industry offers a detailed view of the factors that are shaping the region as a whole. To provide a complete economic picture of the China Circle today—and possible future developments—the contributors explore key issues including emerging divisions of labor, developing trade and investment patterns, and the effect of Hong Kong's return to China in July 1997. Written in an open and accessible style, the book is especially timely and more in-depth than anything currently available.

Download or read book Creating a Healthy Fiscal Climate written by Canada. Department of Finance and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document addresses the importance of creating a healthy fiscal climate as a precondition for durable growth and fob creation. The requirement for prudence in the planning assumptions used to derive the deficit forecast is discussed. The document presents updated economic assumptions for the period 1994 to 1996. It also presents the fiscal outlook under updated economic scenarios. It addresses the question of how to get back on track. To what extent should program spending reductions be relied on? Is there scope for new revenue-raising measures? The document sets out certain questions that are submitted to the standing committee on finance of the House of Commons as part of the budget consultation process. To provide the basic background information needed to address these questions, and to assess the tough trade-offs, detailed descriptions of government spending and revenues are provided in the annexes.
Book Synopsis Peace, Security and Post-conflict Reconstruction in the Great Lakes Region of Africa by : Tukumbi Lumumba-Kasongo
Download or read book Peace, Security and Post-conflict Reconstruction in the Great Lakes Region of Africa written by Tukumbi Lumumba-Kasongo and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes region of Africa is characterized by protest politics, partial democratization, political illegitimacy and unstable economic growth. Many of the countries that are members of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) which are: Burundi, Angola, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Zambia, have experienced political violence and bloodshed at one time or another. While a few states have been advancing electoral democracy, environmental protection and peaceful state building, the overall intensity of violence in the region has led to civil wars, invasion, genocide, dictatorships, political instability, and underdevelopment. Efforts to establish sustainable peace, meaningful socio-economic development and participatory democracy have not been quite successful. Using various methodologies and paradigms, this book interrogates the complexity of the causes of these conflicts; and examines their impact and implications for socio-economic development of the region. The non-consensual actions related to these conflicts and imperatives of power struggles supported by the agents of savage capitalism have paralysed efforts toward progress. The book therefore recommends new policy frameworks within regionalist lenses and neo-realist politics to bring about sustainable peace in the region.
