Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albania is not well known by outsiders; it was deliberately closed to the outside world during the communist era. Now it has thankfully become free again, its borders are open and it can be visited, and it is increasingly integrating with the rest of Europe and beyond. Unfortunately, Albania has had its share of problems in the post-communist era; it's a land of destitution and despair, thanks in part to the Albanian mafia, which has turned the country into one of blood-feuds, kalashnikovs, and eternal crises. Yet, Albania is, in essence, a European nation like any other ...

Download or read book Promoting Farmer Entrepreneurship Through Producer Organizations in Central and Eastern Europe written by John Millns and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 1 May 1 2004, after a 14-year transitional period from central planning to market economics, eight Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries (the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia) became members of the European Union (EU). Bulgaria and Romania are preparing for accession and are expected to join in 2007. Croatia submitted its application for membership in 2002 and Macedonia in 2004. Part One of this paper presents an overall analysis of the situation and development of producer groups and farmer cooperatives across the CEE countries, including the new EU members, the applicant countries and Balkan states alike. Part Two provides a case study of FAO's experiences and lessons learned with technical assistance programmes and projects in the subregion. The example presents a number of practical suggestions as to how development organisations, governments, donors and advisers might be best able to facilitate the formulation and implementation of policies and strategies that promote the further development of more autonomous and financially sustainable producers' organisations and cooperatives in CEE countries.

Download or read book Smallholders and family farms in Albania - Country study report 2019 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The background for conducting country studies on the challenges, needs and constraints of smallholders and family farms in seven countries has been a wish to further strengthen the Regional Initiative and develop the initiative towards a stronger programmatic approach at both the regional and country levels. To provide support to smallholders and family farms, there has been a need to develop a better understanding and knowledge platform of the main challenges, needs and constraints of smallholders and family farms in the specific country context. Even though many of the challenges are the same throughout the region, there are still significant variations among the countries; it is important to recognize and understand these variations when designing support to smallholders and family farms in each specific country. It has been the objectives of the country studies first to analyze the development trend and current state of smallholders and family farms in the specific country, second to study the current political priorities and policies affecting smallholders and family farms, and finally, based on the conclusions made, to provide recommendations, mainly at the policy level, on how to further support the development of commercial family farms and at the same time ensure in general inclusive growth, improved rural livelihood for women and men and the reduction of rural poverty for all. It is hoped that each country study will not only be relevant for FAO but also for governments, donors and other international organizations when formulating policy and preparing programmes.

[Author] [Author]. This book was released on 2024-05-02 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report builds upon FAO’s work promoting gender mainstreaming in extension and advisory services, cataloguing challenges and suggesting strategies for increasing the gender responsiveness of rural advisory services globally. [Author] The purpose of this review is to apply FAO’s accumulated knowledge about gender equality in the context of rural advisory services to assess the situation in the Europe and Central Asia region. [Author] The report provides a snapshot of the extent to which gender considerations are currently integrated into rural advisory services in the region and highlights good practices that are in line with FAO’s gender equality strategies. [Author] The report concludes with recommendations for FAO, partner organizations and stakeholders in the fields of agricultural extension and rural advisory services, on how to further improve such services to extend their reach to rural women and men who have previously had limited or no access. [Author] This process requires moving away from gender‑neutral service provision, which often results in the exclusion of women, towards transformative extension and rural advisory services that challenge unequal gender relations and address underlying discriminatory norms and practices. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This working paper is the update of an earlier cross-country study on household income sources using an expanded harmonized dataset. The analysis presented covers a total of 93 surveys representing 41 countries – nearly double that of the previous study – to depict rural and urban households’ livelihood strategies across different levels of economic development. The findings shed light on the relationship between household livelihood activity portfolios and per capita gross domestic product, confirming a picture of multiple livelihood activities across the rural and urban space, at different levels of development. However, we find an emerging divergence between countries from sub-Saharan Africa and those from the rest of the world regarding employment and income generation.

Book Synopsis Analysis of agriculture and rural development policy in Albania by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Analysis of agriculture and rural development policy in Albania written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-05-18 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albania is on the road to accession to the European Union. In this pre-accession period, the role of agricultural and rural development policy is crucial in order to prepare a viable farming sector that can withstand competitive pressures in the single market after joining the European Union. The economic and financial opportunities that the European Union provides through accessing the single market and the instruments of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) are additional strong incentives to prepare the agricultural sector for European Union integration. In order to maximize the benefits of the single market and of CAP measures, Albania needs to adjust agriculture support policies and align them to the CAP. In recent years, Albania has been making efforts to reform its agricultural and rural development policy and align it with the European Union CAP. The vision of the agricultural policy is based on the priorities of the Inter-sectorial Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development (ISARD) 2014–2020, the National Strategy for Development and Integration (NSDI-II) 2015–2020, the National Programme for European Integration (NPEI) 2019–2021, GoA Program 2017–2020, as well as the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) priorities.
